Are Crocs fine to drive in?

TinfoilTwat · 23/12/2022 01:45

Teenage dd is learning to drive. I always tell her not to wear Crocs to drive and instead ask her to change into sneakers. She says I'm being weird and random about this, and that Crocs are no better or worse for driving in than other shoes. AIBU? Or, AIBWAR (Am I Being Weird And Random)?

I drive in mine without a problem.

ScrabbleRabbler · 23/12/2022 01:48

Flip flops are the issue, quite dangerous to drive in

EllesB · 23/12/2022 01:52

YABU for allowing Crocs in your household. Hth.

That's fair.

She should get used to driving in all types of shoes (even barefoot) in case she needs to get out in a hurry.

pljftu · 23/12/2022 02:05

Perfectly fine to drive in.

UWhatNow · 23/12/2022 02:41

I bloody love a croc

HirplesWithHaggis · 23/12/2022 02:50

I love my crocs, but wouldn't drive wearing them. I don't think there's enough "feel" between foot and pedal because of the thick sole, and would be concerned that if one came off my foot it might get lodged under the brake pedal, leaving me unable to slow down/stop.

LilyPeace · 23/12/2022 02:56

I don't think they're suitable for driving, especially for a learner. As much as I love them, they're too wide and clunky.

PuttingDownRoots · 23/12/2022 03:51

A shoe that can fall off has the potential to become stuck under a pedal.

Personal preference is lace up shoes (or boots).

What does her instructor think?

PuttingDownRoots · 23/12/2022 03:54

Its rule 97 in highway code... clothes and footwear shouldn't get in the way

Me too.

I'd drive happily in lots of different footwear but crocs never feel safe to me.

The soles are too thick & rigid they aren't secured well to your foot (extremely loose footwear) and you don't have as good control over the pedals in car and more suitable footwear.

Sounds like some PPs manage it but it's despite the inappropriate footwear not sue to it!

Your DD is back answering - that teen eye rolling- and not hearing your points that are genuine concerns. Maybe her driving instructor can explain to her.

Ffsmakeitstop · 23/12/2022 05:23

A learner would be better in trainers but personally I wear flips flops. I only don't wear them at work or when it's icy as I have awkward feet.

Too right! 🤣

Sparklingbrook · 23/12/2022 05:33

Not suitable for driving in, and IMO should be reserved for trips to the bin, hanging washing out etc and not leaving the house.

pelargoniums · 23/12/2022 05:35

Just the one trip to the bin, surely, then barefoot on the way back.

I begrudgingly keep one pair of communal Crocs by the back door but that’s it. You can’t even wear those when it’s raining. Horrible things.

ChimChimeny · 23/12/2022 05:46

My friend crashed her car driving in hers, the right one slipped off and sideways so she was trying to break but couldn't and drove into the back.of the car in front.

maybe with the strap.around her heel but mine are so.wide i'd worry id press two pedals at once by mistake

Did no one tell you the world wide Web was global?

Astrak · 23/12/2022 06:06

Definitely not suitable for driving in for all the above reasons.
Perhaps have a word with her driving instructor.

I’m in the UK but know what is meant by ‘sneakers’ it’s not a big deal. You’ve no idea where posters come from. They may indeed be in America or American. 😮
