I feel like we should be prepared for days where it'll be difficult for teachers and some children to get into school due to bad weather, so online learning can take place instead!

Assuming you either don’t work OP or have a very understanding employer or childcare readily available?

Please don’t wish home learning back on us.

Roundandnour · 11/12/2022 20:57

I find it baffling that as new infrastructure is built or redone simple things like weather isn’t considered.
Ots not like snow is a new thing that just started in the past few years.

Schools should only be closed where there are safety risks - we have had too many closures over the last 3 years

That's the reason schools close when there is snow and ice. It isn't a quick easy decision. The local roads are taken into account, as are the public transport routes. They also take into account the number of staff who can get in and by what time.

We rarely close. When we have it's been due to safety issue s- being able to get staff in safely, being able to get children in (and home) safely and being able to to have sufficient staff to keep to safe ratios.

We are open tomorrow.

You can't just rebuild small villages and hundreds of miles of single lane windy road!

ElfDragon · 11/12/2022 21:00

Had one school update already - site will be open for those who can get there, but not to stress about being on time. No online provision for those who can’t make it.

other school I’m not sure will be open. Very rural, and the area it is in is already a nightmare, without adding freezing overnight on top of it all. I’ll see what the update is in the morning, but there won’t be online school (SN school).

Where exactly is it going to be so snowy that transport isn't possible?

Most schools in Gloucestershire are closed tomorrow due to snow and ice. The local transport have cancelled all buses to secondary schools so they will be working online.
Only main roads are gritted so getting onto them can be really difficult.

PattyDuke · 11/12/2022 21:01

I also think that as schools can now offer online learning they can stay 'open' rather than needing to worry about the impact of 'closure days' on their data. Closing, closing early seems to be much more a thing.

SunshineAndSummer · 11/12/2022 21:02

I understand where carers have to go in etc, but this in just in regards to schools where they've already experimented with online teaching. It's not the same as face to face of course but in the past schools have closed without being substituted for online learning whereas I feel like we now have the means to do so.

And we have all seen in the past how snow just throws the country into chaos!!

@Abraxan
I agree but not all school act in the same way

I am a teacher actually myself currently on maternity. Butt I do understand that childcare becomes an issue, but if teachers can't access the school due to lack of transportation then what do we do..

You understand carers have to go in. Along with a lot of other people. What do you suggest these people do for childcare?

roarfeckingroarr · 11/12/2022 21:05

I think the teachers get more than enough time off as it is

StarDolphins · 11/12/2022 21:05

No absolutely not. I live in the Peak District where it’s snowy most winters & I fully support our schools ‘open all weathers’ policy. Everyone’s different but I like this attitude very much, they have contingency plans to ensure continuation of education. .

Workyticket · 11/12/2022 21:05

I'd rather crawl to work than teach online ever again. Some people.loved it, I hated it. I spent Tuesday night planning my lessons for this week and some aren't easily adaptable.

Most haven't got Teams logins because tech support at work is shit. It's a no from me!

BabyOnBoard90 · 11/12/2022 21:05

Missed enough school due to Covid, a lot of schools playing catchup

Not all school buses are running tomorrow in our area, or only doing some of the stops or routes, due to ungritted roads DS's school is offering remote learning

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/12/2022 20:54

Some of us have jobs where snow is when we HAVE to be in. We also worked through the whole pandemic.

I love a good snow day but when you have a job where you are always inconvenienced by everyone else wanting a fun day off, it does get a little tiresome.

Oh goody, day off for doctors and nurses…..thought not. Ridiculous that everything stops for a bit of adverse weather!

iknowwheretheothersockgoes · 11/12/2022 21:09

It's unlikely DC's school will be open tomorrow.

It's easy for me work from home, so not an issue either way.

I live in a very hilly area so the snow plays havoc on the roads around here, especially as most aren't gritted.

queenofthewild · 11/12/2022 21:09

Schools write a plan every year for adverse weather conditions and other events that may crop up.

Individual schools will know exactly what the thresholds are for closure based upon how easy their school is to access for staff and students.

DS's school often doesn't open in severe weather as most students travel by bus and the school is accessed down narrow rural lanes that ice up easily.

The school I work at is usually open as most staff and students live within walking distance.

Picklypickles · 11/12/2022 21:10

We've had an e-mail today saying our school will have a later start tomorrow morning, although it may not be possible for them to open at all depending on how icy it is and whether or not the staff can actually get there! We live in a rural village and every road into it is downhill and deadly when its icy, gritters don't come here! The snow and ice isn't really a problem for those of us who live in the village and can walk there, unfortunately that doesn't include any of the teachers!

NerrSnerr · 11/12/2022 21:12

I am a nurse and really need to try and get in. Does that mean everyone should? No I don't think so. I live in Glos and a double decker bus skidded outside my house today so I'm glad the schools are shut.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/12/2022 21:12

I suggest we keep the schools open. And try harder to have a more resilient public transport system. Children in other countries go everyday in the snow.

kittensinthekitchen · 11/12/2022 21:13

Tell me its snowing in the south east of England without saying its snowing in the south east of England.

School closures should be an absolute last resort. Schools already have plans for severe weather conditions, and always have done.

NerrSnerr · 11/12/2022 21:14

We haven't had a snow day where we live for years. My daughter is Year 4 and I think there's been one snow day and one day off for that big storm. It doesn't seem like too much to be honest.
