To train my cat to use the human toilet?

Love having a cat, not so much the litter box.

Came across these kitty potty training kits on amazon… I’m tempted to buy it, but not sure if it’s actually going to work or just be a waste of money…

Anyone successfully potty trained their cat? If so how long did it take?

It's stressful for the cat because its natural behaviour is to bury its waste. Hence they like grubbing about in litter trays.

I had a cat that used to take a wee in the bathroom sink. Just a wee, never a poop.

Where you brush your teeth and wash your hands 🤢

Tampons arent animal waste (humans are animals), I wouldnt see any difference between animal waste to human waste.

Tampons/wipes and pads are plasticky and laminated so thats obvious it doesnt go down the toilet, its not comparable.

So what was the flushable stuff you bought made from?

I have no idea, Im going back over 20 years now

Plus the cats used to change their minds from time to time about what they liked and what they didnt. So sometimes I would use litter that could be flushed, other times it couldnt.

From memory there were different types, I didnt always like what they liked either so it was an ongong changing thing.

For those who have missed the (many) pp, here is the explanation again:

You should not flush cat feces down the toilet. Studies are showing that toxoplasmosis, a parasite found in cat feces, has infected marine mammals and otters. Toxoplasmosis cannot be destroyed by sewage treatment, and therefore escapes into our waterways, where crabs and starfish will feed on it, thus jeopardizing the health of other marine mammals who feed on the crabs and starfish. Toxoplasmosis can cause brain damage and death in sea otters. Most (if not all) litter manufacturers warn on their packaging not to flush feces or litter down the toilet, and that is the reason.

Just a quick google shows lots of flushable types still on the market, and lots of reviews saying it flushes well. So clearly a lot of people flushing cat poo down the toilet.

But there's no excuse to keep doing it once you know better. Doing something because you genuinely don't know it's wrong is different to doing something because you CBA to change your habits.

The litter we buy is flushable but I'd never dream of flushing it down the toilet - it gets bagged up and put in the outside bin.

ExtraJalapenos · 18/12/2022 15:16

Its a bit big but I used the covered curver litter tray. I use the catsan smart packs for actual litter.

For the ultimate lazy person it's the best thing. No smell, clean, and happy cats. There's cheaper versions but you'll get the drift.

Are you trying to be antagonistic and hostile?

I didnt say I didnt know what it was made from then, it was 20 years ago, I used to get through lots of different brands at different times according to the cats' whims

I therefore cannot remember what I used at what point or what it was made of. All I know is that if it advertised it as flushable then I flushed it.

Sorry about that but you're going to have to manage it.

No: my point is, if you knew not to flush plastic down the toilet then you should have known not to flush cat litter down the toilet. Doubly so if you didn’t even know what it was made from.

wiltingflower · 18/12/2022 15:41

At first I thought this was about the films meet parents and meet the fockers- similar idea there, the cat did learn to in the end

HuntingoftheSnark · 18/12/2022 15:47

Didn't James Bowen's street cat named Bob teach itself to use his toilet? I recall reading that and wondering if it was true. A bit surprised reading this thread though - putting the contents of my cat's litter tray in the toilet has never occurred to me but I suppose there's logic to it. In a way.

KettrickenSmiled · 18/12/2022 15:57

Because I was a chav who didn't own a 2nd loo, let alone an en-suite, I trained my ex to use the catlitter box. YABNU.

lurkinglittleladybug · 18/12/2022 17:01

Interesting to see comments about cats that taught themselves to use the toilet … I wonder if they watch their servant humans and copy 🤣

Now does that apply in the UK because that is a US site?

Does this mean that worms and parasites can get into our drinking water? 😱

Oh no,please don't do it. Cats like to hide their poops, it's instinct. Plus, once your cat gets older, might find it hard to jump on the toilet. Our cats often need to go when we go, I can't imagine waiting in the queue because cat is sitting on the throne right now 😂

thelobsterquadrille · 19/12/2022 11:33

@lurkinglittleladybug - yes. That's why only human waste and toilet paper should go down the toilet.

I had a cat that used to take a wee in the bathroom sink. Just a wee, never a poop.

My DM cat did that. She was very precise in her aiming as well - straight down the plughole.

Cats aren't stupid, they know what we use toilets for, so in their mind this is close enough. My cat used to shit in the bath if she decided the litter trays weren't up to her standards (we had two boy cats as well and she objected to their use of the trays) - I always thought it was better than her doing it somewhere carpeted.

dampthursday · 19/12/2022 12:00

Mildly amused by all of the comments suggesting it’s disgusting to flush cat poo down the toilet or common sense to realise that you can’t. It’s all just poo, isn’t it? Smelly, germ-filled poo from things that eat meat, so I can see why people assume it’s fine unless told otherwise.

Having seen the disgusting state that some public loos are left in and having used the long drop toilets at Glastonbury it’s amazing that cats are the unhygienic ones.

My cat did it too, once. The reason was that he was locked out of the room with litter box (for 2 hours) and I fell asleep. Since then we have two litter boxes. I will never forget how peacefully he slept on the bed, while his poop was in the plughole😂 I was glad too that it wasn't somewhere else. They're clean and smart.

That's weird and probably unsanitary

Just to counteract that view - one of the boy cats got locked in our bedroom while we were in work once. Could have done it on the carpet, but nope, he chose the sodding duvet.

Got home, realised what had happened, went straight back out to Asda to buy a new duvet.

He was lovely, but less bright than most cats. Big teddy bear of a cat, still miss him.
