My neighbours are scraping ice at 10.30PM

light hearted - ish 😆

It’s frozen solid here, road is an ice rink. Neighbours are 60’s and both retired, nice couple but probably retired too soon as both seem frequently bored!
For the past 45 mins they have both been outside in -3 scraping ice off the steps, the car and god knows what else.
I was a bit concerned they had somewhere they needed to get to so popped out to ask if they needed help with anything but no, they aren’t going anywhere!
I’ve since gone to bed and the loud scraping noises are driving me potty.
What on earth are they doing it for?!
Do they want to fall on the ice or get hypothermia? Or are they just trying new ways to drive me round the bend Hmm.
Aaaarghhh!!

We sometimes travel to southern Germany in winter. -20C isn't unusual overnight with a 'high' around -10C, and after a couple of weeks all the moisture has frozen from the air. If there's no moisture, there's no ice on the car windows. Well, the outside at least. They tend to ice up on the inside when you get in and breath out moist air.

We left my Mum's house one cold evening-no frost, but there was a slight mist on the windscreen, so my DH turned the washers on. Result, instant pebble-dash as the water hit the cold glass! It took ages to clear it off.

I put hot water bottles on the windscreen 10 minutes before we go out. Windscreen de iced and the kids have them for their knees for the school run.

It's not common in the UK, but a couple of times we've experienced ice-rain in Germany. The air temperature warms just enough for light rain, but the ground surfaces are solidly frozen. The rain drops freeze on contact with roads and pavements leaving small raindrop-sized bobbles of ice. Absolutely impossible to walk or drive on without spikes. When it happens the gritters have to reverse up even the most gradual slopes so that they can use the grit they're spreading to give them grip.

Someone on our street sloshes water over their windscreen and drives off happily. Then it freezes over
It runs straight across the street, no way of avoiding walking over it and there's no street lights. I've fallen once on it

I think if I were you, I'd advise checking with the council legal department, rather than whoever you phoned (my council have told me all sorts of stuff which turned out to be incorrect later).

I simply can't find any evidence that what you say is true, which is odd. Particularly considering it's advice that's likely to lead to injury.

Well, I live in a country where rain is a big deal when it finally decides to arrive so I don’t have to worry about snow, ice, etc., I only have to worry about my grass dying off!

midsomermurderess · 10/12/2022 11:09

Now you know what to ask for for Christmas: noise-cancelling headphones or ear buds.

HRTQueen · 10/12/2022 11:09

My nan would do this then put salt down

I guess wasn’t to icy the next day

Azandme · 10/12/2022 11:13

Where I lived in Germany we had snow and ice from October to April. It was also anywhere between -5 and -25.

The bylaws stated that everyone was responsible for keeping their driveways and the footpath along their boundary clear by 7am. We used to shovel in the morning, but the locals ALWAYS cleared snow and ice in the dark at night then salted, and I was confused why until I tried it.

MUCH more effective, is still clear in the morning, and stays clear all day.

It really is the best approach - I find having lived there, many British people really don't know how to manage cold weather.

Silly sods, it’ll all be back by morning.

Some arse has done this on our road. The trail of water left behind has refrozen as a hazardous band of ice across the pavement and it's been there all day

Pour some hot water over it .....

VanGoghsDog · 10/12/2022 11:46

Which will re freeze.

Oh no! I never thought of that!

Really though, I'm sorry you can't recognise a joke when you see one.

Sometimes these things don’t work on screen 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh dear. Did you miss the fact that the OP added "ish" to the end, thus implying it was not actually lighthearted at all?

Since when did "lighthearted-ish" mean "I'm really worked up and I haven't got a life beyond this issue"?

I didn't have to though, did I?

Are you suggesting that once I pointed out that it was a joke you still didn't get it and I now need to explain it to you?

THEDEACON · 11/12/2022 15:19
