To be depressed by flossing

Flossless · 14/12/2022 16:10

Hygenist visit yesterday, once again told my flossing is not good enough and warned of severe consequences of not doing it right. Once again a schedule set for what I should be doing and how. Today I'm depressed, I know that there is zero chance I can comply with these instructions, and it's not because I'm feckless. I could spend half-an-hour a day attempting to floss my teeth, and would still not have done half the job I'm being told to do, because it's impossible.

The problems are: -

  1. about a quarter of the gaps towards the back, I can't see what I'm doing, cannot consistently even find (by feeling my way) the gaps I'm supposed to be inserting floss into, cannot keep track of which ones I have and haven't done, if I manage to do anything at all, which I mostly don't.
  2. the majority of gaps in my mouth, the teeth are touching each other, it's very difficult and sometimes impossible to squeeze floss between the teeth, I have to apply huge force to get floss in, the times I manage it at all, and then it's so difficult to get the floss back out that if feels like I'm going to rip out my teeth and fillings, and the floss gets shredded on the way out
  3. as a consequence of 2, I have to wind new lengths of floss around my fingers several times during a session, and that's for a session in which I probably give up having got floss into fewer than half the gaps
  4. I cannot keep track of the gaps I've flossed by moving from one gap to the adjacent one, because of the need to wind a new bit of floss round my fingers after virtually every gap I do manage to floss.

I do use a water pick, which is 90% effective, but hygenist says it's not good enough.

Interdental brushes are not much use, I don't think, as they only replicate what the water pick does reasonably well. I think they only clean between teeth, they don't go down the sides of teeth, under the gum.

I've tried the little holders with floss on, the floss was the wrong kind, too thick to fit through gaps. If I could get it in, because the floss is round rather than flat, the surface area is too small to clean the teeth efficiently. They come with a toothpick at the opposite end whose only function seems to be to stab holes in my cheek or tongue when I'm using the flossing end.

When I complained about floss issues, a dentist suggested using interdental brushes, when I pointed out that I couldn't get the brush into some gaps and other gaps were so big the brushes didn't touch the sides, he explained in all seriousness that I should have several sizes of brushes and a personally customised wall chart map of to remind me which size to use for each of the circa 30 gaps between my teeth. Even if that is a thing that people do, and he said it was, I don't see how this works, as I can't see how I would reliably map chart instructions to actual gaps.

If I try to explain the issues, I just sound like a feckless person making excuses. Also, I tend not to remember the issues in detail, because they occurred months earlier, after my previous visit, after which I gave up and returned to only using water pick.

I've found some new floss holders, that use the best kind of floss for me, PTFE flat tape. I put the likelihood that these will produce satisfactory results at about 5%. No doubt they will work in some gaps, but not all. As I can't memorise a mental map of which of 30 gaps are worth even attemping to clean, I will spend inordinate amounts of time trying impossible gaps every day, before I give up on trying to use them.

I'm a dental hygienist and OP reading the other posts you have been given some fantastic advice.
Sometimes I despair at my profession, I always try to treat people how I would want to be treated and explain why you need to clean interdentally. Unfortunately gum issues has been related to other issues like diabetes, smoking, pregnancy and I recently watched a webinar concerning the menopause and gum disease. I ask my patients to do what they can when they can daily and personally I swear by an oral b electric toothbrush, the tepe easy picks and an interspace brush. I also like to prove people wrong, do your absolute best and if you are still spoken to badly discuss with the referring dentist why you don't feel comfortable with the hygienist's attitude.
I promise you there are some good ones around.

Does your dentist use all kinds of specialized floss paraphernalia when flossing your teeth?

I'm not aware that they use floss at all? I think they only use power tools and picks. What they use bears no relation to what they are telling me to use. I don't think they try to force anything through top of teeth, they always go in from the side. I don't know what they use to clean under the gum, but it's not floss, which is the only option I have, as far as I know.

The issue with getting floss in and out is not just the difficulty, it's the time. When the hygienist demonstrates flossing, on easy-to-access front teeth, it looks like you would spend five seconds on each gap, before effortlessly moving the same floss to the next gap. If you spend 10-15 seconds trying to force the floss in, 5 seconds flossing, and 10-15 seconds trying to get it out, then spend maybe 20 seconds replacing the shredded floss with a new length for the next gap, then have to work out where to go back to because you aren't just moving along one tooth from where you were, it's a different ball-game.

I’m confused, maybe it’s just the term dentist that I’m using when it would have been more accurate to say hygienist. Someone during your visit is not flossing your teeth?

I’ve never been to a dentist appointment where my teeth weren’t flossed the old fashioned way after the scaling and polishing with special tools. It’s usually done by the hygienist but my current dentist does both cleaning and the doctor bits so she’s flossing.

ok so if no one is flossing during the visit next time ask them to and then ask them for specific advice based on your mouth. I do agree a map and different size tools is over the top.

In the nicest possible way I gave up after the first few paragraphs as didn’t know you could say so much about flossing 😳

I’m weirdly invested now… it’s been a tough week so I think this is the top end of what my brain can handle!

I use interdental brushes and floss. I have four different sizes of brushes so that they do brush effectively, and use the largest possible for each gap. It really doesn't take long to get into a routine, I tend to go round with the biggest brush first and do the gaps that fits in and then go down through the sizes. I might do any one gap more than once, but I don't see how you can miss any out and even if you did then it would get done the next time.

It seemed a bit mind boggling to me at first that people actually did this EVERY DAY! But my gums were getting bad and some were coming up as 6s on my check up and three months of using TePes regularly got them down to zero.

