To think that buttons should be on the same side for both male and female clothes.

I would imagine that very few ladies are dressed by maids these days so it makes no sense to have the buttons on the left to make it easier for the maid.
Having unisex buttons would make hand me down of school uniform shirts possible. Yes, I know it shouldn’t matter but it appears to if you have over sensitive children/grandchildren who do not want to be different.

I imagine very few people notice or care very much about this.
If I ever wear a man's shirt (I sometimes do) I never even notice that the buttons are done differently.

LlynTegid · 07/12/2022 15:40

No doubt they would be on the 'male' side. No from me.

Ellie1015 · 07/12/2022 15:41

I agree they should have buttons on the same side. Clothes like shirts which are essentially unisex should be the same.

luxxlisbon · 07/12/2022 15:42

This is just such a non issues. No shirts shouldn’t be ‘standardised’, people can design what they want and people can buy what they like.

Most teenage girls don't want school shirts, they want blouses.

My senior school is shirts, and the unisex ones have buttons too.

I agree with a pp though regarding the cut. I had to buy some shirts for dd's friend, she had a 15-16 already, but late in the year I struggled to find that size in girls, so I bought some boys. They were absolutely huge, luckily it was only for a few weeks so she made do, but very different from the girl's one she had.

OneTC · 07/12/2022 15:48

I never knew that's why the buttons were the wrong way round. It's actually quite useful to me because I have to dress my mum

I used to have a short sleeve shirt that was very blokey looking but buttoned the wrong side, and it came in very useful for playing pool

isthismylifenow · 07/12/2022 15:50

The zip and button on trousers are different as well aren't they?

CornishGem1975 · 07/12/2022 15:52

My son had to wear one of my daughters school shirts recently and really struggled with the buttons!

ReadyForPumpkins · 07/12/2022 15:54

I have not noticed any difference. What side are buttons on girl's shirt supposed to be on?

OneTC · 07/12/2022 15:55

On women's shirt the right hand part forms the upper and left hand part underneath. On blokes shirts it's reversed

Itsabitnotcold · 07/12/2022 15:57

Yeah I'm autistic too and it stressed me tf out.

You got me there. I went to look at DH's shorts and they zip up the same side as my jeans and work trousers. There are some size and back zip trousers and skirts. But it's just how they are designed.

PuttingDownRoots · 07/12/2022 15:58

Are you suggesting that all clothes aimed at women should be redesigned, or all clothes aimed at men?

Unisex always seems to default to men....

ReadyForPumpkins · 07/12/2022 16:02

I really don't care what side the buttons or zips are on. They need to be the right shape, as other PP said.

Yep, I guarantee this is what they'd do if school shirts went unisex!

'Having unisex buttons would make hand me down of school uniform shirts possible.'

Er, the shirts we buy are unisex anyway?

And what difference would it make anyway? Are there boys or girls out there refusing to wear shirts because of the side buttons are on???

What a weird, pointless post! I wear men's and women's clothing ... the only thing that really matters is if the size/shape fits...

All the school shirts I've ever got have been from places like M&S and John Lewis or the school uniform shops. They have all been separated into boys and girls with, as far as I can tell, the only difference being the button placement. Genuine question... where do you get unisex school shirts from?

Oh and yep, I've got boys and girls, similar ages, similar size shirts and they often put on the wrong shirt accidentally and feel the need to change. Kids do get fussy about trivial stuff all the time.

LittleBrenda · 07/12/2022 16:17

Exactly. I don't understand why the OP wants half the population to have to have their buttons on the other side just so some children who have to wear hand me downs previously belonging to a sibling of the opposite sex don't get upset.

Surely the numbers don't add up. 50% of the population affected or a very small minority.

pinneddownbytabbies · 07/12/2022 16:18

I was always taught that the buttons were like that because historically the woman dressed herself, but helped her children to get dressed and did the buttons up on her husband's shirt.

I don't actually have all that many clothes with buttons. Only my jeans and a couple of other things so I really couldn't bring myself to care either way.

Are buttons like this elsewhere in the world, or just the UK?

DrMarciaFieldstone · 07/12/2022 16:34

No, I like some differences in life. Everything doesn’t need to
become the same.

I can’t do up buttons on the men’s side

DrMarciaFieldstone · 07/12/2022 16:35

Also my kids school shirts are fit for the bin by the end of the year - god knows what they do in them. No hand me down shirts here!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/12/2022 16:39

Maybe I should buy left handed Ds “girls’” shirts but I don’t think they’d fit because he’s a very boyish shape in his trunk! Ones aimed at girls always seem to be fitted for now apparent reason - he quite likes bright colours so we have tried this before only to come across the fitted shape.

This is me too! Although we got some handed down from a neighbour which were in amazing condition.

JoW1985 · 29/07/2023 08:15

You should try M&S they're a pretty straight cut. DS would get DD old ones as they only wore them occasionally.

Since HS we just get unisex ones from School Uniform Direct. They button on the left as well!
