Are Crocs fine to drive in?

Teenage dd is learning to drive. I always tell her not to wear Crocs to drive and instead ask her to change into sneakers. She says I'm being weird and random about this, and that Crocs are no better or worse for driving in than other shoes. AIBU? Or, AIBWAR (Am I Being Weird And Random)?

Our driving instructor says no.

Crocs are my sensible shoes that I put on to avoid driving in shoes I don't feel comfortable driving in!

The only shoes I don't like driving in are heels and walking boots.

I think your driving instructor is sensible. I wonder what would happen if you turned up to take your test in a pair.

And I wouldn't drive barefoot as I don't think I could use the pedals properly without shoes on.

OK, I can kind of see how people might prefer certain footwear but this has me confused- how do shoes help you operate the pedals in a way that you can't without them?

I love driving barefoot in summer but I can see why people wouldn't feel safe if they've always driven in shoes.

Shoes feel sturdier, they protect your feet and have a better grip than the skin on the soles of your feet.

The first time I drove barefoot (because my shoes were so sweaty it felt dangerous) I was so nervous but I loved it and now do it all the time in summer!

For an experienced driver maybe. Not for a learner.

@PuttingDownRoots

'Personal preference is lace up shoes (or boots).'

I'm for the belt and braces approach so always wear those big fishing waders.

I think as long as the moveable part is flipped round behind her ankle to hold her foot in the shoe, it should be fine.
