To ask how anyone makes money on Vinted?

I've just started listing baby clothes on Vinted and I'm struggling to see how anyone makes any money? Items seem to be sold at roughly £1-2 each and sales seem to be slow.

Any tips? Shall I go back to eBay WH in I haven't used for years. I have so much baby stuff to shift and could really do with the extra cash ( have also sent tonnes to charity shops too!).

Sell in bundles
Write a detailed description
Take plenty of photos to cover all angles

SoupaDoupa · 12/12/2022 22:43

I've made loads on there by selling baby clothes and my own clothes. I sell the baby clothes generally for £1-£5 per item. I upload 5-10 items at a time (as much as I have time for really) and I find most of it goes quite quickly. A lot of people buy multiple items so purchase as a bundle. I also have the bundle discounts on so the more they buy the more they save. I sell my own clothes as well and have just made over £100 from selling a couple dresses and a bracelet.

A few tips - make sure your clothes are presented nicely. Well lit photos, multiple clear photos showing the tags if it's a higher end item. I also steam most of my items so they don't look like they've been shoved in a bag for months.

It's like online shopping really. People are attracted to nice looking things. Lay them out nicely as well. I've seen some horrific photos on there and wonder how people will ever make a sale. Also make sure your descriptions are really good.

I sell baby clothes for quite a reasonable price. But every little bit does add up!

Brands like Zara, Newbie, M&S, Next, H&M all sell well. If you're really struggling to sell perhaps people just aren't interested in what you're selling. Could be outdated styles, the clothing is worn too much, the prints aren't very nice, etc

We sold a LOT of playmobil last week. Over £600 in total. It depends what you’re selling.

BeautifulDragon · 12/12/2022 22:47

I sell kids items for £3-£5 a piece, more for shoes and coats etc.

They are good HS brands (Zara, Next, Boden, Adidas, Nike etc) and sell quickly.

Easily adds up and anything is more than giving them away for free, which is what I used to do.

Juicylychee · 12/12/2022 22:48

I agree, also, you don’t have to pay to post it the way you did with eBay!

allthecrooksandnannies · 12/12/2022 22:48

I think it’s a little and often thing

AriettyHomily · 12/12/2022 22:51

Be prepared to sell cheap, offer discounts in bundles, sell clothing appropriate to the season.

BabyMomma2021 · 12/12/2022 22:52

I've made about £60 in the last week selling some of my husbands old things (with his permission!)

I priced competitively, took clear pictures and tried to make the items look nice.

It was my first time using vinted and found it so much easier than eBay. Especially as I can avoid going to the PO (my local has closed) and use local parcel drop off points instead.

I think you do have to remember that people want a deal and not to sound rude, but we often place more value on our items than others so you might not get what you think something is worth!

Sorry to post hijack, but do you have any top tips for Playmobil? I have at 12 ikea Kallax boxes full of the stuff but it's so ouch I don't know where to start.

Alanisadick · 12/12/2022 23:17

I’ve just started selling on there and have made £51 in a week - selling a jumper, a board game, 2 of DD’s old dresses oh and another jumper. Takes seconds to upload and so no biggy if it doesn’t sell. I haven’t listed anything for less than a fiver, so it’s all pretty nice stuff, I think for anything less than that I can’t really be arsed and it goes in the charity shop bag.

witchesbubblebath · 12/12/2022 23:20

I've often thought how sellers get on on Vinted. I do very well with bargains as a buyer but can't imagine it the other way around.

Juicylychee · 13/12/2022 00:14

@witchesbubblebath it really does add up fast.

popopop · 13/12/2022 10:38

Thanks so much for the tips. These are very useful.

I'm also wondering what people post their items in. I was using old Amazon bags/Vinted items sent to me but I've ran out. Is it acceptable to send it in that brown wrapping paper or do I need to buy a load of parcels?

I sold a bag on there for £60, was am expensive gift. This is where I'm making my money, selling my husband's expensive gifts I don't want. The smaller stuff I just boldly put at a high price and people offer a lower but reasonable one.

One lady attempted to say the item was damaged and asked for money off. I just said fine, return the whole thing (it's at the buyer's expense) then she paid up.

I'm bundling things together now to sell at what I hope will be £20 a pop. It's pure profit since we don't pay for postage.

I send mine in plastic self -sealing bags which I buy in bulk from Amazon.

Juicylychee · 13/12/2022 11:03

@popopop it doesn’t matter as long as it’s secure

GimmeSleep · 13/12/2022 11:08

I don't withdraw from my balance, and just use it towards anything I might buy from there in the future.

Grazka · 13/12/2022 11:10

I've made over £50 from selling DD's clothes.
I always iron and take lots of well-light photos of the items.
Usually sell them betwen £1 and £5 per item

yetthechances · 13/12/2022 11:21

Baby clothes tend to sell for very little. Bundles might have more chance.

DashboardConfessional · 13/12/2022 11:25

I'd do bundles if I could sell DS's clothes (I can't now - he's 4 and wrecks them!)

I sell things for £5 to £10 (recently aold a Hush summer dress for a fiver) as a "better than nothing" approach. But agree people want a bargain, not to pay say £25 for a jumper even if it was £50 new.

summergone · 13/12/2022 11:26

I have become addicted to Vinted lately , little bits really do add up . I put my sons football boots thru the wash they came out like new sold for £5 , jumper for £3. I put some Hobbs shoes on at £4.50 as all the others were on at £5 etc

Parkopedia · 13/12/2022 11:37

I don't make money but I sell DDs old bits and use the balance to buy her new ones

Wishawisha · 13/12/2022 11:37

I sell plenty for £1 (and sometimes bundles of a few things together for £1) but that’s mainly to clear space or to feel that I’ve done the right thing and passed something on, you obviously don’t make much money that way. Other higher value items for more.

Same as eBay though - some things are very random. I sold a load of bundles of baby clothes online - some really nice labels (like White Company, JoJo Maman Bebe, Petit Bateau) and some sold quickly on eBay in a bit of a bidding war.. some didn’t sell for months. Same value bundles. Re-list on Vinted and another half go very quickly, others don’t. I had one bundle left I had to freecycle. Sometimes it’s just algorithm Gods I guess .. who knows…

I save all envelopes and parcels I get to re-use.

Sold and bought quite a lot on there and I do prefer to eBay now.

yetthechances · 13/12/2022 11:40

I think people offer under as they have to factor in the set buyer protection fee and percentage of item cost.

Dahliasrule · 13/12/2022 11:49

Finding this thread very interesting. I like that sellers do not pay fees on Vinted but because I live rurally I am wondering if it is practical for me. We have a post office in the village but nearest town/city is 12 miles away. I have tried looking at shipping information on the site but I find it very confusing. Does seller or buyer choose? Any help would be useful. Thanks.
