l have Netflix, Prime & Disney but still can't watch old films

It really pisses me off! I pay for all these services but still can't watch old (ish) films without having to 'rent or buy'. I was looking to watch Gremlins today, but I'd have to pay for it on top of my subscriptions. I mean, old films like National Lampoons Xmas Vacation, 80's films that I've watched loads of times when they've been on tv. Is ot just me or is it a rip off?

Yes I’m so annoyed. I’m going to CEX tomorrow & I have a list of dvds i’m looking for. Some films i want to watch aren’t even available in my region?!

LWTW · 10/12/2022 20:21

I've noticed this too! I wanted to watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with my DS and it isn't on any of my paid streaming services.

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 10/12/2022 20:22

Completely agree. I have those, plus Now (though not the movie bit of that) but still find myself going to CEX or charity shops. Prime wanted £12 for Titanic. It was £1 in CEX on dvd.

GoodVibesHere · 10/12/2022 21:36

The thing is I still want to keep Netflix etc. for the new releases and series', but it is a bit weird to not be able to get things like chitty bang bang or the wizard of oz, or random 80's naff comedies and all the films I grew up watching every year at Christmas.

I don't really want to build up a DVD collection again, as part of the appeal of streaming is having less stuff to store. But it feels a bit of a rip-off to have to buy or rent films that have been on tv hundreds of times on top of my monthly fees!

This is why I'm a bit hmm about getting rid of my DVD collection.

ImAvingOops · 10/12/2022 21:46

Agree. Prime in particular pusses my off - if you are paying for prime you should be able to watch everything that it streams, without having to pay extra.

Augend23 · 10/12/2022 21:46

Yeah this annoys me as well. I need to locate Grease next time I see a copy in the charity shop. I also would prefer not to have a DVD collection.

I solve some of it with my club Lloyds account. It's free if you pay in £1500 a month, and you can have a rakuten movie code every month which works quite well for the odd thing you remember you want to watch but can't find in the usual places.

MattDamon · 10/12/2022 21:50

Most people I know have gone back to torrenting or use IPTV in addition to paid services. It's partially down to the cost of living crisis but it's also for this reason.

SausagePourHomme · 10/12/2022 21:57

worth checking ITV hub, there's a surprising number of decent movies on there if you can put up with the ads. Also iplayed and 4od both have good stuff.

LoveBluey · 10/12/2022 22:16

I really hate this with prime especially as on the kids profile it's not supposed to show paid for films - they don't show up on the main profile page - but they do appear if you search for them. Now my DD is learning to spell she searches for her favourite and it then comes up in results but needs to be paid for and I then have to say no.

Davros · 10/12/2022 22:17

You need TPTV and/or Apple TV (not plus)

Itsoktogiveup · 10/12/2022 23:53

Yanbu

I buy the dvds on Amazon/ ebay because it’s cheaper than renting it for 24 hrs. Ridiculous

Rainbunny · 11/12/2022 00:15

We also have almost every streaming service you can imagine (it's not me it's my DH who wants them all) but there are so many times when I'd love to see old movies - Hitchcock movies, Ealing comedies, The Prisoner of Zenda, Bette Davis, Cary Grant films etc... and they're nowehere to be found, often not even to rent. Where did all the old movies go?

PaulRobinsonsSeventhWife · 11/12/2022 00:30

I still miss Lovefilm, would pay for an online equivalent.

thecrispfiend · 11/12/2022 00:36

Oh wow if completely forgotten about love film! You would rent a dvd and it was posted to you wasn't it? Then you posted it back?

EvilRingahBitch · 11/12/2022 00:46

iPlayer has got a good selection of really old films. Channel 4 and ITV also surprisingly good. And Talking Pictures TV has a streaming service for rare oldies, but that's only for use in a browser: it doesn't have a smart TV app.

I agree that it's a pain if you want to watch something specific though. My local CEX is winding down its DVD sales which was briefly a good cheap option.

Yes and it had almost everything...blockbusters, indie films, foreign films, Tv shows. Was such good value £7.99 for 4 discs a month or something.

JaninaDuszejko · 11/12/2022 00:51

Yeah, we've found this as well and it's why we're not getting rid of our DVDs.

thecrispfiend · 11/12/2022 00:56

@PaulRobinsonsSeventhWife that's it I remember now you had about 4 a month / it was brilliant 🤩 and loads of choice as you say!

Awww Love Film was amazing. The DVD dropping through your door & the not knowing which one it was. Happy Days

GeorgiaGirl52 · 11/12/2022 02:09

Can you access YouTube where you are? Many of the older films and series are available free on there. I stumbled across Rumpole of the Bailey last month.

MoreTeaLessCoffee · 11/12/2022 02:24

Cinema Paradiso is still going, equivalent to Lovefilm. I cancelled my subscription when I had a baby but will restart when she's a bit older. There's a gap in the market for movie streaming, I wonder what the barriers are?

LadyAstor · 11/12/2022 02:24

Agree with all of this.

Its such a shame you cant watch a classic old film on mainstream TV anymore.

I spend over £100 a month on entertainment services. I have the full Sky package, plus Apple TV and Paramount+ and Prime but still cant see any old films (by old, I mean films from the 40s 50s 60s 70s and 80s.

The range seems to have gone right down too, with each service showing the same films. Where once, you'd have thousands of films to choose from on Sky, now there's only about 100 of the same, tired old titles Ive seen dozens of times before.

I know there's YouTube and TV Encore and the BFI but I dont want to watch a film on my phone or tablet, I want it on the big screen (telly).

If someone set up a service doing this theyd make a killing.

LadyAstor · 11/12/2022 02:27

The barrier is usually licensing, as the film screening rights and royalties have to be paid.

More pertinent though is the obsession with the youth audience and anything new.

I long for the day Music Man appears on one of these platforms. YANBU
