To feel 'touched out' by my pets?

I have two cats and two dogs and I just feel so irritated and 'touched out' by them recently. I love them all to bits, I really do but when I'm home I honesty do not get a moment to myself.

I have a 9 year old and although she isn't physically demanding, she is emotionally then when I sit down at night when she goes to bed I have animals crawling all over me. Right now I have one dog on my leg, one dog leaning on my back and a cat on my chest clawing at me as soon as I stop clapping him.

My dogs follow me everyyyywhere, to the toilet and if I don't let them in they whine outside. Whenever I sit down, even just for a ten minute coffee the dogs are up licking me, clawing at me to pet them and constantly wanting a cuddle.

I really do love these animals but the constant physical touching is really starting to irritate me. I wouldn't mind at the end of the night on my terms but I feel suffocated and like I just don't get a break.

I remember feeling this way when I was breast feeding but I dont know, do others feel like this with their pets?

Love mine. 2 cats - one hates everyone , the other one "puts me to bed at night by pussyfooting me". 2 dogs , one sleeps on the floor of our bedroom and the labrador just keeps jumping up onto the bed until we are asleep and don't kick her off. Puppy is completely velcro. Sits on the bathmat and looks at me when I go to the loo. ONly slightly weird. Love them. Especially when they sit on your feet.

I think you’ve just got too many pets which all make demands on your limited time & energy. As they die, maybe stick to 2 in future.

Jojo19834 · 21/12/2022 05:24

So I clicked this post thinking ‘don’t get it’ but I actually do get what you mean! Only the one cat now but a nightowl so wants her attention once my 2 year old is in bed and I get an hour to myself before bed. I felt bad as was ignoring her. Totally understand now!

bozzabollix · 21/12/2022 06:56

Three Labradors here, they’re not too bad, one is a puppy so is often off doing bad things that require removing, that’s annoying but totally part of the stage. They like to snuggle on the sofa but that’s no bad thing in the winter. My kids adore them and give them lots of affection so I guess they don’t just look to me.

The cat is lovely but more greedy than even the labs, so he’s more annoying Shen there’s unattended food.

BoxOfCats · 21/12/2022 08:06

I have 2 cats who can't get enough of me, but luckily I feel the same about them. They're both quite needy and if I'm home during the day I'm constantly being meowed at, followed or sat on. In the evenings they yell at me when they want to go to bed, although because they don't like each other I often end up wedged between them.

I really miss them the days I work in the office!

Maybebabyno2 · 21/12/2022 08:27

Omg I moan about this all the time! If its not DP or my son constantly touching me, it's the bloody cats. I feel like my body doesn't belong to me, it belongs to the various creatures (human and feline) that always have to have a part of their body touching mine!

I'm only half joking

Roselilly36 · 21/12/2022 08:33

I understand, sometimes after a demanding day, you need some time to just sit and unwind. We had 3 cats & a dog, long before our DS’ arrived, I loved them dearly but having two DS under two. Once the boys were in bed, the last thing I wanted to do is stroke the dog & cat all evening.

cobblers123 · 21/12/2022 08:41

I have one cat , I can't get away from him, he's constantly trying to sit on me and won't ever take no for an answer. He's spilt hot tea on me before and put his back paw into food on a plate I've been holding when he's suddenly jumped up on to my lap. He's actually quite dangerous at times with that the nearly tripping me up.

He's so clingy, it's really wearing. When he's gone I'm never getting another pet, I just can't stand the thought of another one like him.

I've had five previous cats and although affectionate, they were nothing like the current one.

I do miss them ...

FrostyFifi · 21/12/2022 08:44

I have to ask, why does the cat need to be clapped, it is a performance cat, does it do tricks, I've never come across that before

It's a Scottish word for patting or stroking. I do understand your confusion 😄

undermyskon · 21/12/2022 10:52

I am so glad others feel the same and I'm not some horrible grump. Was just thinking as well, my daughter always wants me to scratch her back or a foot massage when we are lying chilling so I think that combined with the animals is just too much. I have two girl chihuahuas and two boy cats.

I have 3 dogs. Two are mummy’s boys and want to be on me more than my DH. One likes to stretch his paws up my chest and scratch my face which really pisses me off. One is really heavy and hurts my knee. I go to the loo, I have 2 dogs at my feet. I mostly love snuggling them, but sometimes, I know exactly what the OP means about being touched out, particularly if they want to go out. I feel frankly harassed sometimes. I adore them, but I don’t need a dog carousel on my knee!

xogossipgirlxo · 21/12/2022 11:03

Is this universal thing recently? We can't get proper sleep at night, because our cat wakes me and husband touching our faces because he wants to cuddle. He has very furry paws, which we call Hobbits, it really tickles and he knows we will wake up. I seriously don't remember when I slept through the whole night. Other cat is clingy during the day. You might be on a call with prime minister and King Charles, yet he will still sit on your lap 😬

I adore my cats, they are probably the best cats in the world but there are times when I'd just like to sit or sleep without one of them on me. Both are lying on my chest as I type and earlier today one of them jumped on my lap and lay down as I was having a wee.

Much as I like your post and it made me chuckle, I have to take issue with one point I’m afraid. I think you’ll find my cat is the best in the world, although I’m sure yours are lovely 😊

Trying2bemum · 21/12/2022 11:07

Can relate. Have felt this way about the cat since having our son three years ago. Before that the cat was my baby!
DH still adores the cat and will do anything for him, so luckily the cat still enjoys a lot of affection and attention.
But I find myself shoving him off me and needing space! Especially now I’m pregnant!

Salome61 · 21/12/2022 13:13

I'm still haunted by my horrible treatment of my cat after I had my son :( I was Just so busy. I remember hanging out the washing and she was miaowing at me on the wall, I didn't stroke her. I didn't realise she was poorly, I had to have her put to sleep a few weeks later, she had tumours under her tongue.

Ha ha I feel your chihuahua pain and I raise you three of them
Think they might be the worst breed for neediness
They are heat seeking vampires
Mine are t even happy sitting on you, if they want stroking they grab your hand with their front legs until you give in.

WingingItSince1973 · 22/12/2022 22:27

Oh wow I'm so glad to see this post. Only today with my dog pawing me and my cat the other side of me pawing me I just felt so suffocated and want to have my body to myself for 5 mins 😂 Don't get me wrong I absolutely love my pets. We have 3 cats, had 6 at one time but sadly lost 3 the last couple of years and we had 2 dogs but my darling shadow had to be pts 3 weeks ago. I miss her so much. The other dog is a wonderful kind jack russell and I think she's missing her friend too as they were together for 10 years. But I can't sit down without an animal bugging me for a fuss, then the kids and the husband want my attention and I just want to scream leave me alone 😂 But I won't as I love them and they aren't doing anything wrong xxx

This made me laugh far more than it should have, I’m Scottish and clapping a pet means stroking/petting. I had a mental image of the OP giving her cat a round of applause 😂

I have 4 labradors, 2 cats and 3 horses. If I’m not being nudged/nuzzled or mugged for treats in the stables I normally have a nose or a paw on me. It gets competitive when the cars join in…

Ruffpuff · 22/12/2022 22:34

I adore my dog and I love how affectionate she is with me. However, I’ve been sick with the flu the last few days. Sweating and coughing and she’s all over me, in my face. I have absolutely no patience for it at the moment. I’m too hot for her to be pushing into me. I think we all feel like this at times.
