Y8 HPV vaccination

If you dc had this, did they have any side effects? My dd has hers on Friday but she has been under the weather with various bugs for 2 weeks and I am a bit apprehensive.

I take it this is a needed in arm, right, she is not keen on that and a bit worried, she'll cry when she gets it.

I can't remember but many years ago someone said to me that they support all childhood vaccines bar this one due to side effects. I am the opposite of an anti vaxer (!!!) and my dc have had all their scheduled vaccines as well as nasal flu ones and Covid.

Please can you share your experiences with the HPV vaccination?

I had this myself aged 15 (when they had just started it) and it was no different to any other vaccination. Presuming it's not changed in the last 15 years

ISeeTheLight · 07/12/2022 11:31

I actually had the HPV vaccine (grew up abroad) aged 18 ish and had zero side effects. It's such a life saving vaccine I am incredibly grateful I got it. My mum's sister had cervical cancer in her 20s. She survived but she was never able to have children as a result. It's a no brained to me.

sotired2 · 07/12/2022 11:31

My dd had no side affects at all and would rather a few days off color and protected in the long run.

Re crying when she gets it school are well used to dealing with the kids and the anxiety this causes.

Thank you! That's very encouraging to read.

My sons had theirs aged 10 and 12 (abroad) and they were absolutely fine.

Nsenene · 07/12/2022 11:49

I had it as a teenager (first year it was rolled out here). Absolutely no side effects that I can recall. Please encourage her to get it.

Talipesmum · 07/12/2022 11:50

No side effects for mine when they had it.

Flyonthewall01 · 07/12/2022 12:10

I had mine when they first came out like 12 years ago and I had no issue with them, just a sore arm. I worked my part time holiday job the same day with no issue. It’s such an important vaccine to have and is definitely worth feeling a bit rubbish for

spiderlight · 07/12/2022 12:12

Mine had it without any side effects at all.

ginnybag · 07/12/2022 12:19

DD had hers a few weeks ago. Mildly sore arm, no other side effects.

Thelnebriati · 07/12/2022 12:19

The NHS website has a list of potential side effects, the majority of them are very mild and no different from any other vaccine.

TheDishElopedwiththeSpoon · 07/12/2022 12:22

I had it years ago when it was newly released. It gave me a sore arm for a day or two. That’s it. I think it hurts much less than the tetanus vaccine personally.

Notanotherone6 · 07/12/2022 12:26

Two daughters have had it within the last couple of years. No side effects whatsoever for either of them.

Glittertwins · 07/12/2022 12:31

Slightly sore arms but otherwise no problems for either of them

ElsieC22 · 07/12/2022 13:03

I received mine during my school years and can’t remember any side effects other than a sore arm! What I will say though, is I’m currently under gynaecology investigations and it has been such a great reassurance that my chances of cervical cancer are so much lower due to the vaccine!

DancingRabbit · 07/12/2022 13:12

Years ago it was a new vaccine and there was understandable concerns, I think they've been either fixed or disproven (didn't really follow it). But I wouldn't worry how unless there was some kind of recent concern or development.

Can the gp do it instead if she's ill and worried?

pointythings · 07/12/2022 13:31

My two had theirs years ago (are now almost 22 and 20) and had nothing worse than a slightly sore arm.

edwinbear · 07/12/2022 13:31

DS had his last year, bit of a sore arm but he went off and competed at a cross country event the following day, alongside another 5 school friends who had also had it. No ill effects at all - none after the second dose either.

Kiwirose · 07/12/2022 13:35

My children had it with no issues whatsoever. Just like any other vaccine they have experienced.

It is probably a lot less bother and will cause a lot less heartache than the cancer it protects you from.

Scarlettpixie · 07/12/2022 13:38

My son had it with no side effects.

Dontknownow86 · 07/12/2022 13:40

I can share my experiences of having hpv, I had to have a colopscopy as I tested positive for it then lletz surgery where they removed part of my cervix with a cauterising loop. It was deeply unpleasant, as was the healing process. I wish they'd given the vaccine when I was at school.

Notanotherusername4321 · 07/12/2022 13:41

I can't remember but many years ago someone said to me that they support all childhood vaccines bar this one due to side effects

did they happen to mention the side effects? There have never been any as far as I know.

anyway, unless the side effect is death or serious disability with a higher incidence than cervical cancer, then it’s still going to be better to put up with the side effect than actually get cervical cancer…

Wishawisha · 07/12/2022 13:42

I can't remember but many years ago someone said to me that they support all childhood vaccines bar this one due to side effects. Isn’t this actually one of the most important vaccinations?
I wish I’d had it.

LT2 · 07/12/2022 13:53

I didn't have any side effects when I had the HPV jab 15+ years ago.
