Christmas cancelled - WWYD?

BilaB · 24/12/2022 14:51

We've just found out that my parents in law have the flu. They didn't tell us because they thought they'd be ok, but they're really not up for hosting tomorrow and don't want to pass it on which is fair enough.

So it'll be just DH and I (and the dog) tomorrow. We have zero food (or alcohol!) in because we were meant to be away for a couple of nights.

Wwyd? Just do party food? Get a takeaway? I'm going to have to brave the shops soon!

Oh what a fabulous opportunity to have whatever you fancy. I would personally go for a couple of really good steaks, some good wine, meats, cheese, something sweet. Get yourself down to marks & sparks and grab some tasty bargains 🥂

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/12/2022 15:24

I've just got back from Sainsburys,
Much quieter and still well stocked( apart from the cracker biscuits which had been raided)
Most supermarkets open until 7pm, so go and get what you fancy

Willmafrockfit · 24/12/2022 15:24

best time to go shopping

Is this meant to be a difficult dilemma ? 😵‍💫

That's really mean. I'd be gutted if I was planning to spend Christmas with family and it got cancelled last minute ☹️.

I'm sorry OP but everyone has given great advice re the shops. Hope you get lots of nice food and manage to enjoy.

The OP doesn't say anything about being gutted. She might be relieved for all you know. She was asking whether people would get a takeaway or party food

Surely just get whatever you want?

I actually agree with you, I’m surprised by the number of threads from people confused as to what to do, shops are still open, it’s hardly a dilemma.

FlissyPaps · 24/12/2022 15:35

You sit at home dithering and starve. Surely it’s just too much to do a last minute unplanned food shop.

Theunamedcat · 24/12/2022 15:37

Take away for tonight party food and drinks tomorrow 🤪

lap90 · 24/12/2022 15:40

Just go to the shops. I went Tesco earlier and plenty of turkeys now heavily reduced including the one i bought yesterday.

1FootInTheRave · 24/12/2022 15:41

Take away curry.

If none open tomorrow, order this eve and reheat.

ThereIbledit · 24/12/2022 15:43

Yeah just head to the supermarket and get whatever you fancy, traditional Xmas or not. Have a lovely chilled day at home with DH and the dog and do the christmas meal with your PIL another day when they are better.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 24/12/2022 15:46

I've just been into two supermarkets and both really quiet - get yourself off to buy your Christmas meal of choice, OP!

Hillary17 · 24/12/2022 15:49

This happened to us a few years ago. Braved the shops and got Christmas dinner essentials but all easy stab and go type stuff. Was all 50% off too and ended up being pretty easy & simple!

Esssa · 24/12/2022 15:52

Get to the supermarket, buy lemsips or similar and trade the in-laws for the Christmas food they will be too poorly to cook or eat. Win win.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 24/12/2022 15:57

Same here. Family got covid so I’m home alone. Had nothing in.

Braved the shops and now have:

Croissants
potatoes sliced ready for making dauphinois
a serious piece of sirloin
red cabbage
cauliflower cheese (prepped and ready to cook tomorrow)
pigs in blankets
sausage meat stuffing
a lot of cheese
a lot of booze
box of chocolates
chicken to whack in the oven on Boxing Day

I’m sad not to be with family but I’ll eat and drink well.

Allsnotwell · 24/12/2022 15:59

Tescos today was like a mid week morning - no queues and lots of what we needed.

Christmas lunch is still possible!

Lollypop701 · 24/12/2022 16:00

I’d go for oven food…. Party foods, roast potatoes and cheese n crackers. Alcohol of choice. Pjs all day. Maybe a board game. Job done

Elerandooo · 24/12/2022 16:00

Alcohol and a picky tea 👌🏻 It’s what we’re having tonight but id happily have it Christmas Day too!

OhmygodDont · 24/12/2022 16:01

Too late now but Morrisons where 50% off turkeys, aldi was 75% off all fruit and veg, plus all turkeys sworn to be the cheapest with printed out paper price updates.

hopefully you got what you wanted/needed. Spar will be open still and is open tomorrow for booze as will most nisa shops for part of the day. Order a take away if you didn’t get the food you want plenty of places will be open.

Iguanainanigloo · 24/12/2022 16:01

Our Tesco still had plenty of everything today, and not too busy at all. Get out there and grab the essentials and enjoy a quiet couple of days at home 😊

Flakjacketon · 24/12/2022 16:03

We've had to cancel last minute too. We were going to DDs but Son In Law has flu; however we have the food as we were cooking dinner to allow them to enjoy DC on Xmas Day.
DD is now scrabbling for food and DH and I have enough to feed 7.

ZenNudist · 24/12/2022 16:05

I'm in sainsbury's right now and it's fab. You could pick up the whole of Christmas no queues at any til because they have so many staff on. Shelves are well stocked. Just been in morrisons and there was a delicious looking shin of beef like slow cooked dish you bung in the oven.

I was on the hunt for a cooking apron aswe are visiting and they haven't any, hence the two shop dash but I was thinking how fab it is that you can still even buy a tree at b&m next door. Will all thus stuff be discounted after boxing day?

ChocolateCroissantCafe · 24/12/2022 16:07

I'm in favour of the 'go to the shops and see what's in' idea. Some branches have loads of party food left, others it's vanished but you'll still find classic dinner foods. Both good but bit disappointing once you start looking forward to the option that's inevitably out of stock.

UniversalAunt · 24/12/2022 16:13

Last minute dash to the supermarket - check out the deli counter as you may pick up some freshly sliced meats, possibly sliced turkey. The big shops want to clear the chilled cabinets.

I stood next to one chap late Christmas Eve waiting to be served at the deli counter, he got the best part of a cooked turkey breast sliced for next to £nothing. I had already bought a raw bird otherwise I’d have done the same.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/12/2022 16:15

If you hit the supermarket with an open mind I bet you can get amazing bargains this afternoon!
