They moved house this year and it’s absolutely freezing we visited this week and we all sat in one room with our coats and the log fire on. Their house only hits 16 and the central heating is rubbish. I really can’t bare the thought of spending the whole day there.

We are in a very small but (warm) new build so we can’t host that many people otherwise I would offer.

AIBU? Or am I just going to have to suck it up? I don’t do well with being cold at all.

I'd wear layers and not stay as long as you say you are planning to. Go for the meal and a bit longer and then leave. That's got to be better than you not going at all?

spidereggs · 17/12/2022 21:18

I would be more interested in why it was so cold with a log fire and 12 people.

I say that as someone who has had it minus 16 this week, with just me and toddlers, and a log fire. Nobody is cold

I think just face it and dress as best you can to stay comfortable. They're doing their best I'm sure Would they appreciate a gift of heated blankets/oodie or an electric radiator or would they be offended? If there's 12 of you and the cookers probably going to be on for a bit of the day at least, it might not be as chilly as you think . Get stuck into the mulled wine nice and early, dress cosy and make the best of it! Good luck and come back to tell us how it went!!

Agree with the base layers suggestions too btw. I'd go merino base layer (if you tolerate wool ok), another fine merino sweater, merino leggings, jeans and a big hoodie.

Thermal layers, thermal socks and good hat and gloves. Take blanket to go over knees and hot water bottle. Seriously I didn't this when family member had freezing house

HamBone · 17/12/2022 21:58

@Moon22 Mulled wine ine is a brilliant idea, I've had it many times at Christmas markets to stave off the chill!

OP, if they don't generally make it, bring all the ingredients with you and state that you want to make it for everyone. That way, you can hang around by the cooker making it (and staying warm), then enjoy the inner glow when you drink it.

Sounds like my inlaws.
I go and suck it up every other year.

however it doesn’t look like it will be anywhere near as cold for Christmas as it has been this past week.
