Sleeping with the heating on?

GoAgainstNicki · 10/12/2022 23:33

Sorry just posting here for traffic really.

A couple of hours before DD (19m) goes to bed, I’ll put the heating on in the room just to warm it up for her. As it’s been getting colder. I’ve been leaving the heating on until I go to sleep with DS (7m) around 11pm. It’s currently -3 outside and really cold. Is it okay to leave the heating on overnight or should I not do that?

I’m pretty sure the last time I slept with the heating on, I woke up with a headache and dry throat so I obviously don’t want anything like that to happen to the kids. Thanks

We’ve been messing around with our heating due to the energy crisis, tried turning our heating off when we go to bed and I absolutely hate it, I often wake up and when I move the bed sheets were so cold it took forever to get back to sleep. Utterly miserable, fleecy pj’s socks etc just don’t help the fact that the bed sheets are cold. DH is fine with it off, so I’ve decamped to a little spare room and turned the heating on.

@Wiloswisp i usually like 'nice/good quality'' bed linen & the thought of 'teddy bear' linen didn't appeal At All. However, Tesco kept promoting theirs, then had it in special offer and I bought a set & a fitted sheet. It's great! I don't like the bedroom heated, but I hate getting into freezing sheets, but can't tolerate an electric blanket not even if turned off an hour before I go to bed. I put the duvet cover in the top as a throw, and take it off before I get into bed, I'd be too hot using it as a duvet cover.

No more cold sheets, not at bedtime or through the night!!

I bought another Tesco Teddy Bear fitted sheet last week £13, it's lovely & fluffy, last years us a bit 'flat' but it's still stops the bed being cold to get into & not cold when you move around at night.

@GoAgainstNicki Can you not just put DD in super snuggly bed wear?there are some very cosy things that look like pram suits, but designed for sleeping in. Much more than just a onsie, but look kind of the same and just put her empty duvet cover or whatever over her do it feels 'normal' if it's only kicking off covers you're worried about?

kingtamponthefurred · 11/12/2022 12:04

It won't kill you or anything, but a heated duvet might be more effective.

GoAgainstNicki · 11/12/2022 12:17

There’s no thermometer in the room. All we have is a dial from 0-5 which lets you put the heating on.

@SkylightSkylight this is a smart idea. She currently sleeps in a long sleeve vest and a sleepsuit. She’s never woken up from being cold but I always wonder if she is. I’m currently on the way to Primark so will have a look for thicker pjs for her age. Thank you:)

A lot of these posts tell me how badly we need better insultated housing. Currently we have had tbe heating on in the evening, set at 19/20 degrees. It goes off at 10pm. Recently with the cold weather the thermostat has measured 16 degrees in the morning, perfectly ok if you are healthy and have decent warm bedding. Why is everyone losing so much heat over night?

We never have the heating on overnight, unless it is very very cold and then it will be on frost setting to avoid any pipe freezing issues.

But to answer the question, no having the heating on over night won't cause problems (except maybe to your wallet).

I agree with this. We heat our house to 20 in the evening. It is set to 15/16 overnight just in case and hasn't needed to come on at night so far.

YellowTreeHouse · 11/12/2022 12:31

I would never sleep without heating on in the autumn and winter. Sometimes Spring too if it’s still a bit cool.

It doesn’t make you ill 🙄

nalabae · 11/12/2022 04:42

My house gets to hot if yours doesn’t then go ahead

Most systems have a thermostat don’t they? So it won’t get too hot, it’ll cut out and keep it at the temp you set.
also very one saying ‘get warmer bedding’ - how is that helping when it’s breathing in cold air which might affect OPs child?

teenagestress · 11/12/2022 12:36

@GoAgainstNicki

If DD takes her covers off have you thought of getting a sleeping bag for her? My DD (20 months) does the same so we bought a few 2.5 / 3 tog sleeping bags and she's toasty warm every morning when we unzip her 🙂

BooseysMom · 11/12/2022 12:42

ExcuseeeeMe · 11/12/2022 00:45

I have left heating on last few nights but on low. I woke up the other day and it was 13 in the house . It took hours to get it back up to a comfortable temperature. I’m going to try leaving it on low at night to see if it costs a lot more than having to have it on for hours in the morning to get temp back up

I set it so it would come on if it dropped below 18 and all night I could hear the thermo on the wall clicking when the temp dropped below 18. So now it only comes on if it drops below 16. It is dropping to 16.5 - 17. As a pp said, we're all going to be in for a surprise when the bills come in.

