Y8 HPV vaccination

If you dc had this, did they have any side effects? My dd has hers on Friday but she has been under the weather with various bugs for 2 weeks and I am a bit apprehensive.

I take it this is a needed in arm, right, she is not keen on that and a bit worried, she'll cry when she gets it.

I can't remember but many years ago someone said to me that they support all childhood vaccines bar this one due to side effects. I am the opposite of an anti vaxer (!!!) and my dc have had all their scheduled vaccines as well as nasal flu ones and Covid.

Please can you share your experiences with the HPV vaccination?

The power of suggestion is a very strong power.

If they are waiting with a number who make a huge fuss, start competitively 'fainting' when the genuinely anxious girl is seen to be getting attention or have somebody in the class whose Dad says that it's a conspiracy to sterilise the girls so they don't get pregnant when they immediately go out and start having sex now they've been told it's safe or somebody's Nan's told them they're all going to be ill and probably have the rest of the week and the maths test off to recuperate - then you get more complaining to being unwell afterwards.

But if they're waiting with calm peers and there aren't staff members fussing around them with PE crash mats, blankets and declaring that there were biscuits and the next lesson off for fainters (couldn't believe the fuss when that member of staff was working there, I think they just liked being seen as a mother hen type despite the way they treated other staff ), then very few complain of feeling rough afterwards.

My dd1 had the first dose last term and only had a sore arm for a few days. I think she is due the second dose next year.

I wish it had been available when I was at school!

FlissyPaps · 07/12/2022 22:02

I had it when I was 14 in 2008. We had to have 3 separate jabs over the course of 1 year.

Absolutely no issues or side affects. Don’t think any of my friends had any either.

If you have concerns ask to speak to the school nurse or the vaccination team.

I can give chapter & verse on dealing with an HPV tumour in the tongue. Not a pleasant experience and I wish I'd known about it when I was a teen onwards. No vax for it then though. Get it done

I don’t do the school vaccines but I do vaccinate a different demographic almost daily against HPV; none have reported any side effects other than an achy arm and the occasional lump that soon disappears.

I also had mine about 14 years ago and didn’t have a single side effect. The new Gardasil 9 vaccine protects against even more strains of HPV than the previous version, including some types that cause genital warts. It’s an absolute no brainer and I’m glad we’re vaccinating both girls and boys now as hopefully we will see cases of HPV-linked cancers decline over the next few decades.

My dd had hers yesterday, no side effects, unless mardy arse is a side effect 🤔

Clymene · 07/12/2022 22:18

No side effects here with both jabs. So goad this is available to our kids.

No, that's a side effect of being over 10 years old.

Mine had premature mardiness. Came out yelling her annoyance with the world and never really stopped.

GoingtotheWinchester · 07/12/2022 23:06

Both DC vaccinated - no issues.

Since Covid the disinformation around vaccines is becoming incredibly problematic. I hope schools start teaching genetics and vaccine science so fuckwits on social media can’t get away with spreading some of these ridiculous stories 🤬.

Genevieva · 07/12/2022 23:09

I don't think you need to worry about side effects, but if your daughter has a heavy cold I would delay as you are not meant to have a vaccination when your immune system is busy fighting off something else. School will just book her in the next time the nurses visit. Entirely up to you. If is is just a sniffle and she is on the mend then I would get it done on Friday.

OP

Tell your DD to try coughing when they are vaccinating her, it makes the jab less painful.

I'm not sure coughing 4 months after the jab is going to help ...

sashh · 13/04/2023 05:01

LOL sorry it popped up in 'active', I didn't realise it was a zombie. Still coughing does help with ANY jab.

sanityisamyth · 13/04/2023 05:02

And how does violently shaking when a nurse is trying to aim for a specific point make life easier? The chances of hitting a nerve or blood vessel becomes ridiculously high with the arm wobbling all over the place 🤷‍♀️

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 13/04/2023 05:15

My son had no side effects.
