Can you get pregnant with one blocked tube

96 replies

toastonjam · 19/12/2022 21:20

I have one blocked tube with adhesions and one healthy, clear tube.

My ovaries were also stuck to my uterus with adhesions but they have been surgically 'unstuck'

Am I still able to get pregnant naturally? My surgeon seems optimistic but I'm terrified. I seem to be having endless problems 😭

Surgeon doesn't know why I had adhesions as it wasn't endometriosis.

Please can someone help me I'm really worried

I was told after laparoscopy and dye squirted through that both tubes were blocked, only a small amount of dye went through one tube, lots of adhesions etc. Was told we would need IVF ( this was twenty years ago). Got pregnant naturally the month after the lap and dye. Had ds1, was then pregnant 9 months later after thinking it would take ages to conceive ! So have 18 months between Ds1 and 2. Ds3 and dd were then unplanned ! So yes it is possible. I hope it all works out for you.

@Whatafielddayfortheheat

It's always been at the back of my mind since finding out about the tubal issue but I've never had any real reason to suspect I had it. If I had it I'd have got it way over 10 years ago so it does feel unlikely. Can it just go on its own though? X

@Babyroobs

Thank you so much xx

My Mum had one blocked tube, she ended up having a multiple birth wich resulted in me and my 2 sisters. Good luck

Whatafielddayfortheheat · 19/12/2022 21:58

Apparently it can go on its own but it takes a long time for the body to fight it, and in the meantime this kind of damage is done. I'm not saying you had it, you'll probably never know, I won't know if I did either. But there is hope. After my ectopic, I still kept that dodgy tube in and I got pregnant twice from the good side, both within a few months of trying. Even though they told me I'd need IVF (had been trying for over 2 years even before the ectopic but that's another story!)

I've got one ovary and one tube and have two lovely children, no problems getting pregnant at all.

Nottodaty · 19/12/2022 22:02

@toastonjam the only reason I know was I was being treated for endometriosis & had a swab taken - otherwise I wouldn’t have known!

Whatafielddayfortheheat · 19/12/2022 22:04

@leccybill I'm sorry 💐

toastonjam · 19/12/2022 22:04

@Nottodaty

My swabs and biopsies all came back negative for any infections 😕 it's so confusing! X

Fanblinkingtastic · 19/12/2022 22:11

Yes - severe pelvic inflammatory disease in my teens and early 20s - bad scarring in both Fallopian tubes. Was told I would NEVER conceive naturally.

I have 2 children - both naturally conceived and one of them was conceived about 2 years after being told this.

Nottodaty · 19/12/2022 22:14

@toastonjam sorry meant to say all swabs since have been negative. The only reason I know was the swab taken at the time.

ThirtyThreeTrees · 19/12/2022 22:15

If it's just blocked as opposed to damaged, there's a procedure they can do to unblock it. I can remember the name of it unfortunately. It's the one they do after the HyCoSy test &I understand it has a reasonable success rate.

IAmAlreadyRegrettingMyGreyColourScheme · 19/12/2022 22:24

May have been an infection of some sort but now that it's resolved you'll likely never know.
I remember turning the same questions around in my head many years ago.
It could also have been a cyst or anything that caused the scarring.
Good luck to you, from experience this shouldn't stop you getting pregnant but it may take a little longer.

toastonjam · 19/12/2022 22:30

@Fanblinkingtastic

Wow 😱 congratulations!!

Did you have symptoms of PID if you don't mind me asking? X

@IAmAlreadyRegrettingMyGreyColourScheme

Thank you - my head is spinning trying to think of possibilities. I was so sure it would be endo!

Really praying for a positive outcome xx

@ThirtyThreeTrees

I think it's damaged too - my surgeon said for him to even attempt to repair it it wasn't worth the risk of ectopic pregnancy unfortunately x

OP posts:
ThirtyThreeTrees · 19/12/2022 22:53

Sorry to hear it's too damaged. Did you ever have a badly infected appendix,that can cause it too? You might never know.

toastonjam · 19/12/2022 22:54

@ThirtyThreeTrees

No :( the only thing I can think of that I had was impertigo when I was younger but that's obviously a skin infection type thing x

I got pregnant with only one tube!

Appleblum · 20/12/2022 01:09

Yes. I have 2 friends who had 1 tube cut off and they both went on to have children after 6 months of TTC. One even ended up with twins.

Good luck!

toastonjam · 20/12/2022 01:12

Thank you!
Does it make a difference that I still have both tubes though? I'm worried because I've got one blocked it will somehow effect the other. Or am I being stupid.. x

OlympicProcrastinator · 20/12/2022 01:24

I had two children after losing one to an ectopic.
My second pregnancy occurred while I was taking the depo shot and I was nearly 40. Completely shocked but yeah, one time was all it took.

toastonjam · 20/12/2022 09:35

@OlympicProcrastinator

Thank you!
I am still concerned about ectopic pregnancy as I still have the blocked tube x

OlympicProcrastinator · 20/12/2022 10:21

toastonjam The early pregnancy unit should give you an early scan to check the pregnancy isn’t ectopic as you are at risk. They did for me. I also knew immediately as I experienced unexplained bleeding and pain from the outset.
