SIL invited us over for Christmas but changed the plan

SIL invited us over for Christmas.

She initially said she had a surprise for us, so I'm unsure whether it is actually a change of plan or if it was the surprise all along.

She just told us that instead of hosting the Christmas Dinner at hers and bil's, we would go out to Karen's dinner to have dinner there (it is apparently open tomorrow afternoon!)

She also asked us not to explain the concept of Karen's diner to my parents and PILs.
So she essentially wants this to be a huge prank and thinks it would be hilarious. She likes trends and I guess wants to follow this one but I think it's taking it too far. She's got a few thousand followers on her Tiktok account, so I'm assuming she wants to film the experience for views (it wouldn't be the first time).

AIBU to be miffed as it essentially means no one has done any Christmas food shopping (besides sides and drinks that we were planning on bringing) and gutted we would be eating fast food burgers and to think this is not funny at all?

Is she serious? What do you have kicking around that you can mak a dinner out of?!

darkbluelight · 25/12/2022 05:05

I think that will be a horrible experience.
I've seen videos on YouTube and it looks horrendous anyway, but to go on Christmas Day? They will be gutted.
Watch the videos online and ask yourself if you want you and your facility to be treated like that on Xmas day while eating burgers and fries.

Unless your parents are total pranksters and will love this kind of thing - I wouldn't go.

Oddbutnotodd · 25/12/2022 05:06

Never heard of Karens. Who’d want to go to a burger joint on Christmas Day!

Outtasteamandluck · 25/12/2022 05:09

Gawd this is horrendous

Tashface · 25/12/2022 05:15

What is the "concept of Karen's Diner" that you mention?

Tabitha888 · 25/12/2022 05:16

Oh my goodness, I think this is awful. Especially as the older generation won't really get the concept in many ways, it'll be so rude to them. I highly doubt it'll be funny. That's so sad 😓

Glittertwins · 25/12/2022 05:18

I'd definitely not be going and I'd be telling my parents why too.

gianfrancogorgonzola · 25/12/2022 05:21

If this is real its incredibly cruel. Tell her no, warn both sets of parents immediately.

OnlyTheWeedsGrow · 25/12/2022 05:26

Why would you allow her to exploit the family for “likes”? I would never forgive this if it happened in real life.

wildseas · 25/12/2022 05:31

Luckily you have sides and drinks. Have you got anything in the freezer which you could use as a main? Hopefully you’ll have some veg in.

prank her back by having your parents to yours for a nice Christmas lunch!

Google it and you'll see videos. I've seen it on TikTok.
It's a fast food place - burgers and fries etc.
and the staff are purposefully awful with you. Speak to you like crap. Swear at you. Call you names.

There was one video I saw where the staff threw someone's fries down on to the table and they went everywhere, and then she threw tomato ketchup down and it went all over the fries.
The girl was actually upset about it and tried saying to the staff member "you really didn't need to do that" but of course that just makes the staff rant on some more horrible, abusive nonsense.
It's awful basically.

ZED55JAX0 · 25/12/2022 05:57

No sounds horrendous
id not find this funny if she’s really doing that!

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/12/2022 05:59

According to their Facebook page they’re closed. Are you sure this isn’t part of the prank?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 25/12/2022 05:59

That's a really shitty to do when it's too late for you to get an Christmas food in.

I think both sets of parents will hate it. I'd tell them and you can make your own plans/raid freezers and cupboards together.

She's only doing it to make a 'hilarious' video for Tik Tok. What a selfish cow. Let her sit in 'Karen's Diner' by herself.

Alreadyxmas · 25/12/2022 06:01

I totally agree with others and I wouldn't go, I truly mean that.

ZekeZeke · 25/12/2022 06:07

Hoping this isnt real but if its true, what a mean and spiteful thing to do.
Presume it's your DH's sister and her husband?
Leave your DH to sort it, let him tell PIL and you stay out of it and stay home.

ZekeZeke · 25/12/2022 06:09

If its your brothers wife, tell him it's not funny and cop the F on and that he needs to sort this shit show out.

quinceh · 25/12/2022 06:21

I wouldn’t mind eating out on Xmas day but that’s a bad venue choice!

fairgame84 · 25/12/2022 06:27

She's pranking you. Their not even open Christmas day.

fairgame84 · 25/12/2022 06:27

*They're

GCAcademic · 25/12/2022 06:40

Oh come on, this isn’t real, people.

PotatoScollop · 25/12/2022 06:50

Totally inappropriate for Christmas Day. Some other time, fine.

I wouldn't be going any other time either, for the simple fact she likely wants to film it and show to her thousands of followers on TikTok. Friends taking pictures/photos for themselves or to share with friends? No probs. To share with thousands of randomers? Especially without the express consent of your family? Nah thanks, I appreciate my privacy.

I'd also not be supporting anywhere that doesn't give staff xmas day off, personally.

Nope I wouldn't be going and I'd be telling the parents. She should grow up.

Ladybug14 · 25/12/2022 07:02

It doesn't look like the diner is open today.

A prank thread about a prank 🙄🤥
