I feel like we should be prepared for days where it'll be difficult for teachers and some children to get into school due to bad weather, so online learning can take place instead!

OP posts:

My DH has been told to work from home today and tomorrow as it's 'too much hassle to get in to office.'

He is not in education at all and actually works from home 60% of the week anyway. Can't wait to inform his boss he is lazy, selfish whinger.

Heliumburgers · 12/12/2022 07:55

I agree.
Snow is so uncommon where we are, let the children play and enjoy it whilst it's here!

Having grown up in a country with lots of snow I find it so strange that society should 'close down' due to a few snowflakes..Confused

Bonkers isn't it. We just don't have the infrastructure though and because we only get a few snow days a year, I guess it's not worth having it sat idle (or we are just incompetent :) )

This. Received a text at 7am explaining DC’s school is closed due to staffing access issues “as the side roads around the school are dangerous”. Even the DC laughed. The school is on a quiet residential road, surrounded by other 20mph residential roads. We are in East London. No treacherous rural roads here with limited public transport. A large number of staff members live nearby in areas with buses, tubes etc. DD’s teacher lives on our road (we are a 5 min walk from the school)!

It’s absolutely ridiculous that over hundreds of children in their school will have their education disrupted because teachers could not navigate a straightforward journey to school due to a few inches of snow.

You're in London? The Tube is buggered and buses are running a skeleton service, so anyone relying on those will struggle to get in. Even if only a quarter of teachers can't make it in, the staff-pupil ratios won't meet adequate levels, and you can't blame the school for that – blame the Govt/LEAs/Health & Safety bodies that set those rules.

Oof, I’m in London too, glad that’s not the case here

borntobequiet · 12/12/2022 07:58

It is an odd culture. Look at this thread. Started by a teacher saying, ‘we should be prepared for days where it'll be difficult for teachers and some children to get into school due to bad weather’. No other profession has started a thread saying they don’t want to go to work!!

Neither, according to your quote, did the OP.

Oblomov22 · 12/12/2022 07:59

@toomuchlaundry
Depends. Either your council should have. Or if you choose to live somewhere very remote you do so with the understanding that this is one of the issues.

thelobsterquadrille · 12/12/2022 08:01

@AreOttersJustWetCats it's not just snow that's the issue though, it's ice.

It's hilly and the roads aren't gritted. Even if you have snow chains and a 4x4, that won't help you if the road is closed or blocked because a lorry has inevitably jack-knifed across it (which is what seems to happen every year in exactly the same spot Grin)

Public transport is very limited in London today actually

toomuchlaundry · 12/12/2022 08:03

@MatronicO6 why aren’t posters telling transport workers they are lazy, don’t care about the vulnerable pupils unable to get into school etc

TheLittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 12/12/2022 08:03

What is everyone doing for emergency childcare?

When she wrote this, ‘so online learning can take place instead!‘ do you think she meant she thought teachers should go into school as normal and do online learning there? Or do you think she means schools should close their doors? Don’t be disingenuous.

Well, we're in London and buses were HORRENDOUSLY slow/non-existent last night when I tried to get home by public transport.

JRHartley72 · 12/12/2022 08:06

SpicyFoodRocks · 12/12/2022 07:39

No. We didn’t at the start. The guidance was that they were not needed. Which was a lie really. It was because there were none available. It took weeks to get face masks. And then when we needed FFP2/3 ones, they didn’t fit people like me with small faces. Yet the Trust refused to pay extra for the smaller ones, even though I ‘failed’ the ‘fit test’. Never once did I consider not working though. My work was the priority.

Right, so when everyone realised that was a lie, a fuss was kicked up a fuss to make sure healthcare professionals got what they needed to work safely. Yet when school staff asked for the same consideration they were labelled selfish.

JRHartley72 · 12/12/2022 08:06

Bugger. Angry typing = shit editing.

toomuchlaundry · 12/12/2022 08:06

@SpicyFoodRocks who do you think would be teaching the online learning?

Good point! What about those selfish Tube drivers not making an effort to get their trains working!

My OH is on his way to his school and will teach online from there. He has to, all his online resources and texts are there.

toomuchlaundry · 12/12/2022 08:09

@JRHartley72 and it’s not like they will be working remotely, unlike DC’s teachers who will be providing lessons remotely from their homes if they can’t get into school due to those lazy public transport workers!

I am sure they are all typing strongly worded emails to TFL right now demanding what they are meant to arrange childcare.

Tirrrrred · 12/12/2022 08:10

Slighting OTT.

Yes I do have those.

Drafting mine now. Also going to complain to bus companies and Amazon for saying my parcel might be delayed today. Deliver it on foot, you lazy feckers!

No, I meant that the OP didn’t say teachers don’t want to go to work. As I wrote.

Bayleaf25 · 12/12/2022 08:20

To be fair we did have a lot yesterday, Gloucestershire/Cotswolds and it’s hilly. Roads impassable, police closed major routes due to number of cars stuck, blocking roads. Over 5 inches in a short space of time. Pavements and side roads are now like ice. You really would need a 4x4 to get up the hills and to some of the local schools.
