Fun food ideas to do with kids

Hi everyone. Firstly, I know that this isn't an AIBU question, but this is the board I'm used to and you generally get excellent replies. So I'll don my hard hat and go for it Grin

Part of my job - in a deprived school - is running a club for the youngsters (7 10 year olds in particular). I'm free to do what I want with them and last time we decorated and ate cakes. They loved it. Next week will be the last time I'm running the club, and they have asked to do a food based activity once again Grin
Points to consider:

  • I'll be paying for it myself
  • I don't mind that Grin
  • our time is limited. Like, half an hour tops.
  • it can't be too messy and I don't have a sink in the same room

Any ideas for food based games or activities that are cheap, not too messy or lengthy?!

Thanks.

Blow football with Maltesers might be a good one, but a bit germy!

Aww, thanks. Sounds great. However I'm thinking that another cake idea might be a bit samey ...

A 'name that food'?

Blindfold eat in turn and they have to guess what they're eating?

Build the biggest tower out of marshmallows and spaghetti?

Tigofigo · 07/12/2022 21:49

Make flatbreads? You can fry them for a few mins either side to cook?

Make christingle oranges?

Do a blindfold taste test - kids have to taste something and identify it - could have one thing for each taste such as sweet, sour, bitter, savoury / umami and also see which areas and the tongue the taste is strongest

Could do an intro session with weird and wonderful fruit and veggies they may not have seen or tastes before like star fruit, dragon fruit, chicory, artichoke, capers etc

The chocolate game? Big bar of choc and knife and fork in middle of circle of kids. They pass round a dice and throw it. Anyone who gets a six runs into the middle. They have to put on a hat, scarf and gloves before picking up the cutlery and cutting off a piece of chocolate. If anyone rolls a six before they have succeeded they must stop and the next kid starts putting on the hat etc.

It has potential to be a bit germy so would make the following rules: if you cut off a piece of chocolate you can eat but not using the knife or fork 😂 chocolate to be on a clean surface 😂

Making strawberry Santa hats, google it, DD did them at the club and it’s fun

notnowB · 07/12/2022 21:53

Thanks everyone! Super ideas Star
I particularly like the chocolate and taste test games, as they don't require cooking.

I once made sushi with a group of primary school kids. If you have or can be loaned a rice cooker, you will need some rice mats (relatively inexpensive to buy), sushi rice, tuna, cucumber and mayo for a filling, seaweed for wrapping (but not essential - you can also use sesame seeds if no allergies) and if you can - some sushi vinegar - but again, not really essential. I'm sure there are plenty of tutorials online if you haven't made it before, but it's really very easy.

Decorate some gingerbread?

Turn it upside down and it will look like a reindeer.

And they can decorate with sugar eyes, sweets, icing etc.

If you're thinking of pizza, use traditional English muffins for the base, split in half, top with passata type sauce and cheese, maybe some herbs, then grill.

Making a popcorn loop or spiral as a tree decoration.

Could you do premade cupcake decorating? Or icing digestive biscuits with sprinkles of various kinds? I used to do the latter with my younger siblings all the time and they still talk about it as adults Smile

AdaColeman · 08/12/2022 00:18

Cheese straws with ready made sheets of puff pastry and ready grated cheese.
