To think we wouldn’t be having as many strikes if we weee under Labour government?

I find all these strikes we are having in our country quite worrying. Especially the NHS nurse and paramedic strikes. I support them fully and think they deserve a fair wage…

But can’t help but think there wouldn’t be all these strikes or at least if there were they would be resolved quicker and therefore fewer strikes if we were under Labour government right now?

Wales can only spend what the Govt gives them, they have no means to raise funds for any extra pay rise, unlike Scotland or England so of course they have strikes.

Aren't our nurses, rail and ambulance staff also on strike?

Starmer would talk pay to the nurses, pausing all strike action, seems a no brainer unless you want a strike?

Growing calls on Tory back benches (& media) to reopen pay talks, i assume their constituents aren't as right wing as some on MN.

I predict Sunak will be forced into a U turn before Xmas & will refer back to pay review body and or talks on pay.

Clavinova · 17/12/2022 13:11

Nurses have said they will call off the strike IF Govt will talk about pay... just talk..

RCN general secretary Pat Cullen claimed two or three times on Thursday night's Question Time that the starting salary for a newly qualified nurse in central London was £27,000 - it's £32,466 (inclusive of Higher Cost Area Supplement). Not much point talking about pay with someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.

I reckon he could,,,,

How?

The NHS is a massive money pit, there are far too many people working there doing nothing of value, there is no organisation at all, too many different departments, computer systems, etc etc. The pensions are ridiculous and are actually paid for by everyone else, not by the NHS workers, whatever they say. If it's paid for by themselves out of their wages which are paid for by everyone else, that is no different to it being paid for by everyone else directly.

I would reorganise the NHS from top to bottom. Scorched earth policy. Literally rip it up and start again and create a modern health service, instead of the one we have at present which is basically a 1940s health service with some very superficial bells and whistles to make it seem modern.

Welsh rail staff aren't on strike. TfW have agreed a deal with all four unions. Network Rail staff employed in Wales are on strike but they're employed by the UK government.

I'd have thought the reason is obvious, it stops the strikes!

JassyRadlett · 17/12/2022 13:30

A Labour government wouldn't have had a Brexit referendum and, even if they had, wouldn't have had their Brexit negotiations dictated by the most extreme free marketeers. So we wouldn't be facing up to the hit to public finances that comes from a permanent 5% reduction in GDP.

Could Keir Starmer fix the issues tomorrow if he won power? No. The Tories have made such a total mess that it will take years and years to fix the impact of underinvestment and low pay that is so fuelling our problems now.

How will you treat existing patients and new ones whilst you rip the NHS up?

I'm interested to know as you obviously have extensive experience in the NHS, at Trust, management and frontline to make such an assertion that "too many people do nothing of worth"

I also would like to know your experience of rolling out replacement IT systems, the issues these cause, how you would run new and existing IT systems along side each other, how you would cut over without data loss or disruption and most importantly the costs involved.

HRTQueen · 17/12/2022 13:32

there certainly would be more compromises

and Labour can not fix wrong doings over night so yes likely to still be strikes but not as many

Wales can only spend what the Govt gives them

They can choose what to spend the funding on.

From the article in my link -
Asked if he [Starmer] thought the Welsh Government was right to give a smaller increase to the NHS this year in Wales than the NHS in England is receiving...

dolor · 17/12/2022 13:56

Hahahaha

Labour are tories wearing red. It wouldn't be any better. Maybe if we'd have been allowed Corbyn it would be better, but be was purposely destroyed. Don't be so naive.

Boomboom22 · 17/12/2022 15:23

Just to note public sector pensions are not paid from a pension pot although a nominal figure of a pot is used on statements, they are calculated on career average and paid from general taxation, as are teachers.
If pay had not been so eroded over the years we would not be here. But the pensions point is relevant to why rishi doesn't want to negotiate.

Yes I think would be the case. Though the Tories will then say 'what about the winter of discontent in 1979'.

Just what I was going to say. This is nothing compared to then (yet)
The Unions ran the Labour Party and their demands were insatiable.
It didn't end well for British manufacturing and heavy industry.
Unfortunately Union Members have not been well served by their Unions.

Though to be honest when I was reading the word salad job for over 100k I have to wonder how much could be saved from the NHS if someone took some pruning sheers to it and had a serious look at the accounting (Time is spent adding up money owed by other areas which is then not claimed back or adjusted, and the sheer number of jobs which seem to have very little benefit to patients)

Tontostitis · 17/12/2022 19:51

I sort of agree, a large part of this round of strike action is an attempt to bring down the Gov. That wouldn't happen in the short term with a Labour Gov but as Sir Kier says the demands are unreasonable and no government, Labour, Conservative or Coalition has a magic money tree. After two years of a pandemic with rising inflation and recession looming any Gov giving even half way decent payrises linked to inflation will find itself in trouble in the long run.l and will have to say no. Will strikes be back with a Labour Gov?