Blueyismylife · 11/12/2022 12:45

We never have the heating on overnight. 2 out of 3 family members have asthma and really plays havoc for them. Thick duvets and long pjs and everyone is warm....lot cheaper too!

carefulcalculator · 11/12/2022 12:47

Comefromaway · 11/12/2022 00:00

My thermostat is set to 15 overnight. It rarely comes on but does if it gets really cold.

We do this, it only occasionally comes on.

Augend23 · 11/12/2022 12:54

I set my thermostat to 12 overnight and it's 12.5 when I am waking up in the morning down from 17 or 18 at the point the heating goes off at 9 in the evening. So the heat loss is really quite scary!

It's hugely wasteful though.

I know I'm the generation that had frost inside the windows as a child, but unless living in very old housing, you should be warm enough in bed with the right bedding and just have the heating come on half an hour before you get up.

QuinkWashable · 11/12/2022 13:17

I'm warm enough (more than warm, I often wake up in the morning a bit sweaty!) under my duvet/blankets - BUT I've been suffering from a lingering cough following the flu last month, so I've had the heating on low overnight (room was going down to 12 degrees - again, I felt fine in bed, but it was very cold, so now I've put the heating so it's at least 16 at night) and it's cleared my chest up.

I think that occasional cold (camping etc) is different to every night, even if you feel warm

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/12/2022 13:31

I think the issue is if your home retains heat properly, the air inside shouldn't be that cold. If you heat to 20 degrees up to, say 10pm, then it should stay a decentish temperature inside for most of the night unless you have a very leaky or drafty house.

megletthesecond · 11/12/2022 13:37

Always on in the winter here. I have a winter duvet and fleecy pj's. I just don't generate my own heat when I'm not moving. The cooler air woke me up when I used to turn the heating off or on low.

GoAgainstNicki · 11/12/2022 13:48

It seems some people seem to be missing the point. For example, in my mum’s flat she has a thermostat and she can set it on whatever degree she wants. So if she puts it on 18 degrees then the heating will automatically come on once it drops below that. I don’t have that option. I also can’t set the boiler so the heating comes on 30mins/1hr before we wake up as I don’t have a boiler.

All I have is the most useless system that I’ve ever come across. I literally just have a 0-5 dial in every room and that controls the heating for that room. We can have the most warmest bedding available but the room is still cold. We’re breathing in cold air. DD will probably feel the cold the most but as @teenagestress has said, I’ll log into getting a sleeping bag for DD. I feel as if she’ll find a way to wiggle out of it but let me at least try. Thank you for the tip!

@GoAgainstNicki is your heating gas or electric?

If you own can you look at getting better thermostat like a NEST system?

I have absolutely no clue! I don’t own though, I just rent

Do people not use their thermostats on MN? I put mine on 17-18 at night done. Fiddling with the heating on and off seems like it use more energy to get it back up.

woodhill · 11/12/2022 14:00

We left ours on at 15 the last couple of days

AgentJohnson · 11/12/2022 14:12

It’s 2 degree’s C outside, the living room thermostat is set to 19 and at present the living room is 20,6, so the heating isn’t on. The thermostat in DD’s (15) room is set to 18,5 and her room is currently at 20,3 (the blackout curtains are working a treat. The heating will go down to 18 when we go to the UK over Christmas. Our well insulated apartment has never dipped below 18,5 in the last five years so essentially it will be off, unless it gets unreasonably cold when we are away.

That would be a complete waste of money for us.

We don't need it during the night at all, due to warm bedding/pyjamas so whoever's up first sticks it on for an hour or so.

Then during the day/evening we stick it on as and when we need it, which isn't too often really.

No, it’s not a waste. I like it toasty.

It doesn't even come back on though maybe fires up once during the night then it's warm when you get up. Nothing worse then having to get dressed under the duvet because it's absolutely freezing.
