...to want people to say and spell my kid's name right when they've known her for ages?

OK, DD has an unusual name. About half the kids in her school have unusual names. Seems to me that unusual names are all the go these days and at least I can point to some family precedent on the subject (on DH's side: on mine, it would have been SO much worse!). So, what should I do when the school can generally spell it right, but none of the parents in the class do? I feel a heel, cos I know I wouldn't know about it if they hadn't been nice enough to invite her to parties, but I have tried to set them right before and they just aren't listening, I don't think. And don't even ask me about the ones who ask me her name and, when I've said it to them, turn to her and say it completely differently! It's only 5 letters long FGS, how hard can it be to get it right?

well you chose to give her an unusual name with patently an unusual spelling so unless you want to correct people each and every time you're just going to have to live with it until she turns old enough to change it to Sue or Jane to spite you

Is it a made up name?

I find they are hard to pronounce.

Dh's sister has a made up name. Took me about a year to learn how to spell it right.

ib · 01/02/2008 12:07

I don't know, but I have yet to meet ANYONE in the UK who can pronounce my name. And it's only four letters long....(and really, not THAT hard to pronounce). It's not even unusual, just Spanish....

mishymoo · 01/02/2008 12:09

As long as your family know how to spell it correctly, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

My son has a fairly 'normal' name however, we chose to spell it differently and have the same problem with the kids in his nursery. What annoys me, is the fact that my own father doesn't bother to spell it correctly!

when I moved to Australia I changed my name to its shortened version, spelt anyway I care not, so that people would not get my full name wrong in the way you describe. People would pronounce it incorrectly immediately after learning it. So I only give it out to people whom I consider linguistically continent.

Everhopeful · 01/02/2008 12:13

I'm with you mishymoo - though i think I have finally managed to get most of the family spelling it right. no, it's not made up, just Cornish and unfortunately it's Irish cousin is more familiar to people. I really really feel for ib (LOL), that must drive you nuts!

Oh well, Fiofio, I have the same trouble a lot of the time with my own name, so I guess it is unreasonable really (just had to blow off!)

I find that even though my dd has a pretty simple name it gets spelt in tons of different ways by different people, even her grandad spells it wrong and friends who have asked me in the past how to spell her name get it wrong. Just one of those things.

Witheringheights · 01/02/2008 12:15

My Dhhas a name with alternative spellings, he spells his in the more unusual way.
People we've known for years and yaesr still use the more common spelling. He doesn't bat an eyelid.

They're not tryin to annoy you. people are just busy with their own lives and sometines pay little attention to such things.

WorzselMummage · 01/02/2008 12:16

My names Sarah and people cant even spell that right so i wouldnt worry to much !

ghosty · 01/02/2008 12:16

I live in Australia too (hello Suzy )
I have a simple, well known name ... but the British way of pronouncing it is different to how the Aussies say it. I have given up correcting them. It doesn't bother me really.

Miaou · 01/02/2008 12:17

Dd1 has a very common name but on the 12 Christmas cards she received it was spelt 7 different ways! Dd2 has a more unusual name which people constantly pronounce and/or spell wrongly, even people who have known her a while. I really don't stress about it, it's not that easy to remember when you have a lot going on in your life! She politely corrects people if they say it wrong though, which I think is acceptable.

Everhopeful · 01/02/2008 12:17

Hi Chequers - it's Tegen. I don't think it's wacky, it's a genuine Cornish name and everyone says they like it when they hear it (even those who then say it differently - grr!). It means "precious thing" which of course she is

tries to work out alternative ways of pronouncing suzy's full name

can't do it

Everhopeful · 01/02/2008 12:19

Thanks for all your comments - I'm feeling very chilled about it now and can just Let Go. I have a life, honest.

MissusH · 01/02/2008 12:19

wouldn't worry about it too much - there's bound to be something bigger to sweat over at some point!

My dd is Anna and people still call her Hannah even after we have corrected them (they must think we are common & drop the Hs!!)

Tbh I can't be arsed to get worked up anymore...

ghosty · 01/02/2008 12:19

yeah, I've just been sitting her doing that too Twig ...

Ds1 has a not uncommon name, but there are 2 well known ways of spelling it. All his party invites written by his friends and/or parents have his name spelt the other way. Tbh, I'm not bothered at all, nor is he. We just return the rsvp slip with his name on it spelt correctly.

kayzr · 01/02/2008 12:29