I don't want to lose any teeth as I get older, like I have seen happen to friends, so it's worth it (I don't want to be like the Pam Ayres poem, "Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth")

I do exactly the same. No need to remember which colours go where, and certainly no need for a chart.
It’s not my favourite occupation, but if it means I keep my teeth, then it’s worth doing.

Mouth map - you colour between the teeth with the colour of the brush that fits

Uuurgh I only go to the dentist if there's an issue (I'm 47 and never had a filling) and I'd never go to the hygienist as I went a couple of times when I was young and my teeth were so sensitive afterwards it was horrid. Dentists and hygienists seem to be in league - the dentist always says to my mum (who goes very regularly) that she needs see the hygienist no matter what, I swear it just a money making thing between them.

SwedishEdith · 14/12/2022 19:08

I decided to go to a hygienist after missing the dentist after Covid. She expects me to use interdental brushes three times a day. "Keep them in your car. I'm always using them when I'm driving". I told her I use the train and work in an open plan office.

IcakethereforeIam · 14/12/2022 19:08

Thought this thread was going to be about Fortnite (start slow and practise until you can build up speed), but apparently not!

I've not rtff, has anyone mentioned using those plaque disclosure tablets. Maybe a couple of times a week, and halve the tablet to make them go further. Let you see where the trouble spots are and if there are any areas that don't need so much work.

Burgoo · 14/12/2022 19:12

I'm unsure what the issue is here. Accept that it'll never be perfect and do your best. Remember that these people (particularly hygienists) are there to make money, so they are bound to suggest a load of intervention that will make you have to go back to them.

Getting DEPRESSED over it is a bit OTT. Its not all that big a deal.

And yes, working in health you wouldn't imagine how few people actually brush twice a day let alone floss!

BrandNewBicep · 14/12/2022 19:12

How on earth can it take 25-30 mins to brush between your teeth? What are you doing? I've never timed myself, but reckon it takes a couple of minutes, if that. This was advised by my hygienist. I had terrible gums but managed to turn them around with daily flossing/TePe.

sanityisamyth · 14/12/2022 19:13

Flossing makes me feel sick so I don't do it. My teeth and gums seem fine ...

napody · 14/12/2022 19:15

ghjklo · 14/12/2022 16:28

have you tried those silicon interdental picks? the smallest ones? much easier and nicer to use than the floss, last longer and a more pleasant experience.

another thing that is also good for gumline and small spaces is the tufted long handled brush called an "interspace" one. Be careful not to be overly harsh when using it but it's great for difficult to reach spaces such as round the back of the upper back teeth. like this:
www.amazon.co.uk/WISDOM-5028763005457-Wisdom-InterSpace-Toothbrush/dp/B001CLWFWW

also I find if I do the flossing in the shower or bath I remember better.

finally for gums take vitamin c and also coenzyme q10 supplement. really good for your gum health.

Flossing in the SHOWER?! Genius!

Irridescantshimmmer · 14/12/2022 19:20

I just close my jaw on the flosser exerting just the right amount of pressure for the flosser to enter between my teeth and this works for me. I then jusy yank it out and start again with the next.

There is hardly any space between my teeth.

FuckOffPeroids · 14/12/2022 19:28

Try tepe easy picks in orange size. Better than brushes, bendy, no wire, will go under the guns to a degree. Rinse and reuse and keep using Waterpik after.

Doingmybest12 · 14/12/2022 19:32

I've upped the time I spend using the electric toothbrush to 4 minutes morning and night , this seems have had a better impact than 2 m morning and night and all the brushes. I guess I should do 4 mins and the brushes but I do struggle as it really wakes me up and then I can't get off to sleep, note to self to try harder again. I lost several teeth as no one told me how bad it honestly was in there.

Lasttraintolondon · 14/12/2022 19:37

Not to add to the challenge here but do try to get floss tape that's pfas free. Some of the amounts of pfas discovered in the coating have been amazingly high. A genuine health concern.

MotherofPearl · 14/12/2022 19:44

OP, I absolutely feel your pain. I'm sure you didn't intend your post to be funny but I found it very amusing, simply because I could relate to it all. I detest flossing (though I do it every day). Another thing I hate about flossing is that I always end up with the floss wound too tightly around my fingers and the circulation gets cut off.

antelopevalley · 14/12/2022 19:45

I have the same issue. After being told by loads of dentists I need to floss, a senior dental surgeon said my gums are fine so don't worry. Do you have any issue at all with gum disease or plaque?

MotherofPearl · 14/12/2022 19:46

As for the dentist suggesting a wall chart and multiple interdental brushes! Some of us have jobs and lives! Who has the time for dental wall charts?!

FearofQueefing · 14/12/2022 20:22

I just can't get on with flossing and interdents. I use a sonicare toothbrush and my oral hygiene has improved massively - hardly any plaque when I see the hygeniest...

I was told to brush against the side of each tooth 10 times, so insert, 10 times one side then times the other then move to the next tooth. I rinse the brush after every tooth and I’m always switching my sizes. I can’t imagine it taking two minutes! What are you doing?!

I absolutely hate it so I do probably faff around a bit. I’ll have to double check tonight if I include my actual tooth brushing thinking about it, I spend a good 3 mins on that.

Wakk · 14/12/2022 20:30

I rarely floss. I had no idea most people do!

greenacrylicpaint · 14/12/2022 20:32

my teeth are close together. I can't get floss through.
I use the smallest size of interdental brushes (those rubber ones with a curved handle) I dip those in toothpaste and give it a good go. nothing more I can do <shrugs>

my dentist is mostly happy with my teeth and gums.

megletthesecond · 14/12/2022 20:35

My teeth are crowded and I've never got the hang of tape. I use oral b essential floss, anything else is too chunky.
