The Christmas stuff should bloody arrive?

Not a single mince pie, Christmas pudding, cranberry sauce or turkey (in any form) in the whole shop apparently.

Surely IANBU?

I don't do a full xmas shop online anymore since the debacle of 2016 when tesco cancelled my entire £150 shop about 2 hours before it was due and I had to take baby dd and toddler ds to the supermarket and do it all!!

GrinAndVomit · 22/12/2022 19:10

It’s really irritating when this happens. I book mine for the 21/22 so I have time to get any extra bits I’m missing.

When my husband and I were struggling financially, I remember our Christmas Asda delivery being horrendous. I think about 15 out of 20 items were substitutions and most of them were completely unusable… For example, I ordered apple sauce and was substituted with marmalade.
They took the payment before it arrived and didn’t refund it until days later and we couldn’t afford to do a second shop.

Luckily, it was just the two of us so we were happy enough having frozen pizza.

This is the gamble you pay with an online shop. Ok most of the year but when it's an important shop you've made a blunder here.

Figgypuddingpiggyfudding · 22/12/2022 19:13

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g that's great it works for you! You obviously have a need for it and it makes your life easier. As I said, if you have a need, I absolutely understand it.

I just don't understand it as a preference if someone is able to easily get to and walk around a supermarket. But that's fine, I'm sure people don't get my preference for going - I don't see it as trudging and lugging, I enjoy it.

blueflagflyhigh · 22/12/2022 19:13

When I logged in earlier in the week I cldnt get any turkeys with Morrisons. I live next to one so popped in. Place was full of turkeys 🤷🏻‍♀️ I cldnt get a small one though so ended up going elsewhere. I also cldnt get a ham joint from Morrisons well the one I usually buy online. They had many overpriced massive ones 🙄

I'm hoping I don't have any of the main stuff missing mine comes tomorrow morning 🤞🏻

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 22/12/2022 19:21

I booked a Christmas online delivery for the first time ever this year due to not breaking up until later.
I'm actually really disappointed as half the stuff goes out of date tomorrow and most of the other stuff didn't arrive! How the whole shop ran out of crackers is beyond me.
Ended up popping into the shop on the way home to get the rest of the stuff and on the phone to try and replace the stuff that goes out of date!

Matilda1981 · 22/12/2022 19:23

Now this is why I use Morrisons - they pick from a central warehouse rather than a store - had a £200 delivery yesterday and not one single item out of stock or substituted!

NeedAHoliday2021 · 22/12/2022 19:01

Tesco cancelled my mum’s Turkey by text with a a link to rebook. She clicked and they were sold out. Ended up driving 45 minutes to get to Sainsbury and bought one there. How can you pre order a Turkey in November and they just cancel like that?

Bird flu? Thousands of birds have been culled recently. Sorry for your mum though, I'm praying mine is delivered tomorrow 🙏

farawayplaces · 22/12/2022 19:26

I booked my Christmas Eve slot from Ocado yesterday. There were loads available. I was shocked, I only looked on the off chance.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 22/12/2022 19:27

FavouritePi · 22/12/2022 19:03

Yes, ours was from Asda and we had 13 missing items too. Whilst I've been happy with the service previously, the price hikes (I'm talking a £1.30 price hike for one of the items, within a few days) and this might be the end of us using them.

Half of me wants to check whether there's stock in to complain and the other half knows Aldi will probably be much nicer anyway.

Although we're covid free, either me or DH will have to pop to the shops with a mask on just before close or as soon as they open.

Mine was also Asda...

guffaux · 22/12/2022 19:31

I could not contemplate going to a shop 'in real life'- busy, hectic, overcrowded.
I do all my shopping online- my Christmas shop is missing a couple of items, (eg posh curry ready meal, but I have all the ingredients to make one from scratch) and I have a couple of substitutions (different kitchen towels, got M&S salmon instead of ocado salmon) I have an instant shop and a regular delivery slot, so the speed and convenience to shop is a godsend to me- I just edit my order to add any extras we fancy. If we dont get any item, we just work round it.(though we dont have a traditional Christmas lunch so wouldnt be bothered if a 'main component' was missing.
Just as well we're all different, otherwise the 'real' shops would close, and there would be a terrible scrum for delivery slots lol🎅

Hugasauras · 22/12/2022 18:26

Did you just order a generic turkey off the shelf?

