To think that being on the phone on speaker like this is rude?

Disclaimer: I am taking an overnight coach to visit family for Christmas so I am tired and cranky!

Several passengers on the coach (including the person sat next to me) are having phone conversations but doing it where they have the phone loud and on speaker so you can hear both sides. Why do people do this?? Most people are clearly trying to sleep (like me) and there was even an announcement to say if you are listening to music/watching anything please use headphones and keep the noise down. Same goes for phone calls surely??

Aibu to think this is bloody rude? At least normal phone conversations aren't so loud and you don't hear both people talking 😡

YANBU, that’s awful

MolesOnPoles · 24/12/2022 07:54

So so so rude.

A man on the train with me recently was doing this. I could see his screen, and his camera was reversed the the person he was FaceTiming could only see the back of the seat in front.

This has added to my view that people who do this are mostly thick.

I do this but I am partially deaf. Maybe consider that as a possibility, OP.

StrawberryWater · 24/12/2022 08:00

So rude.

I’d at least tell the one next to me to pack it in.

would headphones work for you?

Strugglingtodomybest · 24/12/2022 08:05

Really rude and self-absorbed.

@FortSalem86 would you carry on a conversation on a coach like this though, with people trying to sleep, when you've already been told to keep the noise down?

LightDrizzle · 24/12/2022 08:06

So rude and selfish. Also people playing games and videos on their phones in public places without headphones or on mute.

PuppyMonkey · 24/12/2022 08:07

I’m cringing just thinking about the idea of everyone on a coach hearing my phone conversations - how do people do it? Must be a different generation or something.Confused

@FortSalem86 sorry but this isn’t an argument for being rude and anti social. It’s not just about using the phone in this way, it’s the time and location, in a public area when people might want to sleep.
You could just make your phone call at another time.

Aphidsandhoneybees · 24/12/2022 08:12

Very rude, I don’t know why people would do this.

comeundone · 24/12/2022 08:14

If I'm on my own I much prefer to talk this way on the phone, find it easier to hear and I'm less likely to accidentally mute myself with my face. But in public that's unacceptable, and doubly so on transport where you can't just move away. Headsets exist for a reason.

Would you have a call on a busy coach at nighttime or text chat?

It’s Mumsnet’s law that if someone does anything antisocial, it takes 10 posts before someone comes on imploring

“but it could be a hidden disability…”

Being partially deaf must be challenging in certain scenarios. But please, can I ask @FortSalem86 as others have.. surely do headphones not also allow you to hear the other person, but with more accuracy and focus of sound into your ears?

Blondlashes · 24/12/2022 08:18

Earplugs. Always have earplug for long distance public transport

Athenen0ctua · 24/12/2022 08:22

I wouldn't be bothered by quiet five minute conversations before 10pm, not on speaker though. People should text instead if they are able to, quiet conversation if you are calling your nan on her landline.

This!! I'm the same it's the only way I can hear

clpsmum · 24/12/2022 08:24

I wouldn't be answering if people were trying to sleep though or if I were on public transport etc

Poinsettas · 24/12/2022 08:27

This is why headphones were invented.

RedHelenB · 24/12/2022 08:27

I wouldn't expect a coach to be quiet overnight tbh. If I wanted sleep I'd have earbuds or noise cancelling headphones.

Norachance · 24/12/2022 08:30

Someone I work with does this. We have a room for eating lunch and even though there are six of us in there eating and reading/chatting/ just sitting quietly she will start making phone calls on speaker disturbing everyone. She is absolutely included in chats so no reason for this other than (I think) a form of attention.

picklemewalnuts · 24/12/2022 08:33

Hold a conversation with an imaginary friend, on your phone.

" Hello? Hello? Yes? I'm ringing because I can't sleep. No. All the other idiots on the coach are having loud conversations on speaker phone. Too noisy to rest. So I thought I'd ring you instead."

Devoutspoken · 24/12/2022 08:33

Coaches should be quiet over night, these people are selfish fuckers who should use headphones

Well text people in public then. Don't be bloody rude and inconsiderate

Clymene · 24/12/2022 08:37

I would get up and go to the front of the coach and ask them to make an announcement that the no noise rule also applies to phones.

Overthebow · 24/12/2022 08:38

Yes it’s very rude. It’s rude on public transport any time of the day but especially at night. I don’t know why people do this, do they just not care about others at all? There’s no excuse even with hidden disabilities, just have the call at another time. The only exception is if it’s a life or death call.
