To be mad at ds for letting out a days heat so he can defrost his footballs?!

Just switched the heating off thinking it would last the evening. Just got up to go in the kitchen and the whole rest of the house is freezing.
ds has been outside with the back door open to get his got footballs cos they are frozen and need to cone inside to defrost!

I wouldn't be 'starting a mumsnet thread' annoyed about this Confused

ApolloandDaphne · 15/12/2022 18:48

Well it's a bit annoying but if you explain to him why it was a bad idea, and as long as he doesn't do it again, it is just one days worth of heat. Pop your heating back on for an hour and get some heat back in the house.

TheCurseOfBoris · 15/12/2022 18:48

Tell him that's one less present he'll get off Santa!

Dorsetdingle77 · 15/12/2022 18:55

No, don't be mad at him. Not this week.

Why not this week?

QueenAstrid · 15/12/2022 18:57

It’s the kind of annoying thing kids do all the time. Strange to start a thread about it

FunctionalSkills · 15/12/2022 18:58

Meh it's what kids do and how they learn. I wouldn't be mad.

ReluctantLondoners · 15/12/2022 19:00

I don't think this is that annoying of him tbh. He's probably right about the footballs. I found a red nose from red nose day in my car today and it has sort of disintegrated (I think due to the cold)

SleepingStandingUp · 15/12/2022 19:00

How long was the backdoor open that he's managed to leech the heat from the entire house? How did you not notice it was getting cold before yo u walked in the kitchen and decided the house was freezing? Sounds like you need to get some draft excludes for those drafty doors

emptythelitterbox · 15/12/2022 19:01

Depends on how old he is.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/12/2022 19:02

Also if you've just turned the heating off how is the whole house freezing? There's no way heat had escaped through one door that significantly to make the whole house so cold despite the heating running and you not noticing

BendingSpoons · 15/12/2022 19:04

Did he quickly open and close the door or leave it open? DH has drilled into our kids to shut the door behind them which is paying off now! If he left it open whilst outside, I'd be annoyed.

Veuvelily · 15/12/2022 19:06

He’s 15
i was in the lounge with the log burner on and door closed. I don’t know how long he was out there, maybe 10 minutes, the patio door was wide open.
I’m sick of this heating situation, so I’m obviously overreacting. Worried about money and watching the meter tick up

By 15, he should know that it's not ok to leave a door open for 10+ minutes when its' freezing cold outside.
Has he heard of climate change?
Does he get pocket money? Can he contribute towards the cost of his stupidity?

Contribute how much? So far this month my most expensive day, Post price cap, will be about £10 in gas. Even if we assume I only had it on 10 hours, that's a £1 an hour. If op puts the heating on for another he it'll warm theback up. You want to charge him £1 to teach him a lesson?

Octo5 · 15/12/2022 19:18

Annoying but hardly the end of the world is it.
Just remind him to close the door next time so he doesn’t let the heat out.

Completely missing the point but why would your meter be ticking up if you’ve got a log burner?

Athenen0ctua · 15/12/2022 19:23

By 15 (or 5 even) he should know you shut the door behind you if the heating is on!

Bogglebrain · 15/12/2022 19:24

Yeah I’d be annoyed and have a rant about it too! My DC know that during the winter to “shut the bloody door” and in summer to “leave the door open”.

PurpleButterflyWings · 15/12/2022 19:27
Confused
MouldyChristmasPud · 15/12/2022 19:34

I think venting on here is actually ideal, it will remind you that kids do stupid things.

Veuvelily · 15/12/2022 19:38

Meter was on £22, so I thought I’d switch it off and just heat one room with log burner.
he does have special needs so it’s hard to get mad at him, and it’s just me and him so venting on here

idonotmind · 15/12/2022 19:39

Sorry - he left the back door open for ten mins to defrost his balls? If so, YANBU.

Veuvelily · 15/12/2022 19:43

He was out playing with the ice
having a great time!

Octo5 · 15/12/2022 19:43

It’s absolutely fine to vent on here and it is so annoying!

But I definitely wouldn’t punish him for it.

I’d just call him a plonker and remind him to close the door behind him next time to not let the heat out.

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 15/12/2022 19:46

I'd be more than annoyed if my DC did this!
