I feel like we should be prepared for days where it'll be difficult for teachers and some children to get into school due to bad weather, so online learning can take place instead!

Gritters are out

You'll need your big coat

Life goes on

Yep, we've just had an email from the (secondary) school. "Due to the weather pupils may wish to bring a coat." Hats and gloves being a suggested addition.

We're well 'ard up North. Xmas Grin

I'm in East Sussex. Our little town is gridlocked, the nearest big road is gridlocked. Trees down, trains cancelled. Many of the kids come in by bus.most teachers drive.
Given that my 15 year old missed at least 26 weeks of education due to covid with no catch up lessons whatsoever, I hardly think an extra day is going to make much difference

I’m in e.Sussex too! Had to abandon by car and walk 2 miles home with the kids it was a nightmare!
totally agree with you!

Iwannabeacrocodilehunter · 11/12/2022 21:58

Aww, I don’t think I’d want my son to do online learning if we get snow. Id want him to go out and enjoy it! We get snow so infrequently. It would be lovely to get out the sled; the hot drinks and have a cosy snow day.
I know they’ve missed a lot due to covid, but really, one or two days won’t hurt this close to Christmas and may be the magic some of our children need after a crappy few years. I say IF we have snow that closes schools for a day, let them enjoy it.

Starlightstarbright1 · 11/12/2022 21:58

The word snowy is very vague. We had a few flakes of snow today here nothing stuck , warmer than the past couple of icy days.

People talking about online learning forget about the inequality. Our school loaned out laptops during lockdown to those who didn't have them. Those are now collected in. Not everyone has wifi access.

That said if it isn't safe for staff or students no alternative than to close

altmember · 11/12/2022 22:00

Our secondary school has announced that they're closed all day tomorrow, primary school closed until at least 11am (going to make a decision mid morning). It's icy here, that's all. No snow, and none forecast.

WaahWaahWaah · 11/12/2022 22:02

My work isn’t going to shut down tomorrow, so YABU. As a child, I dreamt of a snow day; it was a mythical thing when there was so much snow that we would get the day off. And not once in all the years did the school close.

toomuchlaundry · 11/12/2022 22:02

Schools probably didn’t have ratios or safeguarding leads in 1962/63.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 11/12/2022 21:49

It’s only a couple of inches in London. It’ll likely be gone tomorrow.

Unlikely. Forecast is for it to keep snowing all night and it's too cold for it to melt.

Ilovemycatalot · 11/12/2022 22:06

Hope the schools close and the kids can go out and enjoy the snow. Probably be gone by Tuesday anyway so hope they get at least one day to enjoy it.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 11/12/2022 22:08

@JRHartley72 not where I am 🤷🏻‍♀️ Crossing my fingers it stays true to the forecasts I’m seeing.

Meanwhile in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia (currently minus 27c in Novosibirsk) , not a single school will be closed tomorrow.

ConnieTucker · 11/12/2022 22:10

Im not looking forward to my drive in. Im an hour away from where i work and the route is a mix of rural roads and motorway. It’s really icy.

oldandfeckless · 11/12/2022 22:10

It's a sprinkling of snow.

Don't be daft

It’s almost like those countries are used to this weather…

AlwaysLatte · 11/12/2022 22:12

I'm on my boys' side here. They're 14 and 12 and hardly remember the last snowfall, so we have sledges and hot chocolate at the ready. And a chance for the staff to have a breather too!

thelobsterquadrille · 11/12/2022 22:12

We're really rural and lots of secondary kids have an hours' journey by bus on country lanes to get to school, so even if schools are open, I suspect the buses won't run as it's just not safe.

Grumpybutfunny · 11/12/2022 22:12

ScrappyCats · 11/12/2022 20:42

@Muddywaters1 - In more rural areas, the majority of staff - as well as some students - live at least 30 minute drives away and use country roads that won’t have been gritted. Ice is a real problem then, even without snow

Round here the rural roads are actually better as most of the farmers do gritting so clear the roads on their way out and in. It's the main roads the council covers which are the issue!! We also have sensible cars, if it's bad in the morning the mini will stay home and the X5 will be doing a longer trip to drop me at work before DH does the school run and goes in.

Everyone mocks the U.K... not hard to see why

Embarrassing

Only a few months ago mumsnet was crying about the heat in schools!

What those big old buses can't navigate a road in a bit of snow....gritters will have been out!

My daughter is ecstatic about the school being closed. She's halfway through an igloo and NEEDS to get it finished 😁

holycrapweasel · 11/12/2022 22:15

We have over 8 inches in our rural cotswold village. Can you see the road in this pic? I have a super old but reliable 4x4 with snow tires but I would struggle to get to school in this.

That schools should close tomorrow where it is snowyy...

Seems not in the depths of the Cotswolds. They've probably all been re-routed to priority areas like towns.

Why didn't they do the snowball/hot chocolate stuff today? The staff have had a weekend off, why so they need a 'breather'?

Gwenhwyfar · 11/12/2022 22:15

LBFseBrom · 11/12/2022 20:46

Yes plus shops, offices, factories and railway premises. Any excuse for a day off in my book. If it is pleasant and crunchy out, you can build a snowman or go to the park. Or else just snuggle up indoors.

Doesn't work for offices any more, does it? Almost every office worker has the means to work from home since Covid. Quite sad to see the end of impromptu days off.

Alexandernevermind · 11/12/2022 22:16

What are parents supposed to do about work if schools decide to close because of a few flakes of snow? I know school isn't child care, but let's face it, those with primary school ages children need children to be at school so they can work.
