To wash clothes with a squirt of washing up liquid and some fabric conditioner….?!

I’ve run out of washing powder and we are due to get some tomorrow with our Tesco delivery.

However, I need to wash uniforms for tomorrow.

I really can’t be bothered going out to buy some, so I was wondering if I could get away with a squirt of washing up liquid and some fabric conditioner? None of the clothes are filthy, but they do need a bit of a wash.

AIBU to improvise?

Done it loads of time just use a teaspoon full .

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 11/12/2022 14:10

ask a neighbour for a bit of powder ?

Wiloswisp · 11/12/2022 14:13

And definitely don’t do it in the dishwasher! Wondered what on earth was advancing down the hall, the kitchen floor and most of the hall was covered in soap suds, we did laugh eventually! Didn’t know we were out of dishwashing tablet, DH said it was the smallest of squirts.

Justellingthetruth · 11/12/2022 14:28

@JemimaPyjamas

yiu will end up with loads and loads of foam everywhere!

I use washing up liquid on stains all the time, put some on the clothes and rub into the stain. Works wonders and never had a foam party in the kitchen. It’s not the same as a dishwasher as the clothes absorb the suds and are then rinsed. It will be fine OP but just water and fabric softener will also be fine.

I do this too. Collars on shirts, grease stains etc. It never foams up for me.

ShillyShallySherbet · 11/12/2022 14:36

If the clothes aren’t actually dirty I’d just wash them with fabric softener alone to freshen them up.

Baublesandtinsel · 11/12/2022 14:39

It will be fine I've done it before now just don't put to much in as you will have a bubble party then.

Any neighbours you can ask for a scoop / tab?

I've used washing up liquid on grease stains [several stains over a few items] and then washed the clothes (unrinsed) in the machine without the foam party.

I've done this too. Disappointed I haven't had an impromptu foam party!

Love the suggestions of "go to the shop and buy some"

😂😂😂

Or just go to your corner shop and buy some detergent

Not everyone lives in walking distance to a shop! My closest corner shop is a fifteen minute drive each way!

IglesiasPiggl · 11/12/2022 14:48

Can you ask a neighbour for a dose of detergent?

DatingDinosaur · 11/12/2022 14:48

I've used shower gel when I've run out of laundry detergent in the past. Can't say it's caused any damage to my machine or created a foam party. I opted for shower gel over washing up liquid as shower gel is designed for being used on skin whereas washing up liquid isn't.

As an emergency one off I don't see a problem though, unless you've got sensitive skin.

Washing machine not working, so hand washed the kids and my uniform with fairy liquid and fabric conditioner.

No neighbours?

I would just go with the fabric conditioner. I think there is often enough residue of washing powder in the machine to get stuff clean for one wash. I wouldn't risk damging your machine with washing up liquid

This. There’ll be enough detergent residue in the machine that you can get away with one wash without any detergent, especially if the clothes aren’t very dirty.

This op.

Do not, I repeat DO NOT put washing up liquid in your washing machine (or dishwasher for that matter)

Needarest22 · 11/12/2022 14:55

A little bit of vinegar to deodorise? Plus fabric conditioner. Plus some soda crystals if you have any?

Barleycat · 11/12/2022 14:56

Just wash in machine with no powder

LemonSwan · 11/12/2022 14:58

I did this in the dishwasher once. Absolutely hilarious chaos ensued 🤣🤣🤣

CecilyP · 11/12/2022 14:58

I think you might end up with bubbles everywhere. I have very occasionally forgotten to put clothes washing liquid in my not very dirty washing and it’s come up fine. Probably from the residue of what wasn’t completely rinses out last time.

Hahahaha yes this was us 🤣

FermisLeftFoot · 11/12/2022 15:09

I’ve done it before with a very small squirt and it was fine. Probably only used a tea spoon full though or a little less.

JemimaPyjamas · 11/12/2022 13:58

Thank god I asked first! I had no idea, clearly.

The washing now has a blob of shampoo (Tresemme sulphate free) in it and a bit of fabric conditioner.

Oh, and DH has just informed me that there is actually some non-bio he bought ages ago in the cupboard...!

You haven't put the shampoo in the washing machine have you?

WhatInFreshHell · 11/12/2022 15:22

You've put shampoo in the washing machine?!!!

BabyFour2023 · 11/12/2022 15:24

I’d just buy some detergent today. It’s not like you won’t get round to using the other stuff.
