Yes, yes, we should all be grateful for people making the effort to buy us things etc etc (just to pre-empt the usual thread kill joys.) However. I am 48. I dress kind of ageing rock chick, chunky biker boots, leather jacket, wafty dress sort of thing. Just what I do. My sister is more Next and Boden which is fine, doesn't bother me what she wears. She has bought me this: fluffy rabbit jumper Is it a passive aggressive comment on my dress sense? Has she forgotten Im 48? My partner thinks its hilarious! (Disclaimer: I have not had too much prosecco and I am not sat here wearing it!😂)

If I told you what my “awful” present was you’d all tell me it’s not awful. It’s not really. But I’m trying really hard to declutter and my friends has given me several large presents for my birthday/Christmas that are not massively to my taste, not useful and are physically big. Im actually really tempted to put them all in the charity shop bag but there’s no way she won’t notice that at least one or two of them are out when she comes to my house. Bloody scented candles can go straight to the charity shop (they’re nice ones but I never get around to lighting them and there is only one diptique scented candle I like - I buy one about every 4 years!). The other items are basically very large random bowls for fruit/display? They’re really large. I don’t have anywhere for them. She also gives my children enormous games that they won’t play - they’re quite novelty and the sort of game you play once and then shove in a cupboard. I hate the waste so I’ve put them straight into the charity pile before they’re opened.

I know I’m ungrateful. I really do. And I really am. But there are so many things I would have loved and a £5 book token would have been brilliant! (The presents she’s given me are not at all cheap.)

I find it hard to know that I should feel grateful but I’m actually not. I’m grateful that she wants to buy me presents. But I would so much rather not have presents than have things I won’t use and don’t have space for.

It actually makes me quite sad to think of her buying things she thinks I’ll like and the reality of my opening her gifts with zero excitement and the charity shop nearby.

I think it’s ok to ask friends vaguely what they might like. Even vaguely. I’d love a book token or some bubble bath. I’d so much rather someone only spent £5 on me and got something I’ll use/love.

I actually love that!

But then I'm a fan of pink. Collect rabbits and love comfort over style.

I can see why it doesn't match your clothing tastes though.

PicaNewName · 25/12/2022 18:51

My mother (she's got MH problems and is very shortsighted) got my husband some embroidery scissors one year. 🤣

yoshiblue · 25/12/2022 18:57

MIL bought me animal print slippers. She's obsessed with anything animal print and not my style. I've never worn any of the animal print items bought over the years!

Bought her son gentleman's anchovy paste as one of his gifts, so he's done worse!

Otherwise I have lovely presents, so it's been a good year!

FlowerArranger · 25/12/2022 18:58

@NCy - can you remove the ears and go crazy with some black acrylic paint design?

A Nightmare Before Christmas remote control holder.

I do like NBC, however, I never watch television.

They know this. Most of their conversation revolves around ‘did I see the program on last night’ and I tell them each time that I don’t watch television.

I would love this, swap? I have to offer a second hand copy of Elephants on Acid and other bizarre experiments by Alex Boese - gifted by my sister who knows I only use my kindle as I cannot hold a large book now (in fact even a small one is hard on the arthritic wrists and fingers!

MoonahSton · 25/12/2022 19:05

I got a vegan hamper from my in laws. Everything bar one thing has nuts in.

I'm not a vegan but I am allergic to nuts.

Ackity · 25/12/2022 19:11

OP I love that!

I'd be v careful, I think they might be trying to off you!

Nothing horrific here, we all pretty much ask what each other would like and stick to that with the odd small surprise here and there.

Aliceinunderland · 25/12/2022 19:18

My DP gave me an air fryer recipe book this Christmas. We live together and have done for 2 years. You'd think he would know we don't have an air fryer. I've spent all evening thinking he's hidden one as a surprise present but nothing yet. He's the cook in the house 🙄

Witchbitch20 · 25/12/2022 19:35

My mother in law gifted me a Clinique freebie and wrapped in a recycled bag from the gifts I gave her last year.

For my birthday she regifted me the candle I’d given her last Christmas.

Witchbitch20 · 25/12/2022 19:37

I’ve also received a number of “bee” themed gifts. I have a sever bee allergy, and carry an epi pen for these little stinging suckers.

Ouch. That's not even funny.

DH got me some boots I already have, his logic being that he knows I like them 🙄

🤣🤣

Witchbitch20 · 25/12/2022 19:48

@fancyacuppatea I’m swinging between needing to get a sense of humour and that it’s actually quite insensitive.

Who knows. Just sitting here now waiting for 8pm so I can go and watch tv in bed. It’s been quite a day.

JimBell · 25/12/2022 18:42

This year from my parents I received a bath bomb and a candle from b&m. DH received a box of golf balls with the £12 price tag still on. Usually they are really generous to us, we made loads of effort for them and put together a lovely food & wine hamper with all their favourites. My brother and his gf got £500 cash in their card. Not sure what we’ve done to offend them this year but it was almost embarrassing opening that whilst my brother opened his

God I'd ask them! That's cruel.

mrsbyers · 25/12/2022 19:51

Earlier I told my husband next year I’m not making a list , reading these has changed mh
mind

JosephFrancis · 25/12/2022 20:08

My DH apparently thought we weren't getting each other anything. We did discuss not getting each other anything but in the end we mutually decided we would buy for one another. He clearly decided to dump this information out of his brain. He really thought he was winning by buying me a cheap wall calendar and a couple of chocolate bars. The calendar features characters from a tV show I haven't watched in years and only sort of liked. The chocolate bars are quality street ones that I hate.

He on the other hand got a red letter day, a voucher for a professional massage, designer joggers, fragrance, his favourite drink and sweets......

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 25/12/2022 20:39

That must feel shit, he'd better redeem himself in the sales!

berrycakeandcustard · 25/12/2022 20:59

😱some of the gifts listed here, second hand trainers, a kitchen roll holder!
I hope you all received some other gifts that you really wanted to make up for the strange gifts!

The fluffy rabbit jumper is kind of cute OP for lounging around at home.

Hope everyone here has had a lovely Christmas day, strange gifts aside!

HappyAsAMudlark · 25/12/2022 21:02

@ODPintheNHS I think it means he will be happily doing all the hoovering from now on. Excellent gift. Sit back and lift feet up as Henry and Husband roll around.

rosesinmygarden · 25/12/2022 21:02

My 18 year old was given a Pamper set. Lovely! However, it's a Disney princess one 😂

Just a bit random...

HerRoyalNotness · 25/12/2022 21:17

My 5yo would love that 😂

my H tried to buy me a laptop stand and/or a heated mug thing for work. I don’t drink hot drinks really and I work from home right nExt to the kitchen. So I got a Starbucks card, a small travel wallet (from son I asked for) and a mom necklace from the school Christmas shop from my youngest. H could think of nothing else to get me

PleaseTakeItOff · 25/12/2022 21:21

My exh got me a voucher for bungee jumping in a card that said “someone wants you to jump off a cliff”. Which I actually quite like.

TinselOnRoses · 25/12/2022 21:26

I received an electric back scrubber, without the scrubber part from my MIL. She said that she will try to find the other piece one day 👍☹️🎄😬
