Am I the only one who doesn’t do stockings?

My kids have never had stockings. I think just because when they were young I forgot to buy them and then just never bothered 😂 everything is wrapped and goes under the tree. I find most stockings to be really small and barely anything would fit in them!

Yes you are the only one 🤣

idontevenknowanyonecalledblurb · 22/12/2022 19:07

@MoreSleepPleasee haha Grin

AHelpfulHand · 22/12/2022 19:08

I dont do them either. Unless its make up or skincare then they end up being filled with bits of rubbish that ends up broken and in the bin.

DuplicateUserName · 22/12/2022 19:10

Our 'stockings' were sacks that went in front of the fire place. The only presents in there was the one from Santa and a couple of little things from Rudolph.

But I heard the other day on the radio that 64% of Brits don't do stockings, although goodness knows how they got that figure!

farawayplaces · 22/12/2022 19:11

We never had them in my childhood in the seventies/eighties but my dc have them

Againstmachine · 22/12/2022 19:11

Growing up we didn't have stockings we had pillowcases which got a present in later at night which we could open.

MrsTumblebee · 22/12/2022 19:11

No. We don’t do them either.

in fact most of the present are laid out unwrapped on the chairs and sofa set. It’s the most beautiful of sights. But we also have a few things in a pillow case and anything given by aunties etc are always wrapped by them and also laid on the couch and chairs.

my mother was the best at laying things out for Christmas and I have the most magical memories of going into the living room during the night and seeing everything there with just the lights from the Christmas tree on and the glow of the coal fire. HAPPY, HAPPY DAYS ❤️

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/12/2022 19:12

Sorry but looking back at my childhood the stocking was the best part- I love my children opening theirs.

Nearlychristmas123 · 22/12/2022 19:14

No stockings here either

We never had them as children, so I never bothered with my DC. Everything gets wrapped, under the tree and utter chaos ripping everything open at once.

my DC have mentioned them but I don’t even know what I’d put in them. If stuff went in stockings, under the tree wouldn’t look as full

Hugasauras · 22/12/2022 19:14

DH's family never did them. I think it's a shame as a stocking was one of my fave bits of Xmas as a child but everyone has their own traditions! I love shopping for DD's stocking though.

ColdHandsHotHead · 22/12/2022 19:14

My parents didn't. I begged my mother to do them one year, and she did, very grudgingly, with about three things in. Worse than no stocking at all.

Helpmesortit · 22/12/2022 19:14

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet you are not the only one!! I’m 37 and I NEVER had a stocking, just lots of gifts! 😆 I do they same with my dc. They have 3 gifts from Santa and 28 from us ranging in size examples are Pokémon cards, Nintendo DS game, alarm clock for my DS and my dd has hair bobbles, board games and craft sets. I wrap everything and the Santa gifts get separate Santa paper. The Santa gifts go under the tree and the rest gets put on either side of the couch. There’s no wrong or right way.

the pics are what they are getting minus a couple of things. I don’t think it’s excessive to be honest.

We have stockings but I don’t get what the big deal is with stockings on mumsnet. I don’t buy specifically for the stocking it’s just whatever fits inside it.

vincettenoir · 22/12/2022 19:16

I agree with you that they are often full of junk. But it’s a good way to eek out the present opening. I do one for my dd but I don’t think it’s an integral part of Xmas day. It’s not bread sauce 🤣

FoodieToo · 22/12/2022 19:17

No stocking either !! Didn't have one as a child and neither did my husband .
Just never thought of them.
Glad now as it would most likely be useless rubbish !!!

MegaClutterSlut · 22/12/2022 19:18

I never had stocking growing up but I've always done one for the dc

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 22/12/2022 19:19

We do stockings, always had as children and our now adult children still want them. Their main present is either something they've asked for or money, so stockings allow for some unexpected small gifts. tBut it doesn't really matter, we all do Christmas our way, please don't put pressure on yourself, just do what works for you

PuttingDownRoots · 22/12/2022 19:19

If you've never had them you probably not missed them. But I love the snuggling up with the kids on Christmas morning in bed while they excitedly examine the toothbrush and cuddly toy that santa has brought. Then finding bits of wrapping paper in our bed that night.

Finding those silly little things ndcthen the unwrapping is my favourite part of Christmas.

There does seem to be some very emotionally invested people in stockings with strict rules and traditions!

TBH I highly doubt my kids would find stockings the ‘best bit’ of Christmas. They like big fuck off presents like scooters and toy castles

Never had a stocking when I was little and never plan to do them in the future

NoAprilFool · 22/12/2022 19:23

I always had one growing up in the 70s/80s (one of my Dad’s kilt socks!). My happiest Christmas memories are piling into my parents bed with my sister and opening the stocking.

My DC say it’s their favourite part of Christmas too. I love hearing about everyone’s varied traditions 😊

janglealltheway · 22/12/2022 19:29

We didn't have stockings as a child, we had a Santa's sack which was like a Christmas themed pillowcase really.

Wilkolampshade · 22/12/2022 19:31

I get round the problem with getting stuff to fit by using a pair of tights OP. 2 kids, so one leg each. Our stockings are a bit mad though and can end up 4/5 ft long and knobbly as hell as I make no concessions re size of presents stuffed in.

Mumof1andacat · 22/12/2022 19:33

We had plastic stocking as kids. We've never done a stocking for my 10yr old

TheHateIsNotGood · 22/12/2022 19:36

Well Lydia if your dc only like big fuck off presents then stockings aren't for your family. If there are no small pleasures that they enjoy then that is so.

A parental benefit of stockings/pillow cases is that it keeps the dc occupied for longer in the early morning before they come and jump/wake you.
