To think Tesco are becoming hellish to shop with?

I tried to go back to in store shopping after constant late deliveries and a rude driver (‘can’t find your fucking house’, it’s on an A road and we’ll marked…), but they removed so many checkouts. There’s a big self serve block, but they are crap. Always weighting wrong, poorly configured compared to elsewhere and not enough staff. Really slow to use. The few manned tills have queues to the middle aisle. Staff are demoralised, the store is functioning badly and understaffed. It takes forever.

Gave delivery a last shot and it’s even worse. First week the guy was late, then stood by the van flicking through the phone after dumping it all on the doorstep. Called out politely to him about the receipt/ substitutes and got blanked. Next week they are three hours late after 11pm, no updates for this. Said hello to the driver and got a dead eye glare back. This week didn’t arrive at all. Fair enough it snowed, but the slot was before it fell. The app didn’t update, no calls. They didn’t let anyone know they weren’t coming, and I saw other vans pass so it was possible they’d come. Roads were okish.

Today I queried the lack of info and was told that stores no longer give drivers phones or use the app updates. Said I may as well cancel the delivery pass if they are going to always be late and never let me know if and when they’ll arrive. They just cancelled the pass mid billing period and replied no further.

Do they not want customers? Is it just my local store? It’s borderline bizarre levels of shit service. I’m obviously a creature of habit to try this far, but I have re-ordered elsewhere.

No problems with tesco delivery but there seems to stock issues. I often pop into Sainsbury and dear God the lack of tills open or even worse l no one to help with self checks when they always need an assistant.

thetemptationofchocolate · 12/12/2022 16:29

We use tesco, DH goes & does it in store. Most weeks he will come home with a long list of things they didn't have. Loads of completely empty food shelves but full shelves of Christmas stuff. I wish we could swap to a different supermarket but it would mean a much longer journey to get there. It's 10 miles to Tesco as it is.

Bogglebrain · 12/12/2022 16:31

I find I can only cope with supermarkets now by using the self-scan services, they’re usually brilliant (when they work).

CeeJay81 · 12/12/2022 16:35

I find tesco the best round here. Delivery's are always on time with hardly any subs. Asda and Morrisons are rubbish. Those are the only options here.

Ilikewinter · 12/12/2022 16:40

Scan and pack is the way to go if shopping in store!. I really dont understand why people would choose to do self scan when you could have simply scanned and bagged as you go.
Id never bother with a normal checkout either bit I understand why people do still want that option.

Oxo01 · 12/12/2022 16:42

I had a home delivery planned for tonight 9pm .
They have just arrived 5 mins ago 2 people said shortage of drivers so getting around earlier as possible.
I didn't receive any updates but I am glad they came earlier. but if now wander if I was not at home if they would have came back later.
No real issues with any of my home delivery's usually.

That’s what I meant!

Very lucky in new home two months and very happy with delivery Tesco express staff excellent not the biggest of choice but for little shops it’s fine.

IneedanewTV · 12/12/2022 16:47

All of my Tesco delivery drivers are always polite and patient. I’ve been using Tesco for years - way before Covid.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 12/12/2022 16:48

Ours has been well-staffed the last couple of weeks but normally they only seem to have two staffed tills open, which is a pain. I usually buy wine there so staff intervention is going to be needed anyway, and I can never buy more than a couple of items without getting 'unexpected item in the bagging area' so I prefer a staffed till.

2ManyPjs · 12/12/2022 16:49

Think this is a Tesco store issue because we've only rarely had a problem. For the most part they turn up within the delivery window and about 90% of drivers are really friendly.

One thing I did notice once when a delivery was cancelled without any communication - could not for the life of me find any email address to contact them to complain and the phone lines were not manned at the time the delivery was due (it was a Sunday evening and about 18 months ago so they may have changed their contact options since then).

InFiveMins · 12/12/2022 16:54

YANBU. I've found Tesco and Asda to be the worst.

Not tried Morrisons in a long time but I hear they are decent.

The best in my experience have been Iceland and Ocado. Unfortunately Iceland don't stock everything I need, and Ocado is on the more expensive side!

