To be depressed by flossing

Flossless · 14/12/2022 16:10

Hygenist visit yesterday, once again told my flossing is not good enough and warned of severe consequences of not doing it right. Once again a schedule set for what I should be doing and how. Today I'm depressed, I know that there is zero chance I can comply with these instructions, and it's not because I'm feckless. I could spend half-an-hour a day attempting to floss my teeth, and would still not have done half the job I'm being told to do, because it's impossible.

The problems are: -

  1. about a quarter of the gaps towards the back, I can't see what I'm doing, cannot consistently even find (by feeling my way) the gaps I'm supposed to be inserting floss into, cannot keep track of which ones I have and haven't done, if I manage to do anything at all, which I mostly don't.
  2. the majority of gaps in my mouth, the teeth are touching each other, it's very difficult and sometimes impossible to squeeze floss between the teeth, I have to apply huge force to get floss in, the times I manage it at all, and then it's so difficult to get the floss back out that if feels like I'm going to rip out my teeth and fillings, and the floss gets shredded on the way out
  3. as a consequence of 2, I have to wind new lengths of floss around my fingers several times during a session, and that's for a session in which I probably give up having got floss into fewer than half the gaps
  4. I cannot keep track of the gaps I've flossed by moving from one gap to the adjacent one, because of the need to wind a new bit of floss round my fingers after virtually every gap I do manage to floss.

I do use a water pick, which is 90% effective, but hygenist says it's not good enough.

Interdental brushes are not much use, I don't think, as they only replicate what the water pick does reasonably well. I think they only clean between teeth, they don't go down the sides of teeth, under the gum.

I've tried the little holders with floss on, the floss was the wrong kind, too thick to fit through gaps. If I could get it in, because the floss is round rather than flat, the surface area is too small to clean the teeth efficiently. They come with a toothpick at the opposite end whose only function seems to be to stab holes in my cheek or tongue when I'm using the flossing end.

When I complained about floss issues, a dentist suggested using interdental brushes, when I pointed out that I couldn't get the brush into some gaps and other gaps were so big the brushes didn't touch the sides, he explained in all seriousness that I should have several sizes of brushes and a personally customised wall chart map of to remind me which size to use for each of the circa 30 gaps between my teeth. Even if that is a thing that people do, and he said it was, I don't see how this works, as I can't see how I would reliably map chart instructions to actual gaps.

If I try to explain the issues, I just sound like a feckless person making excuses. Also, I tend not to remember the issues in detail, because they occurred months earlier, after my previous visit, after which I gave up and returned to only using water pick.

I've found some new floss holders, that use the best kind of floss for me, PTFE flat tape. I put the likelihood that these will produce satisfactory results at about 5%. No doubt they will work in some gaps, but not all. As I can't memorise a mental map of which of 30 gaps are worth even attemping to clean, I will spend inordinate amounts of time trying impossible gaps every day, before I give up on trying to use them.

'Oral B Glide' floss sticks - honestly, the same issues as you and this was a game changer. I sterilise the same one until it snaps and each one sometimes lasts a month. I rub the toothpaste all over my teeth before I use them too so I get the abrasion of the toothpaste right between my teeth.

Some of you have never flossed? Oof don’t envy anyone getting up close and personal with you! There is a very distinct smell about the non-flossed!

Hmm
Montague22 · 14/12/2022 17:14

That reminds me, just wetting the little brushes first helps with the tiny gaps.

onlymyOP · 14/12/2022 17:30

I have similar issues, so use a water flosser and floss pick at the end of the day as I have no patience for dental tape. Before the complaints start... recyclable floss picks are available.

DaisyLouB · 14/12/2022 17:30

My mum has trouble with flossing, always has but she’ll go to the hygienist every 4 months for a deep clean and that seems to keep all the plaque under control and she hasn’t lost any teeth so maybe just go and visit the hygienist more regularly as they can get into all the gaps and harder to get areas before the plaque sets in and causes damage to teeth and gums

I've never flossed 🤫

No dental work needed in my 36 years. I'm very lucky though that my teeth are well aligned.

I've tried a few times before but I find it hurts and makes my gums bleed.

Hate to break this to you but healthy gums don’t hurt or bleed when you floss.

OP:
I don’t floss every day (usually a couple of times a week) , but according to my dentist (who is not shy about pointing out my dental shortcomings) has no issues with my gums. They do not bleed when I do floss nor when she does.

with all that being said, yes you do sound a bit over the top with this. Yes overcrowded teeth can be challenging to floss but unless you have massively loose teeth you will not break or pull out a tooth just by removing floss. Does your dentist use all kinds of specialized floss paraphernalia when flossing your teeth? If not then it’s something you just need to practice at and improve your skill.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/12/2022 17:45

Try a water Flosser
I had bad gum disease before I used one and my teeth and gums are so much better

Flossless · 14/12/2022 17:48

I'm not aware that they use floss at all? I think they only use power tools and picks. What they use bears no relation to what they are telling me to use. I don't think they try to force anything through top of teeth, they always go in from the side. I don't know what they use to clean under the gum, but it's not floss, which is the only option I have, as far as I know.

