to think Elon Musk is shining direct sunlight on a very grubby state of affairs?

Just staggered at what's coming out tbh. When he first bought Twitter there were several lengthy threads on here lamenting that Twitter would soon move to the Right and be full of hate. Now it appears that no one was bothering to work on child protection, child sexual abuse and exploitation routinely unaddressed, and Twitter employees were working directly with the FBI and government to censor stories some which arguably had direct impacts on how people would vote. Are there any threads on here discussing what's coming out like there were screening about how horrific it was all going to be, because I can't see any?

That's where I stand too @SmartWatch

I genuinely did want a discussion, for example the post detailing who has been let back on. I wasn't aware of them in particular, now I am. However I am also aware of multiple brave men and women who were banned and "cancelled" for saying things like "Men Can't Be Women Tho" and who are now gradually being let back on. It feels like he's trying to restore balance and I believe he is a free speech absolutist as am I so I am very interested to see how it all plays out. As ever though snark and bristling at the slightest whiff of disagreement seems to be the order of the day.

Translation: as long as he prevents transphobes (oh, sorry "the gender critical") from being called out effectively I don't give a flying fuck about race hatred, qanon or Trumpists being given free rein too...
The agenda for this oh so rational "discussion" is pretty damn clear.

@BewareTheLibrarians

What are the links? I didn't realise it all had a political slant?

ChristmasJoysuckers · 11/12/2022 20:34

What is CSE??

People weren't being "called out" for having gender-critical views. They were being banned.

BloodAndFire · 11/12/2022 20:42

I'm Jewish, twitter has been an antisemites' paradise for years.

Justanotherlurker · 11/12/2022 20:43

@LondonWolf

Shitlibs are having a difficult time realising they are a shitlib struggling for a response because the press they rely on hasn't yet found the 'smoking gun' to show it is false (four leaks now and no one has come out and privided any evidence to the contarary) and working for a company in the bay area no one is denying or suprised by the leaks.

A lot of the replys are obviously from a UK perspective of thinking Russia interfered in elections and ignoring the Alphabet agencies involvement.

As has been shown on this thread, there is no bad tactics just bad targets, and those parroting that narrative use twitter 😂

Do you actually, honestly think it's 'transphobic' to say that people can't change sex? Have you really thought that through? How does that work - is nature transphobic, is that it?

JackTorrance · 11/12/2022 20:51

But clownfish!

TheKeatingFive · 11/12/2022 20:53

But clownfish!

And avocados. Also eels.

Are humans just not trying hard enough? Perhaps that's it.

What is CSE??

Child Sexual Exploitation.

See also CSAM - Child Sexual Abuse Material.

picklemewalnuts · 11/12/2022 21:05

Those defending the old Twitter and decrying the 'transphobes' now allowed back...

Do you have any response to @Dotellhimpike s post about the glaring CSE issue with their trust and safety guy?

Translation: letting paedophiles freely share images of child sex abuse blatantly under the noses of moderators is fine because those sorts of moderators are the ones who ban uppity women for standing up for the rights of women and girls by stating biological reality 🙄.

Dotellhimpike · 11/12/2022 21:36

"because those sorts of moderators are the ones who ban uppity women for standing up for the rights of women and girls by stating biological reality 🙄."

It's true, the Venn diagram of those who turned a blind eye to CSAM and those who think stating biological facts is literal violence worthy of a ban, is a complete circle. We've been saying so for years and we have the reciepts, no amount of wailing and gnashing of teeth trying to make Musk out to be the big bad in all of this, is going to wash.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/12/2022 09:51

Yes, women were being silenced for daring to speak our name and claim our own understanding of who we are.

A bit like gynephobia and patriarchy through the ages really.

MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2022 09:56

How can someone be ‘called out’ for stating a biological fact. Is it just a fact related to women’s biological reality that gets this silencing.

It’s madness that we got to that place

CantFeelMyFingers · 12/12/2022 10:29

I heard this morning Chief Twit has called for Anthony Fauci (the US Chris Whitty) to be prosecuted. Now we can all debate whether scientists got it right or wrong with the benefit of hindsight, but Fauci has a PhD and specialises in infectious diseases. He was one of the only people to publicly disagree with Trump when he was coming out with (actual) misinformation about COVID. Fauci is already under protection as has been heavily targeted by conspiracy theorists. That security detail will now have to significantly increased and there is a real threat to his life.

