To think that being on the phone on speaker like this is rude?

Disclaimer: I am taking an overnight coach to visit family for Christmas so I am tired and cranky!

Several passengers on the coach (including the person sat next to me) are having phone conversations but doing it where they have the phone loud and on speaker so you can hear both sides. Why do people do this?? Most people are clearly trying to sleep (like me) and there was even an announcement to say if you are listening to music/watching anything please use headphones and keep the noise down. Same goes for phone calls surely??

Aibu to think this is bloody rude? At least normal phone conversations aren't so loud and you don't hear both people talking 😡

It’s Mumsnet’s law that if someone does anything antisocial, it takes 10 posts before someone comes on imploring

“but it could be a hidden disability…”

Being partially deaf must be challenging in certain scenarios. But please, can I ask @FortSalem86 as others have.. surely do headphones not also allow you to hear the other person, but with more accuracy and focus of sound into your ears?

Absolutely. No one can just be rude, badly behaved, stupid or ignorant.

There is always some long reach about why this might have happened

Actually it doesnt make any difference if someone is deaf, it doesnt give someone the right to be anti social and intrusive into someone elses space. Make the call at another time, use headphones or text the conversation instead.

@user1497207191 unfortunately my trust doesn't do that. They have apparently trailed it but no matter how much I beg for one I'm told no. Which obviously would be amazing and life changing with regards things like tv and phones. I just can't afford the thousands private hearing aids cost and I'm awaiting fairly risky surgery on one ear and I may lose all my hearing in that ear anyway.

Thanks though. SmileSo pleased you have good benefit from them. Does it auto connect or do you have to do something to switch it?

I do this but I am partially deaf. Maybe consider that as a possibility, OP.

I’m partially deaf too but I’d never be so inconsiderate as to do this. In your own home or on the street fine. On a coach where you’re disturbing everyone else, no.

It’s not just young people either. Lots of middle aged to elderly people too. A 60+ friend of ours sometimes plays music out loud from his phone but fortunately his wife soon gives him a bollocking. He’s quite an oblivious bloke generally.

I hate it when people prop their phone or tablet up at the table and eat talking all the time to the other person, because of the ambient noise and their own chewing they have the volume up quite high too.

A friend of mine joins in the conversation when he sees people do this. It's hilarious to see but his wife is always mortified.

Lol, I think I might steal that idea.

Join in the conversation.... 😈

Absolutely, and I did this just recently. Was waiting for the tram and a girl was literally SHOUTING at her mate on Facetime. God I had a headache listening to them. I gestured for her to cool it, but it was ignored. Huh!
So in a fit of pique I stood behind the girl and got my face in the facetime, big smile and said Hi I'm enjoying listening to your absolute shite talk, would you keep it down we are not at the circus.

Reader, the call ended v soon after that and girl moved down the line. I was shaking with adrenalin but I didn't care. I'm doing it again too if it happens. I'm older now and can be grumpy if I want.