The issue with getting floss in and out is not just the difficulty, it's the time. When the hygienist demonstrates flossing, on easy-to-access front teeth, it looks like you would spend five seconds on each gap, before effortlessly moving the same floss to the next gap. If you spend 10-15 seconds trying to force the floss in, 5 seconds flossing, and 10-15 seconds trying to get it out, then spend maybe 20 seconds replacing the shredded floss with a new length for the next gap, then have to work out where to go back to because you aren't just moving along one tooth from where you were, it's a different ball-game.

It takes me a good 25-30 mins to do my interdental brushing so I just prop up my phone and catch up on TV shows while I do it.

Those look similar to the ones I tried previously, though I don't think mine were Oral B. The round floss on those is definitely problematic for me. I hope the one I mentioned ordering earlier, that use flat tape, will be better.

You could always leave the piece of shredded floss in, get a new strip, put that in the next gap before you remove the shredded bit? So you have a marker

Isntitakward · 14/12/2022 18:00

I’m ready to be said I’m wrong and naive and whatever… I never complied with their flossing propaganda lol. My teeth are extremely tight. My face anatomy means I can access very far. I’m not going to stay there and struggle every evening, I have other things to do. I have a sonic toothbrush and a water floss. I hope it does the job because the hygienist said I’m fine. I’m not sticking anything in my mouth.

Isntitakward · 14/12/2022 18:01

I cannot access*
and my teeth I fine, although I do have 2 small fillings (I’m late 30s)

Candlemas · 14/12/2022 18:02

This is why we live our dentist.
He doesn't try to guilt trip us, doesn't rip us off, and doesn't suggest thousands of pounds of dental work we don't need.
To be honest, some hygienists wouldn't be happy even if you spent the whole day flossing.
I use a blue plastic bendy stick and it seems to do the job.

Winter2020 · 14/12/2022 18:10

Try using a good mouthwash regime instead.

drellie.com/

I didn't tell my dentist I was using a mouthwash regime but it's the only time they have said I havd done a good job etc with mu gums.

garlicandsapphires · 14/12/2022 18:13

Oh god this thread fills me with dread. I very rarely floss and I’m avoiding the dentist.
Its just so BORING

janeeyreair · 14/12/2022 18:13

@ghjklo how do you use that brush?

AugustSchumann · 14/12/2022 18:13

I've sort this out recently for myself OP.

I did it in stages, this is what helped:

I got a 5x magnification simplehuman mirror and printed out a blank chart. I mapped my teeth with interdentals (this was over several days it seemed like a daunting task). The magnification mirror was a gamechanger - I also stopped doing this in the bathroom - I do it at my standing dressing table.

To start off with I needed 6 different size interdentals - now the inflammation has gone (that I didn't even notice) down it I don't use the smaller sizes anymore (just use blue, yellow and green) + tepe picks for the back ones where I can't get an interdental brush in. Follow with dentex cross flosser. It takes way less time now I'm used to it and I don't feel clean without doing it. Also helped massively switching to doing it before brushing.

Hygenist suggested just using tepe picks for the small gaps (orange or blue) and only the green interdental for the biggest gaps to simplify it.

I wish I had done this years ago - maybe it would've saved me pain and a lot of money...

DH never flosses (gaps very very small) and only brushes once a day...zero filling and now mid-fifties. Sadly, I'm not like this at all...I really should've been taking interdentals/flossing much more seriously many years ago!

Ilikecakes · 14/12/2022 18:17

Total thread hijack so sorry OP, but can anyone recommend a good water flosser please?

Honestly shocked at your dentist or the PPs suggesting a detailed map, project plan or 25-30 minutes as a realistic solution, who on EARTH has the time?! 🙈

DailyMailReporterTellMeAllYourSecrets · 14/12/2022 18:20

Oh God, I hate it. I go home after my telling off with all good intentions. I do it once and then give it up again 😢 Trouble is, One of the 5 meds I take causes gum disease. The dentist has now referred me to the dental hospital, not looking forward to that.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 14/12/2022 18:22

Don’t you just keep track with your tongue? I rest my tongue on the tooth I’m on while I grab a fresh floss stick.

I have bad overcrowding too but the floss picks are easier to help angle the floss right and I kind of saw it back and forward gently (so I don’t cut into the gum) between the teeth until it gets all the way in. The more you do it the easier it gets.

Just be gentle with yourself and persist, it’ll get easier.

KatyClair · 14/12/2022 18:31

In the nicest possible way I gave up after the first few paragraphs as didn’t know you could say so much about flossing 😳

Circe32 · 14/12/2022 18:32

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but Oral B Essential Floss is great! I've had problems getting other floss and interdental picks between some of my teeth, but this one is fab - if you hold it taut, it will get between very close teeth. Wishing you all the best!

GardenIce · 14/12/2022 18:39

Have you tried politely telling your dentist to fuck off, life's too short for that shit.
