To think that buttons should be on the same side for both male and female clothes.

I would imagine that very few ladies are dressed by maids these days so it makes no sense to have the buttons on the left to make it easier for the maid.
Having unisex buttons would make hand me down of school uniform shirts possible. Yes, I know it shouldn’t matter but it appears to if you have over sensitive children/grandchildren who do not want to be different.

'Having unisex buttons would make hand me down of school uniform shirts possible.'

Er, the shirts we buy are unisex anyway?

And what difference would it make anyway? Are there boys or girls out there refusing to wear shirts because of the side buttons are on???

What a weird, pointless post! I wear men's and women's clothing ... the only thing that really matters is if the size/shape fits...

Dahliasrule · 07/12/2022 13:04

DGS I autistic and to him it matters!

These quirks are interesting, why make everything sterile and bland?

lookersnoopy · 07/12/2022 13:09

No, I don't think we need to change the location of short buttons because you have an autistic grandson. I'm sorry but that's a far stretch for a reasonable adjustment.

walkinwardrobe · 07/12/2022 13:15

To be honest I think it's pretty low down on the priority list when taking about male/female issues. It's not even functional in the way pockets are.
I understand you when you say it causes your autistic grandchild difficulties, but there will also be people with button phobia who would most probably like to banish buttons from the face of the earth, but realise that it won't happen. It's unfortunate, but just one of those things.

Sprouttreesareamazing · 07/12/2022 13:17

My ds has asd. He absolutely cannot manage a girls shirt!.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 07/12/2022 13:19

Which side do you suggest they're on? And why?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/12/2022 13:20

Maybe we should have right handed and left handed shirts? I’m assuming what we call “men’s” is easier for right handed people?

pinkpotatoez · 07/12/2022 13:21

Bit of a non-issue though, isn't it?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/12/2022 13:21

This has actually made me realise why my left handed son struggles a bit with shirt buttons!

Kanaloa · 07/12/2022 13:21

I’ve passed down loads of my oldest son’s clothes through his sisters and brother 😳 is this not the done thing? I’ve never even noticed the school shirts button on the ‘wrong’ side, and DDs have never mentioned it I don’t think. I think I would have bought my girls the boy polo shirts/school shirts anyway as they’re less flimsy.

W0tnow · 07/12/2022 13:21

Is that why they are on a different side???

Singlebutmarried · 07/12/2022 13:22

Might be fine in primary school but as kids get older they change shape and the shirts are cut to suit the changing shapes.

If the handing down of school uniform is so important then just buy one type to start with and stick to it.

Onnabugeisha · 07/12/2022 13:22

I agree OP. It’s stupid and useless at this point to have such a difference.

MeJane · 07/12/2022 15:02

It would be a right pain in the arse for half of the population because you would have to relearn how to get dressed.

Would your grandson be OK if all the boys shirts were banned forevermore and he had to have buttons on the girls side?

Perhaps we could all drive in the wrong side of the road as well,as most of the world does.

QuillBill · 07/12/2022 15:10

Are you saying that your grandson is upset because he is wearing school shirts with the buttons on the women's side and he's conscious of it? Is there a secondhand uniform shop?

wonkylegs · 07/12/2022 15:11

My lefthanded DS finds it easier to do women's buttons up unfortunately he's now of a size (giant teenager) where he definitely has to get Men's shirts and still struggles with them.

Were there no male uniforms available, even second hand?

ReneBumsWombats · 07/12/2022 15:20

It would annoy me having to get used to buttons on the other side at this stage.

the80sweregreat · 07/12/2022 15:22

Yep , I agree it would make life much easier all round !
Maybe not for the men. But hey ho

gogohmm · 07/12/2022 15:26

Why does it matter which side? I wear men's shorts sometimes.

My DD's school blouses weren't unisex anyway, they had darts to accommodate female shape and revere collars

isthismylifenow · 07/12/2022 15:32

What side are the buttons on a unisex school shirt?

girlmom21 · 07/12/2022 15:34

Most teenage girls don't want school shirts, they want blouses.

What side are the buttons on a unisex school shirt?

They're just zips straight down the middle
