To wash clothes with a squirt of washing up liquid and some fabric conditioner….?!

I’ve run out of washing powder and we are due to get some tomorrow with our Tesco delivery.

However, I need to wash uniforms for tomorrow.

I really can’t be bothered going out to buy some, so I was wondering if I could get away with a squirt of washing up liquid and some fabric conditioner? None of the clothes are filthy, but they do need a bit of a wash.

AIBU to improvise?

No to washing up liquid in the machine - you'll wreck it.

DunkingMyDonuts · 11/12/2022 13:12

No harm in giving it a go!

mamabear715 · 11/12/2022 13:12

Umm, did that years ago, didn't end well.. ;-)
Maybe I put too big a squirt in!

SixCharactersinSearchofanAuthor · 11/12/2022 13:13

Yeah but what if you end up with endless foam coming out of the washing machine covering the entire kitchen?

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/12/2022 13:13

Do you want a foam party?

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 11/12/2022 13:13

No no no, the bubbles will go crazy, you're risking an overflow. Laundry detergent doesn't lather.

Hunkahunkaa · 11/12/2022 13:14

Be careful as with all the aggregation it will cause a heck of a lot of bubbles. You would be better using some soap dissolved in hot water and allowed to cool as this will not froth up. Just like using soap flakes like granny used to do.

Dotcheck · 11/12/2022 13:14

Hand washing ( then rinse and spin in washing machine)- yes
Dish soap in machine- no

coldec · 11/12/2022 13:14

Hand wash? Yes. In the machine? No.

Nanny0gg · 11/12/2022 13:14

Your washing machine won't like it. And washing up liquid is designed to deal with grease not dirt or BO etc. You'll also maybe get left with residue on the clothes

So, no. Bad idea

mintich · 11/12/2022 13:14

I'd just do fabric conditioner alone

Galarunner · 11/12/2022 13:14

I would just go with the fabric conditioner. I think there is often enough residue of washing powder in the machine to get stuff clean for one wash. I wouldn't risk damging your machine with washing up liquid

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 11/12/2022 13:15

Just use the fabric conditioner without the fairy, do a small wash with just the stuff you need for tomorrow and while it won't be the cleanest washing you've ever done it will be fine for one day.

greenacrylicpaint · 11/12/2022 13:17

washing up liquid might produce too much foam.
a table spoon of shampoo would work better. (we use shampoo for silk & woolens)

GalwayShawl · 11/12/2022 13:19

Chip off some dishwasher tablet and use that with conditioner

I’ve done that before

bloodyeverlastinghell · 11/12/2022 13:19

Check your cupboards for bicarbonate of soda, it will clean and deodorise. Great in a pinch.

Fourcandleforkhandle · 11/12/2022 13:21

Grate normal soap bar and put in the drum with the clothes. This will not work on a cold wash though because the soap will not dissolve easily and may be left on the Clothes.

BertieBotts · 11/12/2022 13:22

Wash without detergent. Stick some white vinegar in if you have any. I've forgotten to put detergent in before and it was OK.

Washing up liquid will cause rivers of foam out of the machine.

Rainbowshit · 11/12/2022 13:23

Don't!! Unless you want foam all over your floor. I would just wash with fabric conditioner alone.

Haus1234 · 11/12/2022 13:23

Have you ever seen what happens when someone puts washing up liquid in a dishwasher? That will happen.

BertieBotts · 11/12/2022 13:23

I wouldn't even put the fabric softener in TBH.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/12/2022 13:24

I've done it before - literally a teaspoon is enough.

quietnightmare · 11/12/2022 13:24

I put liquid in the other day on the washing only a squirt and it was fine

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/12/2022 13:25

Or just go to your corner shop and buy some detergent

VioletLemon · 11/12/2022 13:26

Not washing up liquid, I found to my cost it foams like mad.
Hand wash liquid might be better or grate a bar of soap to make some flakes. Got me thinking should I go back to the old soap flakes!
