Sleeping with the heating on?

Sorry just posting here for traffic really.

A couple of hours before DD (19m) goes to bed, I’ll put the heating on in the room just to warm it up for her. As it’s been getting colder. I’ve been leaving the heating on until I go to sleep with DS (7m) around 11pm. It’s currently -3 outside and really cold. Is it okay to leave the heating on overnight or should I not do that?

I’m pretty sure the last time I slept with the heating on, I woke up with a headache and dry throat so I obviously don’t want anything like that to happen to the kids. Thanks

Perhaps set it to a lower temperature so it doesn’t dip too low

AutumnCrow · 10/12/2022 23:38

Yes you can sleep with heating on.

Have some water available for you, and the DC, if you get a dry throat etc.

GoAgainstNicki · 10/12/2022 23:39

Unfortunately my heating system makes no sense. There’s a dial in the room from 0-5 which controls the heating. This place is so ridiculous that if you try to put it any lower than 4, it’ll turn off. So the option is either on full blast or completely off

I accidentally left the heating on in my bedroom last night. I had the best night's sleep ever! I never usually turn it on in my bedroom and I'm getting about 4 hours sleep per night. Now I know why!

GoAgainstNicki · 10/12/2022 23:42

Thank you guys. I’ll be keeping the heating on and if I/the kids get too hot in the night I’ll just turn it off

Ooo I might try this tonight, in case it helps me too!

LeavesOnTrees · 10/12/2022 23:45

It might be cheaper to buy a really good feather down duvet ( if you don't have one already)

determinedtomakethiswork · 10/12/2022 23:46

It's going to cost you an absolute fortune to keep it on all night. There's no need for it. Turn it off now and put it on first thing.

RagzRebooted · 10/12/2022 23:48

I usually have ours off as I sleep better without it, but DC's room got down to 12 degrees the night before last and DS2 said he waking up as he was cold (though not cold enough to bother to use the extra blanket at the end of his bed), so I had it on low last night and it didn't go under 15 in there (thermostat was set at 12, but it's in the downstairs hallway). I worry about him breathing cold air as he has asthma. Silly really, as we go camping when it's colder than that outside at night and he sleeps in a basha at cadet camp!

DuplicateUserName · 10/12/2022 23:54

I think anyone who needs the heating on at night probably doesn't have a warm enough duvet and pyjamas etc.

Even when it's snowing outside we still turn ours off at night but each to their own.

Entwifery · 10/12/2022 23:55

It will be fine, I always have the heat on at night (on about 16/17) as I run very cold and can't sleep in a cold room. Nothing bad has happened yet

Season0fTheWitch · 11/12/2022 00:00

As long as you're properly hydrated, the heating isn't going to cause any problems. Make sure a drink is available in her room, she'll probably wake up if too warm.

It's very cold here, 8° with the heating off so we have it on all the time now

Comefromaway · 11/12/2022 00:00

My thermostat is set to 15 overnight. It rarely comes on but does if it gets really cold.

Surely that's because it's reached temperature?

Doingmybest12 · 11/12/2022 00:05

Never, ever put heating on overnight. Warm quilt, another blanket, socks if needed, pyjamas. It seems such a waste of energy.

IntheSnowySnowyMountains · 11/12/2022 00:07

@Comefromaway normally ours is too. It regularly hits -10 outside in winter. If we turn it off the house takes ages to warm up in the morning.

We currently have no boiler and yes the house is freezing. We have a wood fire and a few electric radiators. It is costing peanuts to leave the radiator in the bedroom on very low over night (cheap overnight electricity).

LBFseBrom · 11/12/2022 00:11

I always have the heating on at night in cold weather. I turn the temperature down a bit but it is still nice and warm. It's currently 0deg C here. Brrrrrrrr.

NewBootsAndRanty · 11/12/2022 00:12

Lung condition, so 18 overnight and 21 in the day. Cough like a bastard otherwise.

NewBootsAndRanty · 11/12/2022 00:14

The Lullaby Trust say 16-22 is fine for babies, mind.

BabyOnBoard90 · 11/12/2022 00:15

On overnight?! I'm realising more and more a lot of people must receive their energy bills quarterly.

We're in for a surprise in a couple months

Soothsayer1 · 11/12/2022 00:17

I know some people do but I love a cold room at night...with lots of blankets & a hot water bottle😍

I panic when my smart meter online doesn't update for a couple of hours Grin

Dinoboymama · 11/12/2022 00:30

We have our heating on auto so if it dips below 21 it kicks in day or night it's been on most of the night as it's been -6/7 degrees here.
We have a child who if cold affects their breathing so we don't turn it off.

ExcuseeeeMe · 11/12/2022 00:45

I have left heating on last few nights but on low. I woke up the other day and it was 13 in the house . It took hours to get it back up to a comfortable temperature. I’m going to try leaving it on low at night to see if it costs a lot more than having to have it on for hours in the morning to get temp back up

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 11/12/2022 00:50

I don't - I have two duvets on my bed so I'm sleeping under 27 togs, with a hot water bottle. It's 8 - 10 degrees in my bedroom overnight so the effect is one of a lovely warm cocoon; if I overheat I can move a foot to the icy wastes of the edge of the bed to cool down Grin. Getting up in the morning is Not Fun.