Musk doesn’t want free speech. He wants speech that he agrees with to be free. Big difference. He will just use the platform to push his own agenda and any real debate will be lost.

Between SpaceX and Twitter its my view he is one of the most dangerous people in the world.

TheKeatingFive · 12/12/2022 10:36

Exactly the same as the previous incumbents, it's just that you agreed with them and not musk.

Calling for Fauci to be prosecuted is dumb, but it's not hate speech as far as I'm aware, therefore it's an opinion that should be allowed to be expressed. Public health officials got lots of things wrong in the pandemic. A PhD doesn't mean that can't be discussed.

We need a very strong/robust definition of what hate speech is and for that to be stuck to in terms of banning it. But opinions you don't agree with shouldn't simply be banned.

SantaCarlaCalifornia · 12/12/2022 10:48

Exactly the same as the previous incumbents, it's just that you agreed with them and not musk.

That's exactly what it is.

People are fine with speech being suppressed as long as they agree with whoever is doing the suppression.

It's a dangerous game to play and I'm surprised more people can't see it.

Dotellhimpike · 12/12/2022 10:53

Musk's comments on Fauci are dumb but I see plenty of people on Twitter saying just that, so what's the issue?

CantFeelMyFingers · 12/12/2022 10:58

I didn’t say it was hate speech, nor did I say those opinions should be banned (I actually said we can debate), nor did I say a PhD means they are infallible (but Fauci knows more about gain of function studies he is accused of funding than someone with an economics degree).

However to not acknowledge the enormous reach Musk has himself and implications of him posting something like that is naive. Bit like Trump encouraging the riots at Capitol Hill. I don’t think the prior leadership team had it right all the time either ie. the suppression of various Hunter Biden allegations, but there is a direct link between extreme views being propagated and the increase of violence. There have been studies on the massive increase in conspiracy theories since COVID. Maybe some are true, maybe some aren’t but Musk and others can accuse anyone without evidence and it suits him to dabble in the controversial to get more clicks. Twitter business model is dead without ad revenue.

Dotellhimpike · 12/12/2022 11:02

Bit like Trump encouraging the riots at Capitol Hill.

How? One is a call for violent insurrection, the other is expressing a view with no power or influence to have that view enacted. Sure, a lot of idiots might agree with him on that but they aren't putting Fauci on trial.

CantFeelMyFingers · 12/12/2022 11:04

Dotellhimpike · 12/12/2022 10:53

Using Musks own logic, why hasn’t he attacked Trump for the same thing? It is a statistical fact that areas with high percentages of republican voters who followed Trumps advice had higher death rates. Now I’m not saying lockdowns are good and can cause all sorts of other economic issues/deaths as we know - but he’s chosen to go after Fauci who already has a huge issue with conspiracy theorists and death threats. You say ‘that’s dumb’ but the point is loads of people don’t think it is and the latest attack has just fed into that.

No worries though, it’s all free speech unless you’re on the receiving end being targeted.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 12/12/2022 11:09

TheKeatingFive · 10/12/2022 14:11

That's got nothinh to do with the right to freedom of expression and you've just illustrated the PP point perfectly.

So what has it to do with then? People were prevented from stating biological fact on the platform. Is that okay in your eyes?

Yes, that's fine because twitter was and is a private company who can allow whatever content or narrative they want on their site. It's not against any law or right for twitter to push agendas or narratives their owners/board support.

Freedom of expression gives you the right to hold and impart your own opinions/ideas/views without interference from a public authority (as long as your opinions/ideas/views are within the bounds of the law). It doesn't give you the right to air your views on a privately owned internet platform.

That said, there is certainly room for a discussion around whether Article 10 needs updating now that social media is so dominant and influential.

Ineedtocleanmywoodenblinds · 12/12/2022 11:12

I deleted Twitter as my feed was just full of rightwing commentators who I didn't follow and spouting such vile rubbish. Of course, made worse post H&M on Netflix. It's a cesspit.
