To train my cat to use the human toilet?

Love having a cat, not so much the litter box.

Came across these kitty potty training kits on amazon… I’m tempted to buy it, but not sure if it’s actually going to work or just be a waste of money…

Anyone successfully potty trained their cat? If so how long did it take?

Please don't do this as cat poo is very toxic and our sewage system isn't designed to treat cat poo, only human poo.

Ew, no. Don't.

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 18/12/2022 02:14

I considered this very product myself when we got kittens but found enough info as per the links above to convince me not to do it.

if I had the money and space I would definitely get one if those electric self-emptying cat litter systems though!

Don't flush cat waste down the loo!!!! Why would you do that?! Where do you think it goes!

ThreeLittleDots · 18/12/2022 08:52

It's fine if they're an indoor cat / have an enclosure / don't go out hunting as they are very unlikely to have toxoplasmosis

Innercircleonly · 18/12/2022 09:11

No, it's really bad for your cats well being as they get older. When they are no longer able to jump up with ease they can get really stressed out. Also sewage.

unclebuck · 18/12/2022 09:13

DB got a rescue that had been trained this way. It regularly 'missed' and the whole of the bathroom stank. He litterbox trained him which was much better.

londonrach · 18/12/2022 09:19

I trained my chicken to go in a box so can't see why you can't toilet train a cat to use the toilet

Plump82 · 18/12/2022 09:20

No, it's cruel. Think of that cat when it's 18 years old and can barely walk never mind jump up and squat over a toilet.
Also as PP is not good for sewage.

GoAgainstNicki · 18/12/2022 09:22

That’s disgusting as fuck

CatNutsRoastingByAnOpenFire · 18/12/2022 09:53

Some years ago there were lots of the toilet training kits about. I thought it was a good idea until I realised that you need to be able to monitor what comes out in order to ensure your cat is in good health.

I also discovered that you can get long handled scoops (which are always out of stock when I remember to look).

Scoop into a dog poo bag, tie up and get it out of the house or use a litter locker, if they still call them that. It's a bag dispenser with a bin, can't explain it properly but it will be online somewhere.

LookingForTipsNotPuns · 18/12/2022 09:57

Please don't do this. The sewage issue notwithstanding, it can cause your cat to end up with all sorts of health issues. It's borderline cruelty.

If you don't want to clean up cat shit properly, dont have a fucking cat.

JackRosenberg · 18/12/2022 10:09

I have a cat that was trained this way when I adopted him. He never missed and I thought it was marvellous. I used to joke that if only I could train him to flush it would be perfect. However, after a year or so I began to notice that he would regularly yowl and seem anxious before going. I started to put a litter box on the floor next to the loo and without fail he picked it every time, and the yowling stopped. I think it was stressing him out and as far as I'm concerned he voted with his feet and he's had a box ever since.

He's a lot older now and has some health issues and, as others say, being able to see what is going on has been important. Invaluable in realizing before it became critical in fact.

SomethingOriginal2 · 18/12/2022 10:12

It's bad for their back, they have to use a wrong uncomfortable position to be able to balance and like others said. It will become painful for him as he gets older. You can get self cleaning litter trays.

bigdecisionstomake · 18/12/2022 10:20

OMG are there really people who flush cat poo down the toilet and into our drinking water system??? That's really not ok and as PP have said our sewerage system is not set up to remove Toxoplasmosis infection.

How can it be legal to sell products that encourage this practice?

Pumperthepumper · 18/12/2022 10:22

Wait, you scoop it out of the litter tray and flush it down the toilet? WTF? How did that even occur to you?

Hobbesmanc · 18/12/2022 10:25

I had know idea about cat poo and the loo. We always scoop and flush. Plus one of our boys will sometimes poo in the bath and that's deffo a toilet flush job. Need to rethink obviously although as human waste carries loads of viruses I'm not sure why cat poo is worse? Surely our sewers are full of rat shit and other nasties anyway?

Why? Why can’t you just scoop it out and bin it?

Pumperthepumper · 18/12/2022 10:30

Also, if you scoop the cat shit out does that also mean you’re flushing bits of cat litter too?

What else do you flush?

cuteasaduck · 18/12/2022 10:34

If no one else has suggested it, have a Google of Jackson Galaxy, cat behaviour expert. He explains why cats should not be trained to use a toilet.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 18/12/2022 10:36

We had a cat that used to wee on the toilet. Completely untrained and the cats had a litter box. Was quite a shock to wake up to 'someone' loudly doing a wee to work out it was the cat!
