Wow, Fortnum & Mason's is obscenely £££, £10.50 for a single 3inch hollow nutcracker chocolate.

I knew it was bad, but I wasn't expecting it to be that bad. I went in to see if I could get a £10 Christmassy chocolate gift. Something smallish but nicely packaged. It appears even the smallest boxes are arout £18/19. Not worth it in my opinion. Perhaps they're recouping their carpet cleaning costs after the Just Stop Oil demos recently...🤔

After they (well really DHL but Fortnums chose to use them) messed up an overseas surprise for a friend (not delivered) and turns out it’s not the first time this has happened either, then I wouldn’t bother with them. I got a bottle of their champagne as an apology which to be honest was the least they could do. The champagne didn’t taste any better than the usual supermarket champagne or Moet et Chandon either.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 22/12/2022 16:29

I love their mince pies - £13 a box but the it’s my one christmas indulgence

Always4Brenner · 22/12/2022 16:31

Love their marzipan fruits had some a couple of years ago and the ex in-laws loved the chocolates so for me next year my treats come from there.

TrentCrimm · 22/12/2022 16:31

Very Posh Shop Has Really Quite Dear Prices shocker!

VeronicaBeccabunga · 22/12/2022 16:36

I am lucky enough to receive a F&M gift from my boss every year.
Tbh the chocolate isn't all that brilliant and they do tend to slightly odd flavours. We've had fun with 'blind tasting' them though.

At the Tate Gallery I'm 'Admiral Beccabunga' as I didn't pick a title and it defaulted to top of the list 😂

talomon · 22/12/2022 16:39

Ooh @Christmasinbed balls of steel to post this on AIBU!
I work close by so go in occasionally. I like their pistachio and clotted cream biscuits, and many of their teas. But apart from that quite overpriced with average quality. You can get much better chocolate elsewhere.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/12/2022 16:39

And £20 for a tube of biscuits.

I've always wanted to go to fortnums...if I ever win the lottery, I'll go do a weekly shop there 😂

You wouldn't be able to get every thing you need!

Headabovetheparakeet · 22/12/2022 16:42

Famously expensive shop has high prices, shocking.

LovelyRachel · 22/12/2022 16:44

We bought F&M chocolate coins for Christmassy treat (we loved the tin!)... They taste grim.

Like waxy VERY cheap chocolate.

Such disappointment!

(I found their customer services very good though)

FrankGrillosFloof · 22/12/2022 16:45

I find their lemon curd to be one of the few commercial lemon curds that doesn’t have the consistency of glue.

MilkyYay · 22/12/2022 16:46

Of course they are expensive they are a luxury brand, half their appeal is pricing that makes them inaccessible to most.

LolaSmiles · 22/12/2022 16:47

F&M is something I only heard of once I started using Mumsnet.

It seems another world from the lifestyle I lead, but one day curiosity is going to get the better of me because I want to know if they really are that much nicer than other nice food retailers.

I love their mince pies!! I’ll be opening my box on Christmas Eve, they are the best I’ve ever tasted!

antelopevalley · 22/12/2022 16:48

They rarely come out top on taste tests.

Sprig1 · 22/12/2022 16:49

Interestingly, their jams, chutneys etc are v reasonably priced. We were there at the weekend.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 22/12/2022 15:31

I'd love to know where you find some of the stuff F&M sell at a better price elsewhere. The price they charge is part of their MO - you use the Queen's own grocer, you expect to pay for the exclusivity and the snob value and the stuff yiu can't buy elsewhere. If you wanted value you'd be shopping in Sainsbury.

Try Aldi or Lidl.

BCBird · 22/12/2022 16:53

Shame the helicopter is out of action🤣no chance I'm in a rage about Morissons price hiles🤣🤣

Coxspurplepippin · 22/12/2022 16:55

I've just done the Christmas shop in Aldi. It was carnage. I imagine F&M would have been a far more pleasant experience. Just a shame my entire budget would have been blown on a couple of tubes of biscuits and a box of tea bags.....

kimchifix · 22/12/2022 17:00

It's a luxury shop with luxury prices! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just go in for the smell usually!

SlashBeef · 22/12/2022 17:01

I honestly don't get the fuss but I probably haven't tried enough from there to form a rounded opinion. We got my mum a gift hamper for a big birthday and while it was nice it wasn't nice nice. It was like M&S type food tbh.

BlackberrySky · 22/12/2022 15:23

Try ordering online. Their array of titles when you check out is legendary! Wing Commander, Very Reverand, Lord, Lady, Earl, His Grace... It is mind blowing!

I was recently 'Wing Commander' when I bought my Elvas Plums and then when I ordered my F&M Christmas cards I decided to go for HRH!!

BellePeppa · 22/12/2022 17:09

If it was cheaper they would lose their rich customers. If it’s expensive it’s ‘luxury’. It knows its market. It does amaze me that people can afford such expensive things but there’s a lot of very rich people out there (I’m just not one of them 😕😁).

ditherydotty · 22/12/2022 17:10

Their mince pies are amazing and I don't even like mince pies.
