To not want to go to parents in laws for Boxing Day?

They moved house this year and it’s absolutely freezing we visited this week and we all sat in one room with our coats and the log fire on. Their house only hits 16 and the central heating is rubbish. I really can’t bare the thought of spending the whole day there.

We are in a very small but (warm) new build so we can’t host that many people otherwise I would offer.

AIBU? Or am I just going to have to suck it up? I don’t do well with being cold at all.

How cold can it be with 12 people! Either way your husband needs to go.

itwas · 16/12/2022 22:14

Don’t be such a princess. You suck it up and graciously attend with thanks, because they’re family and that’s what grown ups do

underneaththeash · 16/12/2022 22:16

Put a thermal vest on. You’ll be fine.

Mirabai · 16/12/2022 22:19

Sheepskin boots, wool tights, thermal vest, fleece jacket over whatever you’re wearing. I would also take a hot water bottle.🤓

Keeps me warm at my aunt’s house.

toobusytothink · 16/12/2022 22:20

You sound a bit humbug about the whole thing. Boxing Day is the best day. As you said - a 2nd Christmas. And it’s family. So get over it and go with a positive attitude. Otherwise it will be really obvious you don’t want to be there. Layer up and get in front of that fire and enjoy

Essexexile · 16/12/2022 22:26

I always find my mums house cold, we joke it’s Baltic but she would be so offended if we didn’t stay overnight that we suck it up. Wear layers and put up with it, it’s one day.

Awrite · 16/12/2022 21:21

I think I would agree to go but feign illness on the day. I'd meekly wave everyone off telling them to have a great time and not to worry about me.

It never ceases to disappoint me that so many on MN espouse this kind of miserable, pass-agg behaviour.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 16/12/2022 22:28

Get some nice warm base layer clothes! Decathlon do good ones quite cheaply

Kidsaregrim · 16/12/2022 22:31

Get an electric oodie or fleece!

justasking111 · 16/12/2022 22:32

£25 a day in energy costs and they're still cold. Think their son should intervene and find out what is going on with their energy. £750 a month, it sounds wrong @Isitt2023yet

zurala · 16/12/2022 22:33

All these posts saying to wear six layers, buy heated clothing, sir with a hot water bottle.
How fucking miserable.
YANBU op, I refuse to live like that, I hate being cold and I hate being like the Michelin man. If a jumper and jeans isn't enough then the house is too cold to be in.
Can you offer them some money to put the heating on more? Do they know how cold their house feels? Some people are so used to being freezing they don't realise how uncomfortable it is for others.
I had to stop visiting a friend because her house was so cold my teeth would be chattering. She now puts the heating on if I'm going round so I'm not freezing.

But it’s one day, it’s her dp’s parents and they can go home & warm up at the end of their day.

Bien22 · 16/12/2022 23:11

Get some base layers! Really works, maybe not the most attractive but at least you will be warmer.

Nope. One day of being miserably cold in unacceptable temperatures is one day too many. It's inhospitable not to have your home a normal temperature for guests. Living in unhealthy temperatures is a choice people can't make for others.
By all means have your home unwelcomingly cold, but then don't be surprised if people don't feel welcome and prefer not to visit.

qpmz · 17/12/2022 09:14

OP - why is it cheeky to bring a heater? You need to own your feelings. You feel cold and are bringing a solution. You can say you're sensitive to the winter weather.

Mirabai · 17/12/2022 09:25

It’s cheeky to take a heater because you’d be using their power, but it’s fine to take a hot water bottle.

Define “normal”. Many MNers currently have their heating on at 18 and below due to the energy crisis - that’s far too cold for me - I currently have the heating in all day @ 21 degrees. But I live in flat so the charges are not extortionate. I wouldn’t be able to heat a 6 bed house to that degree.

I’ve often found U.K. houses too cold even before the energy crisis.

Some people feel the cold, others not at all - they set a temperature that works for them practically and financially.

LlynTegid · 17/12/2022 09:59

The weather will be less cold by December 26th. Arrange to go there for a shorter time than you would otherwise do were it a warm house.

Ohtheweatheroutsideistoocold · 17/12/2022 10:01

If there are 12 of you it will be a lot warmer anyway

This. Absolutely this.

Haventhadaneggsinceeaster · 17/12/2022 10:14

Why is it cold when there is a log fire? They can make rooms too hot so I find this bizarre!
Take a heater and give them money towards the electricity or buy some hardwood logs and take them with you for the fire and pop them on to keep up really hot.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 17/12/2022 10:16

it won’t be as cold as last week, the weathers warming up and will
most likely be over 10 degrees (depending on where you live). Also with 12 people in the house, oven on etc, it’ll soon warm up.

just wear a warmish outfit and you’ll be fine.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 17/12/2022 10:16

I would like that as I could layer up.

my in laws house is the opposite … it’s roasting (26+) and I can’t really sit there in shorts and a vest top.

caringcarer · 17/12/2022 10:19

I have the opposite problem OP. My MiL is old and has central heating on high but also gas heaters on in both lounge and dining room on full blast too. It is so hot I wear a T shirt and have to take jumper off. It makes me feel faint. I have to keep popping to back door to breathe. DH offers to walk the dog to get out but if I say I'll go too she says oh please stay and chat to me. So I have to stay in house.

HamBone · 17/12/2022 21:12

@caringcarer Wow, I'd find that worse than being cold, because there's absolutely nothing you can do! At least you can put a blanket over your knees if you're cold.

I'm currently sitting on my own sofa with a blanket over me as we're frugal with heating. I've also been known to put a hot water bottle on my lap.
