When to have pigs in blankets?

I didn’t grow up eating these at Christmas, Dh did and Dd now likes them..and the dog 😁Last year, I did them sort of before Christmas dinner as little snacks, I’ve since read that people have them *With Christmas dinner? Is it on the same plate as Turkey, potatoes etc?
Also, do you have a starter? Growing up we had prawn cocktail (very 80’s?) and then my mum would do garlic mushrooms..Dh has never heard of giving garlic mushrooms as a starter or anyone else I know 😂I realise this is not a reason *Not to give them…but would they be better with Christmas Eve food? Dd wants a carpet picnic with crisps, dips, mini pork pies, mini sausage rolls, onion rings etc

You have them whenever you want them. I'm having some now!

Mrsjayy · 20/12/2022 17:42

We have ours on the dinner plate with the Turkey your family will thank you. 😊

Starlightstarbright1 · 20/12/2022 17:42

We have them on the dinner but also have yorkshire pudding and no beef..

Mummieslncorporated · 20/12/2022 17:42

They are standard to have with the dinner.

Garlic mushrooms are a fairly normal starter. I'm surprised he hasn't heard of that before. I don't think we'll be having a starter this year. Not unless one of the other people coming decides to bring one.

addler · 20/12/2022 17:43

You have them several times a week during the entire month of December.

OrigamiOwls · 20/12/2022 17:43

We have ours on the plate with the turkey.

IamSmarticus · 20/12/2022 17:43

Pigs in blankets traditionally go on your Christmas dinner, alongside the turkey, stuffing, potatoes, parsnips etc

senua · 20/12/2022 17:43

Pigs in blankets are served with the turkey etc (as in "turkey with all the trimmings"). Make twice as many as you need then people can snaffle them after as snacks.

Of course garlic mushrooms can be a starter (with toast?). It's as 80s as prawn cocktail.

RampantIvy · 20/12/2022 17:44

It's traditional to serve them with the turkey. TBH I prefer them to turkey Grin

fastcarsnarrowstreets · 20/12/2022 17:44

Prawn cocktail is the only acceptable starter for Christmas dinner. Pigs in blankets are a neutral (in the same way leopard-print is a neutral) - they'll go with anything.

Mrsjayy · 20/12/2022 17:44

I cook enough for munching on in the evening when I'm wine hungry !

God, yes! On the plate with the turkey! For the record, I do pigs in blankets, mini sausages without blankets, and streaky bacon slices rolled up on their own too.

And they make terrific left-overs cold the next day (if they last that long!).

Honestly, OP, you won't look back! Xmas Smile

RedemptionOrNothing · 20/12/2022 17:46

You should have them daily at around 3pm with a large Baileys. Failing that buy a smaller turkey and serve with Christmas dinner.

Hobbesmanc · 20/12/2022 17:48

We do our piggies in a big tray with the stuffing balls/stuffing slab plus some whole shallots which caramelise beautifully

These go in when the meat comes out and then are served on the same big platter. Everyone loves these bits and they fry up beautifully

Never had a starter on Christmas Day. Same as I wouldn't have one with a Sunday roast but I think if we did a cold seafood one would work

Breaded mushrooms with garlic Mayo seem very seventies. You deffo don't need a hot fried starter. Think of the timings and oven space.

cyclamenqueen · 20/12/2022 17:48

Pigs in blankets with the turkey , just like stuffing and bread sauce . We also eat them as snacks ! we always have smoked salmon on brown bread spread thinly with cream cheese as a starter but we tend to have it as a mobile starter with bubbly rather than set down . My FIL always makes them with the dc assisting !

KatherineJaneway · 20/12/2022 17:48

We have them on the main food plate. We don't have a large table so dish up in the kitchen for each person.

Never had / have a starter. The main meal is enough for us.

dementedpixie · 20/12/2022 17:49

We have homemade soup as a starter
We make our own pigs in blankets using chipolatas and streaky bacon. They are served with the turkey. Also have Yorkshire puddings

GCITC · 20/12/2022 17:49

They belong on every meal in December, and as snacks in between.

edwinbear · 20/12/2022 17:51

Pigs in blankets on the main plate with the turkey - it's the best bit of Christmas lunch! Smoked salmon as starter in our house, if we have one at all.

ShoveAHollySprigUpYourBum · 20/12/2022 17:53

I've never had them. Always cook a proper ham instead.

senua · 20/12/2022 17:54

Confused What do you mean instead? Don't you mean as well?

OnlyFannys · 20/12/2022 17:55

You have them all.day every day.

Feellikeivebeenfoodshoppingfordays · 20/12/2022 17:55

We’re having smoked salmon for breakfast, so wouldn’t have it immediately before the dinner.
I’ll leave a starter then and add the piggies to the Turkey plate 😋

I also don't understand instead😯

ShoveAHollySprigUpYourBum · 20/12/2022 17:56

Nah. they don't really appeal to me. One of my stuffings contains sausage meat so I feel like sausage stuffing plus a ham plus these pigs in blankets would be overkill.
