To just buy DD boys clothes?

Shannny · 06/12/2022 15:33

DD is 2.5
Whenever I take her shopping I ask her what clothes she wants and she always chooses boys clothes, boys pyjamas, boys hoodies and jumpers etc - I’ve been trying to encourage her with the girls stuff (not sure why, just naturally wanted to buy her girls clothes) but it’s becoming an “argument” so to speak everytime. At weekend I bought her a load of boys clothes she chose and we had so many comments from friends and family saying how lovely she looked and how much they suited her! So now I’m thinking I might as well just buy her boys clothes as default.

I know it’s not unreasonable as such but it still feels a bit odd to me

Has anyone else been through this?

lighthearted btw! I know there are bigger things to worry about etc etc

Also, men should be able to wear women's clothes without attracting any negative attention if that's what they prefer! I guess most 'feminine' men these days are either assumed to be gay or trans and I assume they also get a lot of hate for it (from, of course, OTHER men rather than women).

cherriegarcia · 06/12/2022 17:56

Boys and girls are literally the same shape at 2.5 years old. It makes no difference until they hit puberty. Daft to separate them in the first place really, they should just put them all together and call them "children's clothes".

seaweedhead · 06/12/2022 18:05

Dd lived in her older brother's hand me downs at that age and I often bought her stuff from the boy's section as that's what she felt comfortable in. Now at 11 she wears girls clothes but is very particular so no skirts, no pink, nothing too revealing.

Ericaequites · 06/12/2022 18:12

In the States, the difference between and XL boys’ and a XS ladies’ white turtleneck is eight dollars in a popular catalog. The boys’ turtleneck has taped shoulder seams, has a longer tail, is less body con, and thicker material

WeWereInParis · 06/12/2022 18:18

DD1 (3.5) has always had a mix of clothes. Partly because it's what she's chosen, and partly because I generally find it much easier to find nice thick joggers for winter in the boys' section.

This.

Having one of each, I tried to buy as much unisex clothing that I could!

bellinisurge · 06/12/2022 18:23

Why not. I had my brother's hand me downs as much as my sister's. My dd wore dinosaurs if she fancied. Dark colours if she fancied. And light ones "for girls" if she fancied.

@cherriegarcia
They are definitely not the same shape. Boys clothes are better made though.

RoseGoldEagle · 06/12/2022 18:27

I bought some white vests from M n S last winter for my then 5 and 3 year olds, they were the same brand but had a girl and boy version, so I selected ‘boy’ for DS and ‘girl’ for DD without really thinking about it. DS’s were lovely, thick and soft and warm with short but decent sleeves. DD’s were much thinner with a pretty pattern and frilly sleeves that had no purpose since they’re designed to be worn under clothes. Bought the boy version for DD from then on, so much more practical and kept her much warmer, and have found similar with trousers and other clothes.

Allsnotwell · 06/12/2022 18:29

Bling difference between boys and girls coats for warmth!

DD had a boys coat for winter as it was much better to keep her warm.

Back in the day people commented quite often on her ‘blue’ coat!

Thank god people are wanting to move away from lurid pink!

Purplemagnolias · 06/12/2022 18:29

Retailers will sell twice as much by separating the clothes as into boys and girls clothes!

lm4321 · 06/12/2022 18:39

My DD preferred 'boys clothes' or dinosaur t-shirt as she called them as she picked them just because she loved dinosaurs and had no idea they were 'boys clothes'. She liked dinosaur pants and socks too, all worked just as well for her as they would for a boy.

MajorCarolDanvers · 06/12/2022 18:46

Why does she need to wear girls clothes?

Glassslapper · 06/12/2022 19:09

She is 2, its weird you’re even asking her what she wants in the first place

When you have a child that would insist on being naked rather than wear something she didn’t like you don’t care about being weird and asking them what they like

dd went through an all pink phase around the age of 3 and then on to wearing more or less exclusively boys’ clothes because pink and frilly was stupid… They are just clothes.

VestaTilley · 06/12/2022 19:32

There are no boys clothes or girls clothes - there are just clothes. Let her pick her clothes, let her wear what she likes.

Girls are not dolls.

Tamuchly · 06/12/2022 19:49

My primary aged DD wears whatever she feels comfortable in and if it comes from the boys section then so be it. She has older brothers and definitely leans towards their preferred style of clothing. Her friends wear more girly things but she just wants to be comfortable. We have found that a lot of girls clothes don’t support movement (things that ride up, are cropped or cut unbelievably short) and, for the moment at least, she prefers not to be restricted.

musingsinmidlife · 06/12/2022 19:55

Most of these kids clothes are made in the same factories in foreign lands for very cheap - the boys and girls clothes are the same quality. If they were making boys clothes from better materials and higher quality workmanship, they would also cost considerably more. Different fits and patterns but the blue sweatpants with the dinosaur and the pink sweatpants with the princess are the same quality.

Purplemagnolias · 06/12/2022 19:56

When I was growing up lots of clothes were genuinely unisex.

It seems a recent trend to have 'boys' and 'girls' clothes for toddlers and small children.

KenAdams · 06/12/2022 20:03

My 10 year old often does this, mostly with shorts as the girls ones are teeny tiny and the boys are big and comfy.

It's weirder that you wouldn't

At 2 they barely control their own bowels, let alone have the ability to make decisions like this.

healthadvice123 · 06/12/2022 20:10

@Lcb123 maybe some people like them separated and cuts can be different and sizes efc, its still easy just to buy what you like.
Everyone makes a huge thing out of it when for years people have been buying what they or their dc liked

girlmom21 · 06/12/2022 20:10

@Glassslapper maybe your 2 year old was a bit slower on the uptake
