Your unpopular Christmas opinions

Yorkshire puddings belong on a Christmas dinner

Christmas dinner - other than Yorkshires and pigs in blankets - is fucking disgusting, and that goes for every course

Elf is a crap movie.

Too many parents get over invested in their child believing in Santa. The reason they love Santa is because he brings a shit load of toys. As long as they’re still getting the toys they’re happy.

Real Christmas trees smell horrible and look shit. Lopsided with bare patches. Yeah looks fab!

Grin Baffling. A plastic copy of a tree looks nicer than an actual tree?! I'm wondering if you look at trees growing outside and want to neaten them up so that they don't look 'lopsided'!

Fairislefandango · 23/12/2022 11:15

Just sitting down being thankful for things we have, without all the nonsense that makes it tedious.

Just sitting down and being thankful sounds pretty tedious to me! You can do that any time.

MooseBreath · 23/12/2022 11:31

Pantomime is horrible.
Mince pie is disgusting.
Mulled wine is gross.
Santa lives at the North Pole, not Lapland.
Christingle is truly bizarre.
Nativity (the film) is crap.
Christmas dinner should be at actual dinner time, not lunch or late afternoon.

Facefail · 23/12/2022 11:52

it is meant to be an unpopular opinion thread!

This! The amount of people getting their arse on, arguing against someone else's opinion is extraordinary, given that this is meant to be an unpopular opinion thread.

Honestly, the concept of this thread is that people give unpopular opinions about Christmas and you give your unpopular Christmas opinion. There's no need for a rammy.

Its meant to be the season of good will (for unpopular opinions about the season of good will ), or something.

So how about a bit of live and let cantankerous curmudgeon live, folks!

DogInATent · 23/12/2022 11:59

I also agree with every single one of these!!

Buying mounds of presents for other adults is ridiculous.
Buying mounds of presents for children is nearly as bad.
Only Fools and Horses isn't funny.
Die Hard is basically the only decent Christmas film.

Wensleydale cheese with cranberries... brilliant

I call reverse.

Nope, I mean every word of it! Would also like to add to brilliant items: Christmas cake eaten with thin slices of very mature Cheddar cheese, smoked salmon (eaten straight from the packet, with a fork, whilst standing by the fridge), and green triangles from Quality Street.

Cheesy footballs are shit

They're not exclusively Christmas food though

10HailMarys · 23/12/2022 14:11
  • If a child genuinely believes that Father Christmas is real beyond the age of 7, rather than just playing along for the presents, they are possibly just not very bright
  • All American Christmas stuff is shit, including saying 'Santa' instead of 'Father Christmas'
  • 'Christmas jumpers', 'Christmas pyjamas' and 'Christmas duvet covers' should not be a thing
  • Proper Christmas should feel a bit spooky somehow
  • Pigs in blankets are really nothing special
  • Christmas specials of any TV show are usually not as good as a normal episode
  • It's not in the slightest bit unusual to hate Christmas and it doesn't make you different or special. It's totally fine and normal to not be into it, but banging on about it like you're the only person in the world who hates it and/or wearing a jumper that says 'Bah Humbug' is not a substitute for having a personality
  • Boxing Day is nicer than Christmas Day itself
TallulahBetty · 23/12/2022 14:12

THAT Mariah Carey song is overplayed, overrated and over-sung. Just SHUT UP

entropynow · 23/12/2022 14:21

pictoosh · 23/12/2022 08:39

Ok, let me fix that for you.

People in the northern hemisphere need a winter festival to break up the long, dark months. If it hadn't been hijacked by Christians faking it as Jesus birthday, it would have remained a celebration of returning light. People can do what the fuck they like you know.

People who post aggressive 'how dare anyone do different from what I like' things like this have something lacking in their life, nd tgwy don't really mean people can do what they like.
They mean they can, and everyone else better shut up and follow the crowd.

DogInATent · 23/12/2022 14:22

Really? Even in the Seventies we referred to Santa growing up in the UK. I've never associated that name with USA.

Although I was today years old when I realised that Santa Claus is obviously a corruption of Sankt Nikolaus.

Downunderduchess · 23/12/2022 09:33

Of course absolutely they can be! I’m not religious (extremely lapsed catholic). I have no admiration for anyone simply because they say they are christian or any other religion. Some of the most terrible things have been done in the name of religion.

And some of the best things if you know more history than propaganda.
Hey, that's an unpopular opinion around here for sure.
Pretty much MN policy that religion=evil incarnate

TheRedLip · 23/12/2022 10:16

I guess I get giddy at Christmas because I never quite grew up? I'm like the boy in Polar Express who can hear Santa's sleigh bell all his life. On the outside I'm a middle aged Mum with DC at university, but inside I'm still an excited 9 year old.

You missed the point of the thread didn’t you .
it’s for people to say unpopular opinions .
I don’t get the fuss but I don’t growl at everyone who is giddy in real life I’ve just said it on here .

BaublesandBangles · 23/12/2022 15:23

My unpopular opinion is this thread is shit as are all unpopular opinion threads.

Can’t believe someone said cheesy footballs are shit. They are bloody great!
This comment alone makes me think we’ve sunk to new depths.
Dates. Stuffed, whatever. Awful. Just leave the cheesy footballs.

Love cheesy footballs so much I already ate the christmas ones and had to replace. Love mince pies too but not Xmas pudding. Always have turkey, Yorkshire puds, pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese for Xmas dinner. hate all the consumerism crap and buying stuff that no-one needs or wants. I've really cut down this year.

xmaslurgy · 23/12/2022 15:47

luckylavender · 23/12/2022 13:15

They're not exclusively Christmas food though

Why would anyone eat them at any other time of year?

luckylavender · 23/12/2022 15:53

@xmaslurgy - party food. In the 70s cheesy footballs, twiglets, cheese and pineapple on sticks were de rigeur party food. Vol au vents and sausage rolls if you were posh.

xmaslurgy · 23/12/2022 15:56

Haven't had a vol au vent for years! Really want one now.

IveShaggedSomeMingers · 23/12/2022 15:58

There will be snow in Africa this Christmastime

Ponoka7 · 23/12/2022 16:09

Christmas is not just for children. All those saying gifts end at 21, taking it to the extreme do you neither give nor receive gifts if you have adult children? According to the children only brigade I need to buy one gift for my 13yo niece and forget about everyone else.

I think people should do what suits them. But, no, I don't give presents or cards to my adult children and don't receive any either. Me and my partner don't do gifts either.

Sinterklaas spawned Santa Claus, the immigrants took it over and dialects changed it. We love to criticise anything taken from the US, completely ignoring the German/Netherland traditions that we've adopted thanks to having German etc Royalty.

girlfriend44 · 23/12/2022 17:27

Why do people have presents just because it's Christmas.
Most people have got far too much anyway.
Just have a present on your birthday that is your special day after all.

thesurrealist · 23/12/2022 17:31

Adults also deserve presents
Christmas pudding is disgusting, as is Christmas cake
Roast is just roast and dull as fuck
And for the one to get me slaughtered on here.....the sound of children singing is like fingernails on a blackboard
