To feel the need to dress up on Christmas Day…

…irrespective of who is visiting. Some Christmas Days it’s just the immediate family, but I still feel I have to dress up. By dress up I mean in a nice dress or something. I have no idea where it comes from, I grew up in a very big ramshackle family and there are no external pressures. No one would care if I stayed in pjs or a onesie.

Anyone else feel the need?

I like making an effort for Xmas dinner, Im usually in my pyjamas until at least lunchtime.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/12/2022 13:02

No, I shower and put make up as usual and just wear something comfy.

Wineiscooling · 12/12/2022 13:02

Me too! I always put a dress on and gather Christmas always buys the kids a nice new smart outfit to wear! I have no idea where it comes from either ! Although this year I’m not doing my norm - I’m not cooking Christmas dinner and may even stay in onsies all day …. We’ll, thinking about it ….I’m not sure I can ! I do love a nice dress on Xmas day!

Luellie · 12/12/2022 13:02

Totally agree OP.

I'm big on celebrating the whole 12 days of Christmas... so Christmas Day is for dressing up posh, I can slouch in Christmassy jumpers for the rest of the 12 days!

xogossipgirlxo · 12/12/2022 13:02

I've got the same, even if it's just the two of us. I just like to dress nicely.

dreamingofsun · 12/12/2022 13:03

No. I absolutely feel no need at all. Comfy trousers what expand as i eat and it doesnt matter if they get stained when i cook. thats the best way to dress at christmas

randomchap · 12/12/2022 13:03

I always get dressed up as my wife brought me an absolutely hideous Christmas tie which the DC love.

I hate the tie, but as they love it, it's worn on Christmas day.

I have the sneaking suspicion that they just want their dad to look silly.

FishnetsNightdressCrisis · 12/12/2022 13:04

If you enjoy doing it then do it, same as those who want to stay in loungewear should do so, if it makes them happy.

I don't think it's particularly unusual to want to wear something nice on Christmas Day. It's a nice day and wearing something nice can make it feel that much more special, too.

MichaelFabricantWig · 12/12/2022 13:05

I always dress up, I couldn’t imagine having Christmas dinner slobbed around in pyjamas

id love to but i need to be comfy to cook .

Sartre · 12/12/2022 13:13

Whatever works for you. I don’t get dressed up per se but I don’t stay in pjs all day either, something in between I guess.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 12/12/2022 13:15

I like getting dressed up for Christmas Day

Peridot1 · 12/12/2022 13:15

I always do too. It’s a special day so why not? You can dress up and still be comfy. I’m usually in nice but comfortable trousers or jeans and a dressy top with my slippers on. I may wear a dress this year.

OoooohMatron · 12/12/2022 13:17

I dress up on Christmas eve and Christmas day. I would never in a million years spend Christmas day in PJs.

LlynTegid · 12/12/2022 13:18

The same effort as I would make for work (when going to an office).

KimberleyClark · 12/12/2022 13:20

I wear a Christmassy jumper and have ordered some Christmas tree earrings (tasteful ones!).

Workawayxx · 12/12/2022 13:20

I like to get a bit dressed up too. Plenty of other days over Christmas to wear pjs/comfy clothes and I feel more upbeat and better in myself if I make a small effort.

Usernamen · 12/12/2022 13:23

Always go on holiday for Christmas, so yes, I get dressed for leaving the hotel room! Depending on location, I might ‘dress up’ a bit for evening meal/drinks, but for me that just means a bit of lipstick and sandals instead of flip flops.

Wishawisha · 12/12/2022 13:23

Personally I do always get dressed but generally into jeans or cords with a jumper, that sort of thing. I think I’d feel a bit funny in a dress and heels in my own home, but that’s me.

SallyWD · 12/12/2022 13:25

I always wear something nicer than usual - maybe a sparkly top and a skirt. No one else in my family makes any effort to dress up!

DillDanding · 12/12/2022 13:28

I do - it's a very special day, so why not?

I don't do any of the cooking or prep though, I just swan around.

Delectable · 12/12/2022 13:29

Yes, I dress up a bit.
Was at Carol Service last night and for a few minutes I kept wondering about a lady just opposite me who was dressed like she was having a lazy day indoors. So I imagine even some people who like Christmas would not observe dressed as usual.

Delectable · 12/12/2022 13:32

Meant *will observe dressed as usual.

FourChimneys · 12/12/2022 13:40

My 25 December outfit is likely to be a fleece, bobble hat and walking boots but when we have family round for a nice meal at another time people are likely to make a small effort. This could be a nice jumper or even a snazzy new pair of running leggings but nobody would be in pjs or a onesie.
