We've had the dreaded 'Strep A in school' letter.

6 days left until end of term and mine's riddled with a cold.

Can't help but think swerving the last week of typical primary end-of-term nonsense of plays and fetes and assemblies is a better option than risking it.

Or AIBU?

If you expect the teachers to be in school, unless your child is actually ill, send your children to school.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/12/2022 21:49

Children are germy fuckers.

Stand them in a sterilised operating theatre and they’d probably catch something.

ADifferentKindofChristmas · 08/12/2022 21:52

We are in exactly the same position.

DS currently has a streaming cold and we have kept him off the past two days, then tonight we have had a letter saying that they have a strep A case.

As soon as his nose dries up he is going back into school.

DustyOwl · 08/12/2022 21:53

Sorry, I voted by accident! I can see it from both sides but I would probably let her go in and enjoy the Christmas celebrations (and I would enjoy a bit of time at home!) On the other hand I don’t know the situation in your area, it’s not too bad here at the moment. Not much help I’m afraid.

this stuff isn’t nonsense though is it. Kids enjoy it and it’s all important for social/emotional development.

I’m not unsympathetic- I have primary DC in a school with a Scarlett fever outbreak at the moment. … but if covid has taught us anything surely it is that there is a cost to cancelling everything. Sometimes that cost is a price worth paying but it is still a cost. In this case, I don’t think it would be proportionate to avoid everyone and everything but ultimately the decision is a very personal one.

Why? It’s the most fun week of the year for kids in the run up to Christmas surrounded by all the festivities and their friends.

StaunchMomma · 08/12/2022 22:01

It's a weird one, isn't it?.

Mine is ill, been off today as so bunged up and feeling a bit rough. Was planning on sending him in tomorrow but is it really fair on the other kids when he's all snotty anyway? Plus, if they're a bit under the weather they're more likely to pick up other things, surely?

They're doing nothing of any use anyway- days and days of watching Christmas films, drawing and singing carols. He's not one for enjoying it, either.

I'll keep him off tomorrow and see if we know more about classes affected and numbers by Monday, I think.

Depends on the child. Mine would genuinely prefer maths to watching a nativity.

I have relatives who work in education and believe me, closing down early for Christmas would be the last thing they'd want.

As a previous poster said it truly is the most exciting time of year in schools, especially for primary year ages and most (if not all) would be disappointed if things didn't go ahead e.g school assemblies/plays/dinners etc.

What I find sad is teachers being told they can't decorate their classrooms with fairy lights and trees because the school can't afford to pay for the electricity.

Logicalreasoning · 08/12/2022 22:28

Dd10 has a cold, I’ve kept an eye, she had scarlet fever back when she was 3, so far is fine in herself and at the tail end of the cold.. I’m keeping an eye... 4 kids were off Ill the beginning of the week. She’s in good spirits and missed last years festivities due to having a small cough, the school over reacted and we had to wait a week to get results back to say she didn’t have covid, despite taking lft 5 times
its up to you if you don’t want to attend but then it might be for nothing. Strep a has always been around, it’s only a big deal because the media are over reporting it. It happens year after year. It sucks, it really does, but you can’t live you life what if, staying in for so long is probably what caused the low immune systems in the first place.

I do absolutely agree with everything you've said. The press really aren't helping and it feels extra cruel to do that after everything we've been through the last few years.

It's just the timing that's annoying, I guess. We're so close to breaking up.

Aaaah but that's only 6 days before they break up and they need at least a fortnight of Christmas batshittery, apparently!

We got the email today too, that there was a confirmed case of Scarlett Fever, I was gutted as we have so much fun stuff planned this weekend....and I'm laid here listening to her coughing away in bed 😢 hopefully it amounts to nothing 🤞

All of my early days COVID anxiety came flooding back, I kind of wish they hadn't told me to be honest, it was on my radar anyway so it's just made me panic a bit! It feels like this early COVID days where it is everywhere and they're going into intrepid details about cases and deaths etc 😬

You know your kids best OP, and if they're not arsed about the last week of term chaos, then keep them home, do fund stuff with them and hopefully have a germ free Christmas

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 08/12/2022 22:57

Christmas 2020 I took my daughter out of school for the last week as Boris said we could have a window to visit family so we all as a family stayed home for a week to keep relatives safe

Luxurysleuth007 · 08/12/2022 23:01

I went to my nieces Nativity today, crammed in a packed hall with coughing and sneezing year 1 and 2s everywhere. 🫣🤦🏻‍♀️

Mammyloveswine · 08/12/2022 23:04

"End of term nonsense".., ok next year I won't take 30 kids into various venues singing carols, giving up my lunchtimes to practise...let's not have an early years nativity which takes weeks to rehearse, me sitting up practising makaton actions so I can teach them to go with each song, my Sunday is going to be spent baking cakes for the kids to decorate for the Christmas fayre, Ive also organised a Christmas carol service for the older children which is on an evening and so am giving up my own time again to lead that..

It Would make my life so much easier if I didn't do this because I still have to squeeze in the curriculum and god forbid I miss a phonics session..

However there would be uproar and moaning!!

Cant bloody win working in a school.

If your kids break up on Friday 16th they have over a week off before Christmas so even if they do pick up a cold or virus there is plenty of time for them to rest up and recover before the big day. Surely you can’t have anything that exciting planned on the 17th-23rd to make missing all the fun things school will have planned for the kids to do with their friends worth it.

voxnihili · 08/12/2022 23:27

@Mammyloveswine my DD (4) is loving the ‘end of term nonsense’ and comes home full of it every day so thank you.

We always have things planned for as soon as school breaks up, plus the other half has that week off and family will be arriving to stay over Xmas that week.

It's just an added ball ache really, is my point. It's more to worry about and I suppose that will feel even worse for the many kids who really love the school festivities this time of year.

We could have done without it after the last few Christmases, that's for sure!

My DD is absolutely loving it. Most people appreciate your efforts to try and make it a fun time to remember, a very small proportion are just miserable.

Off track, but when do your kids go back?

DDs school doesn't break up until the 21st!
