Arthur Christmas sexism

Christmascandycane · 15/12/2022 18:49

There are other examples of sexism in Arthur Christmas but one in particular that grates...

"They used to think it was impossible to teach women to read" - Grand Santa

Harmless you might think, but if you changed the word woman and replaced it with black people, people with learning disabilities, gay, Christians, Muslims etc
There would be so much backlash and rightly so.

So why is using women (sex) something we should accept as just harmless humour?
Sex is a protected characteristic and the remark is derogatory.

The female elf is clearly overqualified but is continuously fobbed off. The poor lass has to move heaven and earth to be noticed and is only given a role when they have no options left.

Santa's wife does nothing but wait on the family, she doesn't even get invited to join them in their game and when grand Santa does a speech thanking everyone, he thanks his wife for all the womenly things she does. He doesn't even pay notice to her efforts.

No. I'm not unreasonable and I'm not overthinking it.
This one is quite bad when you re watch it. This is what kids learn both directly and subliminal.

I've not seen it but what happens before or after? Is he agreeing with the sentiment or saying that's what people used to believe but now we know it's incorrect?

Christmascandycane · 15/12/2022 19:03

He uses it as an example to show that it is incorrect but there are plenty of other examples that could have been used other than breaking into the characteristics.
It's not like Grand santa is using a valid source.

I would be interested to know that if people feel any of the alternative terms I mentioned would be acceptable.

So he was saying it as an example of something that we now know to be false and absurd? How is that sexist?

EarringsandLipstick · 15/12/2022 19:11

I thought you were being humorous but suspect boy...

YAB utterly U

It's quite clear in the context that his views are archaic and not supported.

Santa's wife is absolutely treated badly by Santa, who's a bit of an arse - that's basically the whole point of the movie, his discovery & change, Arthur the hero, Bryony being brilliant.

It's hard to imagine you could have watched a kids' movie & taken this interpretation 🙄

EarringsandLipstick · 15/12/2022 19:11

suspect not* (not 'boy')

Hiphopopotamus · 15/12/2022 19:12

Have you watched the film?? The whole point is that Grandsanta is being ridiculous. And Mrs Claus is this incredibly capable woman out making treaties with Greenland and fighting off bears while her husband is basically a bumbling figurehead. I’m all for pointing out sexism but Arthur Christmas is not the hill to die on.

oatmilk4breakfast · 15/12/2022 19:13

Sorry you’re misinterpreting this

WandaWonder · 15/12/2022 19:15

To you do this to all movies? it does not mean what you are wanting it to mean

iklboo · 15/12/2022 19:15

No issues with floating elephants, zebras & a giant fecking flying sleigh?

All the male characters are portrayed as tools.

Grandsanta - archaic, out of touch
Santa - bumbling idiot
Steve - uptight, arrogant arsehole
Arthur - well meaning but an idgit

You need to take more water with it.

Claudia84 · 15/12/2022 19:19

Is this a joke thread?

This. Seems it went completely above your head OP…

aSofaNearYou · 15/12/2022 19:22

I disagree with your top two points. He was clearly pointing out the women reading thing was ridiculous. I agree people would be more offended if it was a racial thing, and I think that's a reflection of how much more seriously people take any mention of race vs any mention of sexism, but I don't think either should be taboo to point out.

The elf I think was more a comment on how it's the elves that do all the hard work, rather than it being specific to her being a girl.

I do agree on the Mrs Claus thing - she's one of those stereotypical wives that put up with their husband's shite and quietly keep everything afloat because he's a bit useless. But in it's defence - this does fit the traditional Mrs Claus "brand". But that sort of thing does generally annoy me.

YABU

I’m fed up of people trying to find something to be triggered and offended by.

That is 100% true and it’s pointing out the absurdity of it.

If you don’t like it then don’t watch it.

BrewandBiscuit · 15/12/2022 19:33

Oh dear OP. You need to unclench

Pascor · 15/12/2022 19:33

Another joyless ninny looking to cancel something they don't understand.

You have, like many not very bright people do, confused the object of the joke with the subject of the joke, and entirely misinterpreted the entire thing. Have a candy cane and be quiet, before you embarrass yourself further.

LateAF · 15/12/2022 19:56

That joke from grandsanta is one of the funniest jokes I’ve seen on a kids film - it is meant to be ridiculous, not an endorsement of grandsantas views.

ScreamInBlue · 15/12/2022 19:59

Good grief.

Dogsgottabone · 15/12/2022 20:03

YABU we watch it every year and have done since it was released.

A it's a brilliant film
B everything above
C I couldn't give two hoots anyway, it is charming and adorable and makes us all feel warm and fuzzy every Xmas eve.

Sparklesocks · 15/12/2022 20:16

It’s not meant to actually be disparaging towards women though, the joke is that grandsanta is clueless and out of touch and doesn’t know his arse from his elbow. You’d have to try incredibly hard to see otherwise.

Hankunamatata · 15/12/2022 20:23

I love Arthur Christmas. Its my fav movie. Lots of it's is satirical and shows no family is perfect, even santa

Hankunamatata · 15/12/2022 20:23

Now if you want to talk disney princess movies......

KrisAkabusi · 15/12/2022 20:30

FFS! He's putting forward a view that he now knows was wrong. It doesn't matter if it's about women, Muslims, gays or peanut butter, the whole point is that IT WAS WRONG.

Wiccan · 15/12/2022 20:30

Nope !

Arthur Christmas is my favourite Christmas film ever . Stop trying to cancel everything .

PieonaBarm · 15/12/2022 20:36

I love this film. "They breed elephants in the sewers" is said about Paris and I find it hilarious. Every time!

BiscuitLover3678 · 15/12/2022 20:38

You could argue that it’s the opposite of sexist as is pointing it out and dealing with it. Whereas it’s not doing anything for racism or homophobia.
