House cleaner - Do I mention this

Hello.

I recently decided to get a cleaner as I struggle to find the time and I'm incredibly OCD. I mean, when I clean I clean every single inch of the home, leave all the chrome taps, sink, everything chrome spotless. Anyway, decided to have a cleaner and she's left water stains all over the chrome taps and in the sink and hasn't cleaned the plug hole. Do I mention this or not get her back again?

Yes, if you aren't happy, tell her.

Lower your standards

ChefsSalad · 13/12/2022 17:34

There will always be teething problems, but do mention it. However, you may need to pay for more time.

I'm sorry to hear about your severe mental illness.

melj1213 · 13/12/2022 17:34

YABU to want to go nuclear and fire her before you've even mentioned it and given her chance to correct it next time.

You don't say how long it takes you to clean "properly" and how long you booked your cleaner for, which will also impact how long they spend on little tasks like this. Especially as a cleaner will often take longer to do tasks than you do on the first couple of cleans as they figure out where everything is, get used to your house, work out the best work flow etc ... So if it takes you 3hrs to clean the house then unless you booked her for 4hrs then she is not going to get everything done.

Additionally unless you left explicit instructions that this must be done then she may have prioritised a general good clean everywhere than focussing specifically on jobs like this and missing out a whole room (for example)

Pecanpie12 · 13/12/2022 17:36

I've told her to specifically concentrate on the bathrooms and kitchen. She had 3 hours to clean the house

Like someone else said lower your standards. Be specific about what you want and don't nit pick. I used to clean for a woman who asked me to clean her inside windows with surgical/white spirit. When I almost passed out one day standing on a ladder and refused to do it any more she looked amazed as if to say everyone has their windows cleaned this way - well no they don't !

TheChippendenSpook · 13/12/2022 17:39

Out of interest, how can you be OCD? You can have OCD but not be it.

BlackberrySky · 13/12/2022 17:39

You need to communicate if you want the arrangement to last. Just say, "could you please make sure to clean the water marks off the chrome areas". She isn't a mind reader.

Bouledeneige · 13/12/2022 17:39

I'm not sure that round bother me. But I recently got a new cleaner and she did ask me for a list of what I wanted doing and I do update her when I see her if there's something I'd particularly like her to do.

But as she's human she does do things like leave a cloth and cleaning fluid bottle out and not put away from time to time. To me that's just a mistake that you have to expect - no one's perfect.

Burgoo · 13/12/2022 17:39

Jesus they are practically spotless. Plus unless you plan on leaving the plug off, I don't see why you need to see that anyway. You need to lower expectations by a HUGE margin.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 13/12/2022 17:40

OP has unscrewed that plug to do that ! I would call that OTT

PearlclutchersInc · 13/12/2022 17:41

Mention it,you're entitled to as you're paying. However it's unlikely she'll ever do things to completely satisfy you (by the sounds of it).

cortisolqueen · 13/12/2022 17:42

That would annoy me OP, as far as I'm concerned, cleaning a sink includes the taps/plug hole.
But none of my cleaners seem to clean to that standard

Pecanpie12 · 13/12/2022 17:42

I understand majority aren't as clean as me, and I'm perfectly aware of that, but I had assumed that leaving water marks all over chrome taps etc is just general knowledge. You have cleaned something then left it covered in water again? Makes no sense to me personally. I've let her know.

This. Look at the gleam on that sink!

Merryoldgoat · 13/12/2022 17:45

I don’t think having OCD and a cleaner are compatible. My aunt has OCD and cleans all day. She has a cleaner for 12 hours per week and her house is spotless. She is never happy. There is always something to moan about.

olympicsrock · 13/12/2022 17:46

I don’t normally unscrew my plug when I clean. I shone what I can see. I do polish my chrome taps

MonkeyPuddle · 13/12/2022 17:48

But it is clean. It’s just a water mark.

leepinglizards · 13/12/2022 17:49

I don't think you have to lower your standards but I do think you should communicate what you expect.

marrymeadam · 13/12/2022 17:51

I took my plugs off to clean under them once. They look the same so thought they were no problem. My upstairs bathroom was fine. The downstairs loo when I did it made the plug hole leak maybe she doesn't want to risk breaking your property? I also like chrome looking shiny but I think 3 hours is not long to clean a house and make sure everything is polished

StickyCricket · 13/12/2022 17:53

I’ve come to accept that having a cleaner is better than not having a cleaner but nobody will ever clean to my standards.

I can’t stand it when people blithely say “I’m OCD” when what they really mean is that just have exacting standards for certain things.

It totally minimises what a distressing condition OCD is for those who are diagnosed with it, and how much it significantly interferes with their life.

KillerRobotCompetition · 13/12/2022 17:54

TheChippendenSpook · 13/12/2022 17:39

Out of interest, how can you be OCD? You can have OCD but not be it.

Stop nitpicking.
I have severe (medicated & having therapy) OCD.
I can say ‘I’m really OCD’ or ‘I have OCD’ when talking about myself.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/12/2022 17:55

That would annoy me too and i am in no way a zealous cleaner. I always unscrew the plug to clean round the rims of both bits. They get very manky.

Pecanpie12 · 13/12/2022 17:58

Yes, I do have OCD. things have to be a certain way in the house, a certain amount of 'clean' before I can go to bed. It's the way I am. I don't expect people to be like me as I have said prior. But leaving chrome clean (or at least I thought) was how you should leave it clean when it's been clean. Also, the plug hole is full of limescale that's just a weeks worth of build up and I clean it every week. God knows what everyone else's look like lol!
