Bumping this for you.

Does she have any other symptoms?

StillDancingEvenOnTheRainyDays · 07/12/2022 23:08

Poor you and your little one
please be guided by 101/medical practitioners- this isn’t the place.

give Them a call back if you can
fingers crossed for you both

Sprintfinish · 07/12/2022 23:13

Did they mention ibuprofen? I use that along with paracetamol with a stubborn temperature. While concerning a temp in the 38s is manageable and shows the body is fighting infection. It's 30-40 that becomes more worrying, especially if paracetamol etc not bringing it down.

Last winter my 1yo had regular fevers and was often still low 38 upto an hour after paracetamol. It is worrying but GP was always reassuring if other signs OK not to be overly worried... No rash, still drinking etc

LokiCokey · 07/12/2022 23:14

My DC had a high temp like this last week and ibuprofen brought it down where calpol didn't. Do get medical advice too though

Sprintfinish · 07/12/2022 23:14

Meant 39-40

Notjusta · 07/12/2022 23:19

How old is the child OP? How are they ok in themself - still drinking, eating a little bit, easy to wake up, still able to raise a smile etc?

38.4 isn't crazy high.

What sort of thermometer are you using? Our forehead one has a tendency to read alarmingly higher

BungleandGeorge · 07/12/2022 23:23

1/2 hour isn’t really long enough for the calpol to be absorbed and start working.
have a look at the nhs guide for general advice www.nhs.uk/conditions/fever-in-children/

UmbilicusProfundus · 07/12/2022 23:27

A temperature isn’t really a guide to how unwell a child is. Mine regularly hit above 40 with just a standard cold.

you haven’t mentioned how old the child is. But in any case it is the degree of other symptoms that suggest whether she is unwell. Which I assume 111 would have screened for.

SeenAndNot · 07/12/2022 23:28

38 temperature isn’t particularly worrying from everything I’ve been told and experienced. What is far more important is how the child is otherwise.

rash that doesn’t fade when pressed, severe headaches, severe vomiting, cold hands/feet, listless/floppy, hard to rouse are the symptoms to panic over and warrant emergency attention.

sandpaper rash, strawberry tounge, fever over 40, convulsions etc all would send me to see a doctor quickly.

alsownm · 07/12/2022 23:29

Mine have had fevers that don't respond to calpol but do ibruprofen

CravingCamembert · 07/12/2022 23:31

My 9 month old had temp over 38 the other week before all strep stuff was in the papers. Took 24 hours using ibuprofen to bring it down to 37.

Normally ibuprofen works quickly but it was the third and final dose that finally worked.

Calpol is more for pain than temperatures.

Vivi0 · 07/12/2022 23:31

You need to be using Calpol and Ibuprofen. That combination should bring the temperature down.

Does she have any other symptoms?

Blotches on skin since Monday , tired sore throat and cough.
111 say the cough should mean it’s not strep A

She can’t take it as she’s a severe asthmatic! She’s not little she’s 11 but I can count on one hand the amount of times she’s had a temp
last time I remember she was about 2!

Thanks just looking for experiences to make sure I’m not being fobbed off
she’s asleep very tired sore throat and won’t eat which is very rare normally I’d let her sleep it off without too much worry but the news has got o to me

If you cool her too much and too quick it will cause the temp to rebound up. It’s pretty cold out, what temperature is the room?

I’m not sure but it’s cool I’d say
she’s 38.7 is it safe to be at that temp she’s never really gone above 37’s
she’s woken up and shouted at me as I woke her up which I’m guessing is a good sign

OP posts:
BungleandGeorge · 07/12/2022 23:51

can You take the temperature of the room with your thermometer?
there’s info in the nhs guide about what temp and other symptoms would be cause for concern

alexdgr8 · 07/12/2022 23:52

is she drinking normally and passing urine.
can you see her tongue and throat, using a torch.

UmbilicusProfundus · 07/12/2022 23:55

You are getting too fixated on the temperature. It’s really not that high and isn’t intrinsically dangerous. Close the window and keep an eye out for any more concerning symptoms that 111 would have advised you about.

Creameggs223 · 08/12/2022 00:12

If she's fine within herself I wouldnt worry to much, set alarm on your phone throughout night to give more calpol and see how she Is in the morning also check her throat for any white spots.

Whoopsywoo · 08/12/2022 00:14

Thansk guys no white spots
if I hadn’t checked her temp I wouldn’t be too worried as she tends to sleep when unwell but she is burning hot
left juice by her bed will set alarm for in a few hours
she can’t take ibuprofen due to her asthma just worried it’s so high I’m not sure if I should call back or minor
is it dangerous to have a temp or ok to fight through it?
