When to have pigs in blankets?

I didn’t grow up eating these at Christmas, Dh did and Dd now likes them..and the dog 😁Last year, I did them sort of before Christmas dinner as little snacks, I’ve since read that people have them *With Christmas dinner? Is it on the same plate as Turkey, potatoes etc?
Also, do you have a starter? Growing up we had prawn cocktail (very 80’s?) and then my mum would do garlic mushrooms..Dh has never heard of giving garlic mushrooms as a starter or anyone else I know 😂I realise this is not a reason *Not to give them…but would they be better with Christmas Eve food? Dd wants a carpet picnic with crisps, dips, mini pork pies, mini sausage rolls, onion rings etc

As well as with the main meal, fried up with leftover roast potatoes for Boxing Day breakfast.

If you're not familiar with the concept of leftover pigs in blankets, or roast potatoes, you didn't make enough the first time round.

Get the quantities right and there's no need to cook again for about 2/3 days after Christmas Day.

I am from Scandinavia so a different Christmas meal on Christmas Eve there with ham , boiled potatoes , veg casseroles etc I’m not a fan of . I love the Finnish fishy starter things but don’t care for the main . I love love the British traditional Turkey with all its trimmings we have the pigs in blankets with the Turkey and roast potatoes etc. we always have a seafood first course like the salmon mousse parcels etc supermarkets do . On Christmas Eve we always do Christmas party food you can buy and kids get one present as a nod to Finnish Christmas.

I havent rtft but you should eat pigs in blankets at any available moment hope that helps.

IntentionalError · 20/12/2022 20:17

I always have PIBs for breakfast. And then for lunch, then for afternoon tea. And, of course, they are great for dinner, too. Not forgetting as a late night snack with a beer.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 20/12/2022 22:47

We have them with dinner, but to me they'll always be school dinner food. I like them, but not as much as some others seem to!

RampantIvy · 20/12/2022 23:20

School dinner food!
We never got pigs in blankets at school.

5foot5 · 20/12/2022 23:36

Of course they go on the plate with the turkey!

We don't have a big starter. Just blinis and caviar. DHs family also like tomato juice for a starterbut DD and I wouldn't touch that with a barge pole, it's just all shades of wrong.

I like OP's DD's idea for a carpet buffet on Christmas Eve

I'm going against the grain here; I don't like PIB. Bacon and sausages separately yes, bacon encased sausage no thankyou.

Me neither 🤢

I have never understood our British I session with pork at Christmas. Pork on pork on pork. Pigs in blankets, pork stuffing, bacon on top of the sprouts, bacon on top of the Turkey, my husbands family does a whole plate full of bacon as well, we have Turkey, but I know many others who have ham.

Why so much pork in one sitting?

AmazonPrim · 20/12/2022 23:51

*obsession

lurkinglittleladybug · 21/12/2022 01:02

You’re being very unreasonable… Christmas dinner has to have pigs in blankets … it’s non negotiable 😋

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/12/2022 01:04

My family don’t have these either - I’m not sure why!

i do know they are traditional with the turkey though.

endlesscraziness · 21/12/2022 01:14

Every day they're available 🤣

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/12/2022 01:15

Your dd sounds so sweet! I think that's how I'd do dinner! How fun! Perfect way to take away the stress!😊

ThinWomansBrain · 21/12/2022 01:37

starter for Christmas meal - isn't that the constant stream of chocolate from around midday?

NoDairyNoProblem · 21/12/2022 01:40

I love a pig in a blanket and they have been a part of my Christmas dinner for as long as I can remember.

We don’t do a traditional starter, we have canapés and cranberry gin fizz as we exchange gifts around 2pm then main meal and dessert at 5pm and finally cheeseboard, Christmas cake and mince pies at 9pm.

Dinner- Turkey, ham, pigs in blankets, stuffing, roast potatoes, sautéed sprouts, red cabbage, roasted carrots and parsnips plus gravy. Yum!!!

Because it tastes delicious 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I love that on this very thread a poster, who might very well be me has made the funniest comment of the year, if not in the whole history of mn, and not a single poster has even noticed

I think it says a lot about our collective relationship with pork

You forgot that the pork-infused main meal is followed by a buffet of gammon, pork pie, sausage rolls, bacon&egg flan, scotch eggs, pâté, ham sandwiches ...

We have so many wonderful pork products in this country, we should celebrate them more.

Wow! Neither did I.

Pigs in blankets with the turkey dinner. And with a Christmas Eve feast! And lots extra to have as leftovers the next day. They’re delicious!
ive never had or heard of garlic mushrooms as a starter for xmas day dinner, but my parents always used to do a prawn cocktail. I don’t do a starter as it’ll fill me up too much to enjoy a huge roast! But of course, do whatever you and your family would like to do 😊