TheNoonBell · 12/12/2022 16:59

I find it best to go when they open, 8am, it is really quite at that time and gets the chore out of the way early.

skyeisthelimit · 12/12/2022 17:10

YANBU. I have stuck with them as I have been using their home delivery for over 20 years now, but had 2 issues with non delivery and both times they didn't bother telling me in the first place, or keeping me updated once I rang to find out what was going on (one was a store meltdown with everything picked but no delivery addresses, and the other was a stuck van).

I tried Asda but they have an earlier time to finish your order, plus there are always so many substitutions, and out of stock stuff.

Sainsburys are a lot dearer. I tried Morrisons during lockdown, but had an issue with a driver when I put a box of lager beside the step as a friend was collecting it (they were 5 mins down the road and on their way). He refused to leave in case I was giving it to an under 18. He got really arsy and rang the store and then said he had to take all the shopping back if I did not take the lager inside. I told him again that my friend, aged 60, was on her way and would be here in a minute and that obviously I was waiting until she turned up but I had a bad back and was not going to carry it inside and then out again. He waited until she turned up.

I refused to use them again after that.

Crazykatie · 12/12/2022 17:12

It’s staff shortage that causes many problems at Waitrose we had 13 off sick last Friday including me with Covid, clear now and back this week

Pegasushaswings · 12/12/2022 17:13

My Tesco delivery drivers are mostly really nice and often come early but the online choice is getting smaller and smaller and I don’t think this is due to supply chain issues as Sainsbury’s doesn’t seem to have the problem. I think they are limiting what they sell online for some reason and because of it I’m thinking of jumping ship to Sainsbury’s or shopping in store.

Blanketpolicy · 12/12/2022 17:15

Our tesco is great. Most of the drivers give the dog a biscuit, all of them are helpful and polite, any subs we reject we are usually told to keep, etc. Rarely late, maybe once or twice a year, sometimes early but they phone in advance to check ok.

londonrach · 12/12/2022 17:17

I find it the easiest store to shop at. Sounds like bad shop rather than the company. Maybe feed back to head office

maximist · 12/12/2022 17:19

I only shop at Asda now, as I can use Scan & Go on my phone and it's so easy - no unloading my trolley at the checkout and packing in a rush, I can see a running total as I shop, and there's never a queue for the S&G checkouts. The only slight delay is if I buy something age restricted or get selected for a 'quality check', but it's still miles faster than a regular checkout - I'm usually through paying under a minute.

Boooooot · 12/12/2022 17:21

I’ve always hated Tesco. I go once a year because my work give us Tesco vouchers for Christmas. Icing in the cake was on Saturday I stopped to get fuel as there was nowhere else open and it’s charged a £120 holding fee that is still in my pending and not back in my account as well as the £100 fuel payment! Livid.

mondaytosunday · 12/12/2022 17:23

It must be your area - complain as I've found customer service usually very accommodating. Ive no problem with Tesco, usually get all I ordered and on time (except for one time when it was over 24 hours late, but only once in ten years). The guy yesterday though - only two crates of stuff and he watched my bend right over as he put it on the path (they normally place it in the hall and hold it up if just a couple crates) and only handed me the very last item. But that's unusual.
Sainsbury’s does odd substitutions and Waitrose doesn't even try to match the quantities of missing items (but I have had two bottles of Prosecco due to late deliveries).

RandomUsernameHere · 12/12/2022 17:30

No problems with Tesco here. Deliveries always on time and lovely polite drivers.

LiveIngSun · 12/12/2022 17:40

I guess it’s down to culture in individual places.
I don’t know tbh why i drifted back after one aggressive driver swore. Couldn’t find the house, got angry on the phone to me looking for it then very agressive when he knocked. Hammered then walked off to the van shouting ‘how was I supposed to find this fucking place?’. I was very glad my husband was there to call down and be present.
I did complain- they didn’t respond to that one at all.

Last time I used tesco, they phoned me on the day to say they couldn't deliver today and they'd be in touch. Turned up the next morning without being in touch, in a little van with less than half of my order. The guy was like yeah this isn't a delivery van and this isn't my job. Took forever to get a refund then I had to go shopping anyway!

formulatingAresponse · 12/12/2022 17:47

Sounds like your home isn't as easy to find as you think it is.

Possibly give them more hints in the delivery notes
