Am I the only one who doesn’t do stockings?

My kids have never had stockings. I think just because when they were young I forgot to buy them and then just never bothered 😂 everything is wrapped and goes under the tree. I find most stockings to be really small and barely anything would fit in them!

I don’t do stockings either. The types of things that I think people put in stockings my DC have in their Christmas Eve boxes.

I didn't have a stocking growing up and was a bit envious of those who did. DS1 got a stocking as a Christening present, which I loved, so we've always done stockings for the kids. I have suggested that they are all a bit big now (in their 20s) but they have insisted that they aren't. I have some lovely memories of them piling onto our bed to open them, so I don't think I'll stop them yet. This year they're getting a small card game, socks, sweets and an IKEA phone holder.

Nope I never had them as a child and I've never done them.

I don’t, only because my DS has a mini tree in his room, so i’ll fill a gift bag of “stocking fillers” and put that under his tree instead.

Wow newsflash!

I've never considered not having stockings!! I hate hate hate buying Xmas gifts, I wish I knew about this, Id never have started it

Never even heard of anyone "doing" stockings until this year when MN seems obsessed with them. I'm mid 30!!

I do know a stocking shape is "Christmassy" and seen e.g. cards with cartoon stockings nailed above a fire. But I assumed they were an old thing from back in the days when most people were poor and could only afford a couple of very small presents, hence the stocking to put them in.

Shots fired!! 😂

There does seem to be some very emotionally invested people in stockings with strict rules and traditions!

Yet you have also made a post about stockings.

Or is it about your big fuck off presents instead 😉

TBH I highly doubt my kids would find stockings the ‘best bit’ of Christmas. They like big fuck off presents like scooters and toy castles

Was quite on board til you said that. 😬

Pre-consumerism and plastic tat our xmas stockings didn't have much in them - a few chocolate coins, a tangerine (or the threat of a lump of coal if you were naughty) and a small present. Traditionally the stocking contained all of the xmas presents you would get, even the poorest families would try and make somthing special about the day for children.

It doesn't matter if you don't do stockings, it is after all just a tradition, but many families do enjoy it.

Not the values I'd want my DC to have

caringcarer · 22/12/2022 20:36

We call them stockings but they are really large Xmas sacks with children's names on. My adult DC still have theirs and hang them up for filling too.

My DC are 16 and 17 and the stocking opening on our bed is their favourite part of Christmas! I'm going to miss it one day
