Washing up bowl

HerculesMorseShrank · 07/12/2022 00:51

Ladies and gentlemen, can I ask what may be a controversial question - do you use a washing up bowl or do you wash your dishes in the sink itself?

I personally think washing up bowls are pointless and inexplicable, but am interested in the Mumsnet consensus and willing to be educated on what the reason for using one is.

YABU - Washing up bowls serve some useful purpose
YANBU - Just use the sink that was designed for washing dishes

I’m with OP washing up bowls waste of time add in the mystery why wife bought a square bowl for a round sink

RampantIvy · 07/12/2022 20:01

I think washing up bowls are unnecessary, germ and grime magnets that trap stagnant water under them whilst just sat there

Only by people that don't use them properly

.. Why not just use the sink which is easy to rinse and sanitise after use

Or why not use a washing up bowl which is also easy to clean and sanitise after use and saves water, and prevents my glasses from chipping if they slip.

Honestly, the hysteria on this thread about the use of washing up bowls is mind boggling. All I can say is that these people must know some people with dirty washing up habits.

My washing up bowl stays under the sink unless I am washing up. It is clean and gets cleaned after every use, which makes it as clean as the sink, and I get to use less water and have chip free drinking glasses.

I don't really understand how other people are baffled by them.
I can fill mine up with dirty dishes, and lift the whole lot out of the sink so I can use the tap/sink for something else.

Exactly!

I've been married for over 30 years
Always used a plastic bowl
Still here

AlwaysLatte · 07/12/2022 20:21

Honestly, this is typical Mumsnet. Washing up bowls are for people who want washing up bowls. Keep things simple!

Lovegossip · 07/12/2022 20:22

Never used a bowl, always sink

AlwaysLatte · 07/12/2022 20:26

Can someone explain how exactly a washing up bowl is used?
Of course. My single butlers sink is enormous, and very unforgiving when washing things like crystal glasses or other breakables. I fill it up with hot soapy water and do the washing up (just for the things that can't go in the dish washer) or use it for soaking something that might need a little bit of bleach.

What has being married got to do with washing-up bowls?! 😂

RampantIvy · 07/12/2022 20:39

You need a washing up bowl if you have a sink like this:

Washing up bowl
the80sweregreat · 07/12/2022 20:43

Was just making the point that ever since I got married I've had a washing up bowl !!
.. It is a ridiculous thing to write I admit !

Aquarius1234 · 07/12/2022 22:05

I don't think I could be friends with anyone that uses a bowl.
Red flag sorry not sorry..

I have a sink like that and I don’t need a washing up bowl. The sink works as a sink, as God and nature intended.

My relative has sink like that and doesn't use bowl.
For a start it would ruin the look.
She does have loads of stuff in the sink ready to be washed but ah well.

user1634987 · 07/12/2022 22:21

Only DH and I ever see our kitchen sink and neither of us care if the bowl is in there or not.

formulatingAresponse · 07/12/2022 22:22

Dishwasher

If I have to them straight into the sink

You have washing up bowls but they are all used to store cleaning products in

user1634987 · 07/12/2022 22:24

Only on MN do people get so worked up about the sight of a washing up bowl.

Ilovetocrochet · 07/12/2022 22:37

I’d just like to reassure those folks who are mortally offended by washing up bowls that mine is sat in my sink having it’s nightly soak in a bleach solution ready for some more hard work tomorrow. The cloth is also in the solution so in the morning after I throw the bleach water down the sink, I will have a lovely clean, sanitised bowl, sink, cloth and waste pipes!

Oh, and I popped the sink tidy in as well tonight as although no one has mentioned them, I’m sure that the anti bowl action group have a problem with them as well. So useful to store washing up liquid, a wire pad, old toothbrush for attacking my air fryer rings and a bottle brush. I guess my sink would make some of you quiver in your shoes at the thought of having useful cleaning objects on show!

My choice is to use a bowl and tip dregs down the sink or to fill the actual sink and then what... tip a half drunk cup of water/tea/juice into my washing up water...?
If only there were a way to tip half-drunk cups of things into the sink before filling it up Grin

Well yes, but that assumes that no-one in the household appears halfway through the washing up process with mugs/glasses that had been in their room for example.

123woop · 08/12/2022 10:01

I hate washing up bowls for washing up - I've never ever understood them! And have converted my mum to be bowl-less too 😂😂 I have a couple of washing up bowls but I use them when I'm bleaching the carpets (kids 🙄) or soaking dirty clothes (also kids 🙄)

RampantIvy · 08/12/2022 11:14

I understand why people might not use them, but the hatred of them is just weird and OTT. Everyone I know who uses them keeps them clean and out of sight when not in use, so I don't recognise the unhygienic comments on here.

wandawaves · 08/12/2022 11:29

I've never even heard of washing up bowls.
I'm not in the UK though.

Cam22 · 08/12/2022 11:35

Dishwasher. With a Belfast sink, it’s wise to have a washing up bowl, though, for obvious reasons.

Dacadactyl · 08/12/2022 11:39

Washing up bowls are totally ridiculous. They're always too small to wash stuff in and therefore are POINTLESS. I loathe them with an irrational vengeance.

mondaytosunday · 08/12/2022 11:46

Rinse in sink put in dishwasher. Do not get the purpose of a washing up bowl at all.
