Washing up bowl

HerculesMorseShrank · 07/12/2022 00:51

Ladies and gentlemen, can I ask what may be a controversial question - do you use a washing up bowl or do you wash your dishes in the sink itself?

I personally think washing up bowls are pointless and inexplicable, but am interested in the Mumsnet consensus and willing to be educated on what the reason for using one is.

YABU - Washing up bowls serve some useful purpose
YANBU - Just use the sink that was designed for washing dishes

Got a little side sink so don't use a washing up bowl. Previous house didn't have a side sink so used one. Simple as that

Exactly this. Now we don’t have the half sink a bowl is essential as you rinse and pour down the side of the bowl keeping the water in the bowl clean and hot.

Aquarius1234 · 07/12/2022 07:56

I may use more water, but I don't care. I refuse to have less than 100% sparkling clean items.

Aquarius1234 · 07/12/2022 07:57

Without any miniscule of anything on them.

Aquarius1234 · 07/12/2022 07:58

Can't stand when you go round someone's and plates or glasses aren't cleaned properly.
Discreetly goes to the tap and washes/ rinses...

Funkyblues101 · 07/12/2022 08:00

Washing up bowls are more economical for water and prevent breakages.
People washing up before putting in dishwasher are failing to realise how effective dishwashers are (and totally reversing their very low water usage).

Aquarius1234 · 07/12/2022 08:02

I've only every broken one thing in a few years.
I also wear gloves.

Maybe use a dishwasher

Brefugee · 07/12/2022 08:05

i use a dishwasher and i don't have a washing up bowl because i have a double (well, one and a half) sinks.
If you have a single sink, a washing up bowl is great if you're washing up and someone wants to add a cup that still has dregs of tea, or you have a pan that you've been soaking and you need to empty the water. Down the side of the bowl it goes.
or you can put the bowl on the side with clean water in it to rinse the soapy things from the sink.
Also a lot of plugs are little more than a slow leak.

Aquarius1234 · 07/12/2022 08:06

I used to work in catering and everyone used the green square non scratched thing to wash items before putting in large dishwasher.
Or rinsing lots if didn't have one.
No bowls and no filling up large sinks.
Just lots of elbow grease. And waiting a few minutes for pans / trays before scrubbing.

If you cannot get your dishes/glasses sparkling clean washing them in a bowl, you are doing it wrong.

Don't have one.

I give a good rinse and scrub in the sink before plopping it all in the dishwasher.

You shouldn't rinse things before putting them in the dishwasher, just scrape off the solids. Rinsing is at best pointless and at worst counter-productive.

The concept of a washing up bowl is so foreign to me- do dirty dishes go in there to be soaked? Then rinsed off later? Or is a fill the bowl with soapy water, dunk dish and it come out clean?

This sounds like the concept of washing up is foreign to you tbh. They work the same as washing up in the sink directly, you just have a little bowl for it.

I don't have one, but they're not complicated!

AugustSchumann · 07/12/2022 08:17

Mainly use the dishwasher and if I do wash up by hand it tends to be large items so I don't use a bowl.

We do have a washing up bowl though, and it is useful occasionally. It was particularly useful when our dishwasher broke as our sink is one of the large deep ones and it was much easier to just had less water in a bowl to wash up smaller items.

AugustSchumann · 07/12/2022 08:18

Oh and other things that are good about the bowl are the glasses felt safer to wash in it and if you don't have a drainer/double sink you can still pour liquids away when washing up.

latetothefisting · 07/12/2022 08:19

Use one or not, who cares, but I'm worried there are so many peoole posters who can't "understand" or even imagine how to use them - and these people are entitled to vote?

If the concept of a plastic bowl is too much for you to get your head around how do you manage to get dressed in the mornings?

Catering places use powerful taps to scrape rinse to avoid dirty dishes after dishwasher goes on.
No time for picking out items that haven't quite cleaned off crap. No food allowed in dishwasher to avoid constant repairs.

I use a bowl. It's smaller than the sink so uses less water. Also less chance of clanging mugs or glasses against the bottom and chipping/ cracking them.
Also super handy when someone is feeling ill. They always take the washing up bowl up to bed with them.

Oh yes, we have a washing-up bowl under the sink called the sicky bowl. Wouldn’t wash up in it though.

ferneytorro · 07/12/2022 08:22

No bowl here. The sink is ,well , bowl shaped so I just use that. It also reduces the capacity of the sink, width and depth so you can’t wash as much.

justasking111 · 07/12/2022 08:23

Anything not suitable for the dishwasher fragile. Sharp knives. Pots and pans. We had a septic tank system for decades so very much water aware. Dishwasher for sturdy china, glasses and cutlery

peppapig79 · 07/12/2022 08:36

Oh the comments over a washing up bowl. Haha
I was brought up with them so have always used them.I rinse plates (quickly) before they go in. Simples.

FOJN · 07/12/2022 08:41

I have a dishwasher but for things which need hand washing I use the sink. I give everything a quick rinse in hot water, scrub with a sponge and washing up liquid, rinse again in clean hot water and put on the drainer.

I stopped using a washing up bowl when I realised it was yet another thing which needed to be cleaned. Check the outside of the bowl and under the rim, if you don't scrub it regularly it will be covered in grease and dirt.

user7639865 · 07/12/2022 08:42

Some sinks are very large though and it would be almost like filling a bath to wash up

BorisJohnsonsHair · 07/12/2022 08:43

Why are so many people with dishwashers rinsing their stuff first? There's absolutely no need to do this! Just put your dirty stuff in the machine and it comes out clean.

Clogs the filter; I think. My solution to this is to clog the filter and cleaning it out once a month is DP’s job. May he never die.