😂😂😂

Murdoch1949 · 22/12/2022 19:37

I always get a slot a few days before Christmas, today, then for Christmas Eve. I get the things I can't do without in the earlier slot. Turkey I always get as an Entertaining item, so that is confirmed by 15th. I'd go to M&S and/or Waitrose just before closing on Christmas Eve, you can get fresh turkeys reduced from £50 to £25.

That used to be the case but depends on which area you live in now. Mine switched to local store so I stopped my delivery pass payments and moved to Ocado.
Although I prefer to do the most of the Christmas shop in person. I went at early this morning, it was quiet and everything was in stock except Maille Dijon mustard.

@AllThingsServeTheBeam, that reminds me of one year when someone tried to yank the meat / poultry I had chosen (can't remember as it was several years ago) out of my hands.
After a bit of to and fro with two sets of hands on the 'prize' she gave in!
My DCs were horrified. Grin

I don’t go to our local Tesco food shopping in December having witnessed an actual
fist fight over parsnips one year. I left my trolley and walked out.

Ocado delivered everything I’d ordered on Tuesday night. I avoid the M+S stuff but they’ve been absolutely brilliant for us for years.

ChristmasJingleBalls · 22/12/2022 19:42

Depends when you go. I went to Aldi last night at about 8pm. Got everything in about 40 minutes and it was quiet.

Hahahahohoho · 22/12/2022 19:42

One year we had the Christmas eve delivery, the Tamahawk Steak we had planned to serve on Christmas day didn't arrive - last time I trusted online ordering

justasking111 · 22/12/2022 19:43

ASDA was sold this year. There's teething problems. Aren't the staff striking next month?

Whatnow321 · 22/12/2022 19:49

i Think it’s luck of the draw. I’ve had bad years in the past. This year booked my slot in November, did my full basket on Sunday. Went to add a few non essentials yesterday and noticed if I did loads of things were out of stock and would be removed so didn’t bother updating. Was worried therefore what I’d be missing this morning but credit to Tesco my 1 substitution was large eggs for small eggs (could leave with that)

IaminRome · 22/12/2022 19:50

But if you can change your shop right up until 1/2 days before... Of course you haven't reserved your shopping, you've just reserved the delivery slot?!

Minfilia · 22/12/2022 19:53

I had a Tesco delivery on the 21st and Ocado on the 22nd. No out of stock items and only one (appropriate) sub from Ocado.

The 23rd is leaving it too late to get a perfect Christmas shop. Cupboard bits like crackers and chocolates, booze, well people will have been buying them for weeks. It can’t be a surprise when they run out.

Next time get cupboard stuff in advance, bits in every shop, and use Tesco food to order so it’s guaranteed. I’ve never had a problem doing it this way!

SushiGo · 22/12/2022 19:55

I stopped doing Christmas online deliveries because of this. Just didn't seem worth it to then have to go out again because they missed some key thing!

I reckon the packers have so many more deliveries to do than normal that they are really rushed and don't have as much time to spend looking for substitutes which might be in a different part of the store to usual etc.

We also have the flu so have had a nervous few days and I sympathise! Fortunately well enough today to get round the shop for the essentials and more calpol...

If you are well enough to go out I went early in the morning and it was reasonably quiet with plenty of turkeys left.

Hugasauras · 22/12/2022 20:02

@Headabovetheparakeet Not sure what's funny?! Asda (and Tesco) do turkeys that are specifically ordered for you in advance. That's what we got so knew it would arrive. We had to order that by mid Dec and couldn't cancel it. If you order one that's just off the shelf in store like a normal food item then there's a risk you won't get it.

DazedandConcerned · 22/12/2022 20:02

My Sainsbury’s delivery this morning was complete. No issues. I ordered a bit early this year so I could pop in to get anything that didn’t turn up. Now it’s just turkey from the butchers on the 24th.

Seems to be some supermarkets and not others. Our local Tesco had loads of empty shelves on Sunday.

fdkc · 22/12/2022 20:05

I'm in the ROI and my Tesco delivery came today with every single item, no substitutes either. I didn't order a turkey or ham though, I will get them in the butchers in the morning.
